Where 'bouts Brasco? I used live about 60 miles south of Chinook, in the Bears Paw mountains, on Cow Creek. It was about 50 miles to the Missouri river from the ranch and boy where there some big deer around there. I was never fortunate or smart enough to get a good shot at one though. Also did some hunting south of Ft Peck. An acquaintance had a ranch down there where we chased mulies, whitetails and pheasants.

Good luck!!

We are going to stay in forsythe, and hunt around hysham.  There is a blockmanagement ranch in hysham that my buddy has hunted many times, and has always done well.    Hysham is between billings and miles city.

Used to live in Miles City. If one has not experienced the Bucking Horse Sale it needs to be on your list of things to do. If they still have it that is.

Don't remember if Hysham is North or South of I90. Been through Forsythe many times.

We'll need to see pictures when you get back!!!!!!!!!

Well the first day after driving we went to the ranch to find out that it was booked except one evening and a full day.  So we had a few days that we had to hunt somewhere else.  Not knowing the area we asked a bartender if he knew any places to hunt.  He made a phone call and found a place for us to go.  We followed the directions as best we could, and thought that we were on the right property, little did we know.  The first morning, as we got to the ranch we spotted a nice 4 point with a doe, so i got out of the truck and made the shot.

We went over to the buck, took a couple of pics, and dressed him out.  Next thing i know the land owner came flying down the road, and ripped my head off.  Looks like we made a wrong turn.  I tried to explain to the guy what the situation was, not knowing the area, following the directions that i was given, and that i was very sorry.  He didnt want to hear any of it and basically called me a liar.  I understand that it was totally my fault, and that it was my responsibility to know where i was hunting.  So he called the sherriff and the game warden.  In the end, they took the buck and gave me almost 300 bucks worth of fines, but i was able to keep my tag:smiley:

This is a pic of the buck that was taken

On the full day that we had at the ranch, we hunted hard all day and finally got into some deer.  Knowing that we didnt have time to be picky, i decided that i was going to take any buck i could get.  Chased a buck for a while and finally got a 400 yard shot.  This is the 3 point that i came home with

After packing out my buck, we were headed to a different spot on the ranch to find a buck for my buddy.  On our way there i spotted a buck 150 yards off the road.  He jumped out and took the shot.  The buck ran over the hill, i thought that he had missed.  So i ran up the hill to see if the buck was still in sight, and he was laying dead about 50 yards from me on the other side.  We had no idea how big he was.  Ended up with a monster, 26 inch spread.

Ended up being a pretty good trip, but expensive.  We'll be better prepared next year.

Mighty white of 'em. I wonder where those $300 actually went.

Glad to see things 'worked out'.

OUCH! You're lucky it wasn't Colorado, they will flat out HANG you if you're on private property without permission. It cost you some money but you got a nice animal anyway. Good job.
Ask not what your government can do for you. Ask how your government can go away and get out of your life.

Ya, for around here i actually got off pretty easy.

I would say you were lucky. In Colorado they would have confiscated the buck and your rifle taken you rifle and escorted you to the judge ....Ouch! I always take topo maps and google Earth maps when hunting a new area. Regards, Rick.
Talk to yourself. There are times you need expert advice.

poaching, trespassing     ...     yeah, you got off real easy, brasco.  hard to believe only fines were issued with the fwp's involved.  lucky on your part, i suppose.  i don't think those up here in the center of the state would have been near as forgiving.

Brasco20

Here the normal practice is  loss of privledges, fines, guns taken, and a court date.  The warden must have been a bit sympathetic for my pure stupidity.  The warden and the sheriff were pretty nice guys.  While waiting for the warden, i saw the sheriff coming down the road and my heart stopped. I thought i was going to the slammer.  Never been to jail and would like to keep it that way.   Also, i figured i would get a court date, and i live 5 hours from there.  Wasnt looking forward to driving back and forth.
When he told me that i was only getting fines, i was blown away.  Your right klallen,  got off extremely easy!
