RELOADING / case weights
September 28, 2021, 08:40:04 AM
After reloading about 50 rounds  of 7mm rem, I decided to weight the finished products.  I found a weight variance from 450.4 to 456.3 grns. The powder measures were all within .1 grn .   I can only guess that there are minor weight variances in the cases.  I used the same primers for all.  All bullets ( Hornady 162 SST ) measured 162.0 to 162.8 grns.  I wasn`t expecting  the finished products to be that far off.  Only variances had to be case weights.  :huh2:

Winchester mod 70 ,  one MOA at 200 yards  :COOLdude:

FIREARMS & OPTICS / selling off collection
August 05, 2021, 08:32:05 AM
I`m about ready to start selling off my collection and was wondering what experiences you all have had doing so.  Options are auction, consignment and private sales.   Auctions usually take 20% of selling price, consignments seem too risky dealing with shop owners  and private sales and the related `advertising` can be a pain......especially trying to arrange backround checks with FFL `agents`.

What would you do if you had  a number  of guns from hunting to collectables ??

  No ARs or pistols.........

 Thanx, JaDub

For those who post on FaceBook and those who send me facebook contacts,

this is  to let you know that I do not participate on FaceBook.

In my opinion it`s  beginning to get ugly and I have no desire to be a part of it.

 Just say`n.

RELOADING / Curry Bullets
February 09, 2019, 02:12:52 PM
I have two boxes of .270cal.  .227 dia 130 gr Spitzer `soft point ` bullets of  100 ea.  The name on the outside of the box is Curry Bullets by Curry bullet Co. ... Los Angeles, Ca.

They came in a large box of ammo that  I bought at auction.  I`m looking for information about these but am coming up short.  Anyone know of them  ??  Any help would be appreciated.  I`d take $15 / box if  interested.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Black powder recomendations
December 01, 2018, 09:05:46 AM
I`ve decided to try black powder for elk this year.
 I have two choices :

Thompson Center .50 cal Hawken  with a 28" barrel

                                        or

Thompson Center .54 cal  Renagade with a 26 " barrel
I have 348 gr. Powerbelt hollow point bullets for this option.

Also...…  I`m figuring about 100 grs. of FF for either.

I`m also assuming that my max range will be about 100 yards...…….  ?

Any recommendations are very much appreciated.

BIG GAME / Colorado antelope
October 06, 2018, 07:07:07 PM
Had a great time with Hunterbug and Crack a Lope on the plains of NE Colorado.   Karl and I had tags and Hunterbug was our designated Sherpa/ guide. We both tagged out by 10:30 opening day and settled back for much needed r&r.  Great place to hunt with many opportunities for spot and stalk. Great finish to the day was Pat's killer liver and onions. AWESOME!!  Had a fun time but it was all over too soon. We're now sitting back enjoying a good shot of spirits looking forward to a great nite's sleep.

RELOADING / Berger bullets
September 15, 2018, 09:42:30 AM
Don`t remember If this has been hashed over before so I thought I`d throw it out there .........    Since most of my shots seem to be pass thru at less than 400 yards,  I was wondering if I need to dump a little more energy  into  the target.  That said, I havn`t lost an animal yet nor have I lost much if any meat.  My rounds of choice in a 7mm rem mag for antelope  and elk ( great long range trajectory ) is either a Hornady SST or Speer SBT 150  with 57 grns of 4350.  I also shoot  my .308 for deer with 150grn  Hornady SSTs with 46gns 4064.

The name Berger keeps popping up.  They claim great fragmentation without pass thru.  Is this a good thing or would this cause too much meat destruction ?

Marketing is a wonderful thing.  :anxious:

  All opinions are welcome.

ELK HUNTING / 2018 draw
June 12, 2018, 04:42:10 PM
Karl ( jackalope ) and I  both drew three tags each, antelope, deer and elk.  Can`t believe I got this lucky again.  Last year was a fantasy filling all three tags...........  this year  (18) is just going to be a dream.  How about you Hunterbug......  did you draw as well ?

BIG GAME / antelope score
October 09, 2017, 01:11:37 PM
Just came back from our antelope hunt last nite. Jackalope, Hunterbug and I had a successful hunt filling both tags. Best part about it was we beat the nasty rain, wind and snow storm by minutes , literally. Hunterbug was there with us even tho he didn`t have a tag......... he was there for moral support and a bit of " spirit consumption ".

Karl bagged his on opening day and I followed on Sunday. Saturday the place was crawling with hunters but Sunday it was like a ghost town........ which included the antelope. After many stalks I managed to close within 180 yards and put one down.........DRT. Love that 7m rem mag, yes I do.

I will also say that the Harris bipod I installed worked like a champ. After the antelope added about 50 yards to where she was when she caught sight of me, she made the fatal mistake of stopping and turning around to have a look at me.

Big mistake. She was pretty much facing me with a tiny quartering angle, I drilled her thru the front of the right shoulder and out just in front of the left  rear quarter. It was a very tough narrow angle shot but the bipod, with me in a prone position , made it possible.

For a shaky old man like me the bipod is worth it`s weight in gold. I bought the one that goes from 12 inches up to about 20 inches. Spendy, but works great. I highly recommend it.

THE CAMPFIRE / bi pods........ what brand ?
September 19, 2017, 02:02:32 PM
Finally decided to add a set of bipods to the 7mm. What do you recommend ??

Harris seems to be the leader.......... S 25-C looks like a winner to me.
