FIREARMS & OPTICS / Re: .338 Federal - AKA .338-08

I will watch this post with interest.  I have always been interested in the whole line of cartridges based on that "useless" 308 win case.  I am a great fan of my 358 win, and can only imagine that a 338-08 would be a great thing.

All good suggestions.  Lee precision makes sizing dies that only size the neck.  Some people don't like Lee Precision, so I'll leave you to your own on this, but they do have the dies.  They size somewhat differently and it is said there is less wear and tear on the cases.  Measuring and trimming is still necessary.  I will add that complete case sizing is especially important for semi-auto rifles, like Winchester 100's, for example.  Some rifles just don't have the strong camming action and it can be tough getting loosely saized cases in a tight chamber.

Quote from: TackyDriver;93749As long as we're on the subject of going "all american", I'll risk ticking off all the Colt SAA fans by saying that I believe the shotgun was atually the gun that "Won the West." You could get pot meat for the kitchen, defend a Wells Fargo Stage Coach, hold off uninvited visitors and the sheriff could discourage all kind of unpleasantness with a "Street Howitzer" in the dusty streets of a Western American Town.quote]

Amen to that.  The only thing a shotgun didn't have was range.

Brian, welcome.  I haven't used the 7 mag, but you find anyh number of shooters here who have nothing but good to say about it.  Personally, in the 7mm category, my favorite is the 280 Rem, but you have to load it pretty risky just to try and nudge the 7 mag.  It should do well for you.  If you decide to bring it a little east to Mo, there're a number of members here who would enjoy hearing from you.

I started out with an Iver Johnson single shot and decided I had to have the Mossberg.  I'm still not used to the pump :undecided: , but have to say I like it just fine for its versatility.  I have 3 barrels for mine.  The original had the forcing cone cut out to about 1/2" for use with steel shot for waterfowl.  The second is short but with an extra full choke for turkey.  The third is rifled and has an integral scope mount base for deer.  I think I have things pretty well covered.  Now, if I can just get used to having a follow-up shot.

Great post.  I would have to say all 3 rifles shot better than I can with iron sights.

I'm going to be reading this intently, as well.  I had a conversation with my 13 year old granddaughter recently that showed me she has been introduced to the "truths" being offered today.  Truths such as "If God is in favor of peace, why did He have so many wars in the Bible?"  "Man wasn't designed to eat meat."  ........ and so on.   As for imitations, I agree that careful study into the truths of the Bible rather than "truths" in the Bible will point out imitators.  Anyone can find truths in the Bible to support their own belief.  It takes an understanding of the message of the Bible to understand what is important.

RELOADING / Re: Reloadable .22 Long Rifle

Now, You've gone and got me back. Just the other day I was drooling over a Single Six in 32 H&R Mag. Seems to me I have seen several molds for lead bullets, but the Mag probably pushes the limits on velocity. I still have what's left of a 10 lb bag of 00. Been using it for years. (I mean, how fast can you use them up in a flint?)

This has been a thought in the back of my tiny little mind for a while and I have (with great effort) given it some thought.  I think one of the premises I placed on my own ideas was that I did NOT want to over power the rifle.  In other words, I could actually shoot it in a 22 LR action.  That being the case, any current 22 CF is too much.  (I am not disparaging the 22 hornet, only letting my limits.)  What I came up with was the .25 auto, .32 auto, .32 S&W (or colt, short, etc), or my favorite, the 22 flea (.32 acp necked to .222) and loaded with cast lead.  I actually have an old Springfield 22 SS action that needs rebuilt and I considered putting a 25 caliber barrel on it and chambering in 25 auto.  The only thing stopping me is that I think I would rather rebarrel it in 17 HM2.

Anyway, to summarize:
     .25 Auto
     .32 Auto
.32 S&W      (In the .32's, I would be very tempted to use 00 buck, like my 32 flint)

WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND? / Re: License to reload?

You may have to build a bunkhouse if a bunch move in.

That would pretty much make wildcatting illegal, unless all wildcatters get licensed, and I bet they'll make that hard to do.

Having one myself, I would have to say that I recognize it.     The different shape of the magazine identifies it.  Mine does not have a scout scope, but a red dot mounted on a receiver mount, which blocks removal of the bolt, unfortunately.  :o   Mine doesn't have the extra paint.  It's strictly black.  If anyone knows where to get a 5 shot magazine for it, I would love to hear about it as the authorities here frown on hunting with a 10 shot magazine.:o

That is some good shooting.  I have not forgotten and will bring that beasty pistol up one of these days.  Found out that the problem with separated cases (total 2) was from not getting a clean lock-up on closing it.  Get it locked good and it'll shoot better than I can.

My first thought is how big are the pigs.  There are pigs, and PIGS.  Loadings for the 7.62x39 are adequate for small deer.  That said, a similar loading would be fine for a fairly good sized pig.  However, converting the M-N to 7.62x39 is a major undertaking and, frankly, not productive.  I'ld follow Kombi's advice and develop a more comfortable load.  He's right about the mil-surp bullets.  I would be inclined to try and cast some heavy lead bullets.  But, that's just me.

I want to add my thanks for a job well done and congratulations on your new status.  I've been off active duty since 2001 and it still seems like only yesterday.  Military time seems to be the times you hate while you're there, but remember with a sort of fondness for the sense of teamwork.
