THE WELCOME WAGON! / Re: Howdy
March 18, 2009, 09:31:07 AM
It is a neat site, I really enjoy it.  I have learned some things and some of the discussions makes one reflect on thoughts.  I just finished a rifle for my young nephew to shoot coyote and deer.  It is a 6.5X222 rem mag built on a mini mauser style (Dakota) action.  It has a douglas barrel and synthetic stock topped with a simons 44 scope.  It is a tack driver and pushes a 120 grain bullet at about 2300 fps.  it is death on coyotes and should be the same for deer.
I love the speer 120 grain bullet.  I use it in my 6.5X55 and have yet to have anything walk more than a step most fall in thier tracks.
The rifle is small and fits the nephew's small frame perfectly and is a pleasure to shoot.

Keep in touch we can share ideas and thoughts and swap a few hunting/shooting tales.

take care

I forgot to add that I do have a 25-20 in a winchester 92.  I have never shot deer with it but the rifle has accounted for a lot of rabbits, squirel, coyotes, and a ground hog or two.  I like the old model 92.  It is short, handy, accurate, and fun to shoot.  Reloading ammo keeps the cost down.  I don't know if I would ever use the rifle to shoot deer but am sure it would do the job just fine if you put the bullet where it needs to be.

I've got an old model 92 winchester in 357 mag with a 158 grain speer flat point bullet on top of win 296 powder I have killed deer, coyotes, and a ton of hedge apples.  It is a great deer rifle but I like the model 92 winchester in 45 long colt better.  With a 300 grain speer bullet it has killed deer, wild hogs, and a coyote or two.  I have also killed deer with an AR-15 and like I said, I have killed 1000 lb steers with a 22 long rifle rim fire.  It's not neccessarily the size fo the round but where you put the bullet.
I am just saying that if I had to have one gun for everything and it was a rifle that bigger, it would seem to me, would be better as long as you could place the bullets where you need to.

HUNTING WITH DOGS / Re: Weird Stuff

I agree with all of  you.  I don't understand why the game warden didn't follow up.  Not only can a wounded cat be dangerous but we owe it to the animal to keep it from suffering.  It might have been a different story if someone had stumbled on this wounded and hungry cat.

AUSTRALIAN OUTDOORS / Re: check it out
February 28, 2009, 06:40:22 AM
Right on I wish our politicians here in the U.S. would stand up like this.  The Left in this country are destroying everything that we have worked for and stood for in the past 233 years.
Today there was a news story here about how american guns are arming drug cartel and insurgents in Mexico.  The call from our political left is once again to take away the firearms of american citizens.
There is a movement to change the pledge of allegiance because it refers to god.  Several Schools don't even allow children to say the pledge of allegiance because of that.
There are states that have had to actually change thier state flags because it offended some people.
It has come down to the fact that the wants and desires of the few outwiegh the rights of all.
Our left wants gun control, no more god and country or freedom.  It is pathetic but we struggle on.

Good for Australia.  Stand strong guys

RELOADING / Re: Modern Smokeless 577/450 loads
February 27, 2009, 05:01:35 AM
I originally found this page looking for smokeless loads for 577-450.  I am working on a martini enfield in that chamber.  I have a variety of rifles but always like the historical ones and the martini's are definately historical.  My great grandfather carried one in Africa
Of course I love to shoot
I have to go now but will be back later and hopefully talk to you all later

In my opinion the 223 is nothiing  more than a small game/varmit round.  Although we use a 22 rimfire to butcher beef here (head shots from 12 to 24 inches) you don't find that kind of opportunity much in the real world.

The army picked the 5.56 mm for the reason of being able to carry lots of ammo and a small light rifle.  Good thing you have the extra ammo because it usually took more than one round to put the bad guy down even with good hits.  I knew many G.I.'s that rued the day they had to turn in thier M-14's with the 7.62 rounds for the matel toy and the pipsqueek 5.56

If a rifle is what you have to pick than I agree with the 308 win or the 30-06 but for all around the good old 12 gauge shotgun is hard to beat.  Shot shells mean small game and slugs and buckshot for everything else.

The idea of the combo guns is great also.  The only ones I have seen here are 12 or 20 gauges over 22 rimfire or 30-30 win.

THE WELCOME WAGON! / Re: Howdy

gun poor means I would rather buy another rifle, shotgun, pistol instead of things like food, cable, etc.

I drive an old jeep, live in a house with no cable tv but has a room dedicated to reloading, a room for my workshop and  a room for my guns.  I  hunt, fish, and work pretty much in that order.  I own two walker coon hounds, two beagles, one english setter, and a black lab.  I guess I am dog poor too but they are sure nice when hunting seasons roll around.

I seems I have found the right place to meet and talk with like minded people.

I am glad to meet you all.  I look forward to some long discussions

I found this site while searching for loading information on the 577-450 martini.  Searching through the site really impressed me.

I am an old Missouri country boy.  I caught my first fish at 5 and shot my first rifle at 8.

I work in law enforcement and am a firearms trainer.  I gunsmith on the side.  I am gun poor but always looking for another.   I love to hunt, love to shoot, and am a history buff.

I am glad to be on here with all of you and am looking for education, communication and just plain old fun.

Getting ready to go coyote hunting now so will see you all later.
