RELOADING / Re: Reloading Accidents...
March 13, 2009, 01:39:34 AM
I've had a couple of primers go in sideways.  I had one primer that was just plain loose. (Can't explain it.  New brass.  None of the rest were loose.)  I loaded one dud.  I'm convinced I contaminated the primer with dirty fingers and when I had a nice doe standing about 30 yards from me, click---Twice.  (I was using an Ishapore and recocked without excessive noise.)  They heard the small clicks and eventually ran off.     Next round was fine.  I short charged a round once, but figured it out right away and pulled the bullet and started over.  Nothing more serious.  I got mixed up on which powder I had poured, so I threw it away (it wasn't that much) and started over with what I knew I wanted.  My most significant incident wasn't strictly speaking an accident, but a procedural problem.  I was doing the initial forming from 35 Whelan brass to 338-06 JDJ.  Those JDJ rounds have a very sharp shoulder.  I scrunched a bunch of rounds before I figured I had to get a start on the mouth before I tried to jam it up in that sharp cone.  That wasn't dangerous, but it was somewhat costly. :o

RELOADING / Re: Some .375 Wildcats
March 11, 2009, 02:46:44 AM
That's what I kind of figured.  I would love to put together something in that category for a short to medium short brush gun for a bolt gun.  I guess it's just not practical.  An option would be to use the WSM case and load at low pressures with heavy cast and/or pistol bullets.  It's just dreaming at this point until I get some other projects done, anyway.  Paul, would it be possible to show that picture of the 375-08 so I can see it?  Remember my limitations re: picture attachments.  My server won't open the pictures above.

I just ran across this thread while researching the possibilities for the 375-08. I'm a big fan of the 358 Win, and I'm not much of a shot at distance, so I would love a solid thumping caliber like this. Has anyone successfully pushed the 308 any larger than 375?

The good news is that Remington is making new ones, but, sadly, not in featherweights.  Pedersoli makes one in 357 Mag, which is the right size, but I would be tempted to just bore it out to 357 Maximum and leave it alone, if I could find someone in the US who actually carries it. (for about 1000 bucks)

I mentioned rolling block initially because that's my favorite, but I would be amendable to almost any single shot action.  Incidently, I have a Handi-rifle with 5 different barrels and I haven't gotten any of them to shoot the way I think they should shoot.  I'm still spraying 280 remington bullets around 8-10 inches at 100 yards.  That's just not acceptable.  I'm about ready to give up on it.  :stars:

Just out of curiosity, if one wanted to build one of these on, say, a rolling block action, where could one be found (a single shot action) without destroying a collector piece (and paying a high price, to boot)?  I have found one rolling block action that would be a possibility, and it is still $400 (on the internet).  That one has no stock and has a 16 ga barrel.

THE CAMPFIRE / Re: Breakdown on manners

I must say that this is also one of the things I appreciate about THL.  I also have a long way to go in the cleaning up my language department.  It's not easy after 17 years in the Navy (if you want to hear the language, you'll hear it there).   Foul language doesn't make one tough, or hard.  It just makes one coarse.

I agree, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone tries.

I have heard rumors about having the military swear oaths, not to the constitution, but to the presidency.  Seems we are, indeed, heading down dangerous paths.

This post reminds me of the old adage. The best place to shoot a moose is right next to the truck. Had the same kind of situation up around Chicago. Lake county was overrun with deer. They were eating everything in sight, getting hit on the road all the time, etc. Yet, no one would allow hunters to take them, even with a bow. They all wanted the deer numbers lowered, but not "their" deer. ptooey

Kombi, I agree.  Well done.  If that "cooler" load is running in the neighborhood of 2900 fps, I would think you would be well satisfied.

Nice going, Rick.

P D, the experts have spoken and I have to agree.  That's a great find, the 300 is a fine chambering, if it doesn't take deer, it won't be the rifle's fault.  ;)   I think if you don't have to make any changes to that rifle, a peep sight would be just right.

Quote from: Hunterbug;90011That's pretty cool.

Ditto.  It was wire wrapped to strengthen it for launching grenades.

Kombi, I don't know if I have much for you.  I have heard stories of poor quality control from Ruger in the past.  I don't have a lot of experience with them.  I've only laid hands/eyes on a few, but the ones I have come in contact with have no quality control issues.  Somewhere around 20 years ago I had a license to sell guns.  I bought one and sold it to a firend of mine.  It is one of the few guns from that long ago that he still has.  That one was a Mk 77 in 270 Win.  The pistols have a reputation of durability and quality, as far as I know.  I just bought a single action Blackhawk in 357 and I think it's wonderful.  That same friend picked up a Super Blackhawk in 44 even before I sold him the rifle and he never had any complaints.  I think he sold it mostly because he can't handle the recoil anymore.  Also had some experience with the security six (double action in 357) and I think it was the P9 (9mm autoloader).    Again, everything I saw was fine, but someone else might have had a different experience.
