Thanks for that Marcus..... beginning to look like  some kind of standard or trend .
perhaps weaver got the formula wrong, perhaps sloppy QC, perhaps Parker Hale  shaved a wee bit off the rear of the receiver and other providers never got the memo.

Paul, on my 1200 C i only had 1 problem in 15 years or so with loose scope mounts, and that could not be attributed to the Shim as both front and rear mounts shook loose.
we had been rattling around on a snow machine for about 50 miles or so following which i missed an easy shot  at some Caribou on a small lake.....several times.

on the way home i noticed the scope rattling .

flushing the holes in the receiver and the threads on the screws followed by a moderate application of lock tite and it never happened again in spite of many more instances of some rigorous  treatment.

I went on to take another dozen head of big game following that misadventure so the shim, while not the perfect solution, really did not cause any problems.
The experience of others of course may vary .

Have contacted a local Gunsmith  regarding some shims

More as it comes

Hey Paul

Thanks for responding.

The scope and bases came mounted on the rifle.

The rings are exactly the same height as measured from the base of the ring
to the bottom of the scope tube with a Dial Caliper.

The Bases of course are different heights as required
to accommodate the different heights  of the receiver at mounting positions.

Bases are the Weaver 45 on the rear and 46 on the front, which matches the
info for Parker Hale on the Mount chart on Weaver's website.

Short of adding a shim under the front Mount  the only thing i can try is
Lapping the rings; i do have a kit.

while scope flexing due to  poor ring alignment might be a problem 16 to 20 MOA seems a bit much.  Then again perhaps not .

This situation pretty much duplicates my prior experience with a brand new PH 1200 C in 1976.
Hence the original post.

I considerd the Possibility of an Extreme Range shooter ; unlikely in Nova Scotia as
the only ranges beyond 300 yards i am aware of are Military,
though the rifle could have come from out West i suppose.

the bases and rings seem to exclude that possibility.

Again thanks for your input and i will post an update in the next few months.

Parker Hale/BSA Rifles / Parker Hale and Scopes

Hey Folks
Had my recently acquired PH 1100 deluxe in .308 Winchester out to the range today.
starting at 25 yards because  i wanted to know if i could hit the paper at 100 before wasting too many rounds....clean miss high.

I got it  for an excellent Price , too good to be true kind of price so  i was really looking to see what was wrong with it.  [ something had to be wrong ]

adjusted POA to the bottom of an 11 inch piece of paper one Hit  about 7 inches above that.  At 25 Yards

adjusted the scope to drop POI by  40  clicks to end of adjustment
end result 12 inches above POA at 100 yards

well that tells me what was wrong and why the low price

with the ammo i am using for the test  that 12 inches high translates to a 460 yard zero and he was another 40 clicks above that so either an extreme range shooter
or somebody got rid of it  because he could not get it on paper and had no idea how to get it right

easy enough to fix with a shim i suppose

Brain Fart  the PH 1200 C in .30-06 i had also needed a shim to get on paper

So My Question  is this Coincidence  or  is it common that  the available Base Blocks need to be shimmed when mounting a scope on Parker Hales ?

Curios ,  Mike

Like many  of the things we enjoy in life  the Remington Accelerator was a Product of Military Research and development.
During the Vietnam "Police Action " the US Military was looking for an armor piercing round that could be fired from standard .30 caliber weapons.
Remington developed same with a teflon coated projectile and the sabot.
like many Military projects when the product became available the Military was no longer interested.

I expect in a brain storming meeting somebody suggested a potential varmint round for .30 caliber sporting use'

Tested the Accelerator in .30-06 in the 90's
Hundred yard groups around 1 inch  which is about what my hunting hand loads achieved.

Have not seen accelerators available for a couple decades

i always wondered if the potential for Criminal misuse contributed to their demise

though most likely there was not enough interest from shooters

I like the .30-06 personally and hunted with one for decades.
During my 18 years in Canada's Northwest Territory i shot Dall Sheep, Woodland Caribou, Moose , and Wood Bison all with the 06 and hand loaded ammunition.

The Bison was shot in early January 91 on a Trip where myself and my companions put up to 200 Km on snow machines and tented for 3 nights at temperatures down to -43 C.

Will other calibres so  the job ? Certainly

the favorite in the north among the indigenous population ?  300 Savage for everything up to Moose

the Inuit  from the Canadian Arctic prefer the .223 Reminton and regular take Musk Ox Caribou and Polar Bear with it along with the staple of their Diet  Seals.

while many of us might Consider these to be insufficient....they get the job done

the best cartridge?

the one you are comfortable enough with ..... to shoot it well

Personally  i mostly hunt for Meat and find magnums tend to  waste more meat due to higher terminal velocities  the 06 wastes enough blood shot meat for me

the Sheep      150 grain Nosler Partition near maximum load of IMR 4350 Standard rifle primer

Moose and Caribou Most  180 Nosler Partition near max IMR 4350 Standard Rifle primer
1 moose and 1 caribou 165 Nosler partition powder ?? Standard rifle primer

Bison  200 Grain Nosler Partition 57 or 58  Grains Norma MRP   Magnum Rifle Primer
this was a special load since i knew i'd be hunting at -20 C or colder
it was worked up at the freezing point  0 C or 32 F

all but the 200 printed 1 inch hundred yard groups
the 200  3 to 4 inches  but with a vital area of about 2 feet or more  more than accurate enough

all loads zeroed at 250 yds for a point blank range near 300 yds

would i use an 06 again?  certainly

would i use anything else? yes   if i put in enough practice to be comfortable with how it performed

examples  7 X 57, 308 win, 300 savage , 7mm 08, 270 Win or for smaller Big Game a 243 or 25-06

BIG GAME / Re: How far would you shoot?
May 22, 2017, 04:29:33 AM
with everything in our control range is  pretty much unlimited

however the fact is  many things pertaining to  shooting game are well beyond our control

wind is often unpredictable  beyond our shooting position

the further the range  the greater the possibility of our game doing something to turn a kill shot into a miss or worse yet a crippling shot

it takes about 1/10 second  for an animal to go from dead still to moving

and 3/10 second or more for your bullet to travel 300 yards

most of the time we can get closer  and we owe it to the game to make the effort to ensure a clean quick kill

while long range shots are possible  we are not Military snipers
our objective is not to take out the enemy by wounding or killing

in a 10 MPH crosswind bullet drift can be 6 to 10 inches at 300 yards  which of course will translate to a hit outside the vital area if we do not hold exactly right to correct for it

in the 13 big game kills i made  only 2 shots were beyond 250 yards

fortunately every head of Big Game i shot at was  a kill
i am most proud of the fact i never had a wounded head of game escape to suffer

we should all be so lucky
