HUNTER'S GEAR REVIEW / Installation of walk in tub
April 03, 2020, 03:44:01 PM
Lol I bought a horrendously priced walk in tub. Basically a bathing hot tub jets, air bubbler, heater, and some kind of colored lights. Thinking I would be great fun to take the rubber duck collection for a swim and feel closer to the outdoors! Lol anyhow after many trails and tribulations the farm door seal leaks. Hopefully that can be fixed as we had to have a wall taken down to get the tub into the bathroom and the wall is setup again mudded and taped painted. So the jury is still out if this American standard is worth buying! Lol the rubber ducks will stay in dry dock for another fees days.or weeks!

SMALL GAME / Crows
March 01, 2020, 04:36:09 PM
I read an article online that I personally don't think is right but I wonder what others opinions of this is?

I read that crows had such wonderful memories they could pass that fear on to the offspring genetically!

I maybe wrong but that seems more like a pile of road apples to me.

RELOADING / Reloading room
January 07, 2020, 03:08:20 PM
Well finally getting close to having the room built. I had 7/16 OSB on the outside of the room walls then had it covered in 5/8 fire rated gyprock. I wanted the room harder to break into. The door is a solid maple fire rated commercial door
With a commercial lock and hinges.   I had the floor layed today and took all of your advice and went with a vinal.plank flooring instead of carpet. I liked the idea of the warmth of carpet over what I did. But as you fellows said it is safer. I had a sprinkler put in the room as well so hopefully if anything happens that is bad I have enough time to get out of the house. So with the floor in I am waiting for a quote to bring the gun safes downstairs into the room. Get them anchored to the floor and then build the benches. So looking forward to the completed room. I had lots of plugs put in as more and more reloading equipment uses a small amount of power. Lol I look at the room and think I should have built it bigger. Not to worried it will be nice to have it the way it is. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions! Ps cannot remember who told me to just use two layers of half inch drywall but I am sure the drywall guy would have liked that better! So a bunch of sound advice from all!

RELOADING / Building a new reloading room
May 12, 2019, 03:55:20 PM
Well I had the room framed in a spot in the basement. It is going to be a L shaped room with the furnace room in the corner.  Bought some Roxal safe and sound insulation. It is a insulation that absorbs sound and has over double the heat uptake before it melts. On that note I had a sprinkler installed in the furnace room as well as a couple in the reloading room. I don't move so fast so I thought if there was anything unfortunate to happen it may buy me enough time to get out. I also have to get the interconnected smoke detector s installed. So I found a fellow who is installation the drywall. And I have another lined up to mud and tape. So when that is done get the painting done and I am thinking about a cheap but durable commercial carpet. Easy to see primers on if I drop any. So the cupboard s to build to set the work bench a up on. Thinking the doors I am.going to go a bit over board on. The base cabinet s. I got some solid maple 1 3/4 inch thick interior doors for almost nothing. A school order the wrong ones and they sat for ten years and I paid next to nothing for them. I will cut them for doors for the base and for doors for the top cupboards. I can build locks etc on them everything will be locked up well. The room has no windows and the two non concrete walls I screwed on 5/8 OSB under the drywall so much harder for some one to break in through the dry wall. A commercial door look on the room should be good then with my cheaper gun safes it still should be hard to get anything out of  there. Beyond the Canadian law so should keep a fellow really out of trouble if someone breaks in.  Thinking or how I am going to setup the reloading machine s. The long wall will be for shotshell reloaded then to decide where the rifle loaders will go as well as the pistol ones. Getting it all set up for easy use will be kind of fun. In many ways I think vinal flooring would be the best but the commercial carpet will.be warmer.im the winter. I had a room once with top end home carpet but I vacuumed up a few primers that went.off in the powerhead not sure I want to go there again. Thoughts on flooring I should consider would be welcome as is anything else. Regards

SMALL GAME / Gophers
April 03, 2019, 05:25:00 AM
Yes that time of year again. I was out to the farm on the weekend and lots of gopher holes around. Looks like they had a busy fall and summer last year. The sun is to shine today and they should be out to warm themselves and play in the sun. I might see if I can get a few today. I am on my way out in there today. I could finally shoulder a rifle so I think I may try a rim fire. See how that goes. I am thinking the gophers.are really safe today! Lol.

RELOADING / Building a new reloading room
March 30, 2019, 06:27:12 PM
In the process of moving and I got a room in the basement framed for a reloading and gun room. A few things that I am doing. It is located inside the basement with no windows in the room. I am lining the room on the outside with 1/2 inch OSB then a layer of 5/8 fire rated gypsum board on the inside and a other layer on the outside. I am going to put safe and sound insulation in the walls and ceiling. Also I am going to see if I can get a couple of sprinkler s in the room. A soild maple 1 7/8 thick with a commercial door lock on it. The door is also fire rated. Basically I am going to make a set of kitchen cupboards with every other base one missing. I am thinking about making the bench  just over four feet high. And put lockable doors on the base ones. I also think I should wire a bunch of plugs seems like many.new reloading items are electronic. The reason for the high base cabinet s if I have many of the six panel maple doors and I was thinking about cutting them so the panel looks right. I thought I could adjust the height of the chair. Bad idea? Any other ideas or must haves

SMALL GAME / Savage 17hm2 vs Gophers and badger
May 09, 2017, 05:28:16 PM
Well it tried out the savage 17hm2 shot a pair of gophers one at around thirty yards the other out just past one hundred yards. After the long shot a badger stuck his head out of a hole about fifteen feet away. I think I shot him in the head but perhaps on second reflection I may have hit him lower in the wind pipe. He went down the hole I took a crow bar out of the tractor and it is about three feet long the hole went farther than that. I could hear him in the hole sounds like gruggling I think he bled out in his lungs. I started to dig him out but did not have a shovel he was way down there. I am sure he expired as the noise quit. Moral of the story use a center fire. Always the problem when I only take one gun it always should be a big one.

THE NEED FOR SPEED / Moto Guzzi
April 11, 2017, 03:56:43 AM
I purchased a Moto Guzzi Centauro the other day. These were never imported into Canada. The one I got was brought in from the USA. Arkansas to be exact. I have always loved the look of these bikes I must be strange as not many were sold worldwide around 1700 total in a four year run.  A transverse mounted vee twin. 992 CC's and  four valve heads for a 95hp rating. I have not brought it home yet. Next week. Needs fork seals done but other than that looks like it's good to go. I hope I am not just trying to relive my youth! Here's a link to a picture of one off the web.http://moto.zombdrive.com/image-model/5389-moto-guzzi-centauro-4.jpg.html

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Gun show score
February 04, 2017, 04:14:58 PM
I went to the local gun show today. I was out looking for a Bushnell elite 4200. I found three of them and they were all used and almost what they sold them new for. No thank-you. Used optics to me are not worth more than fifty percent of new. Anyhow I saw a new in box Bushnell 4-12 with the built in laser rangefinder I bought it and another scope. I took them out to the truck and realized that the mounting clips were missing so I took it back a little disappointed as I was going to put that on a rimfire rifle and it was only 225 dollars. But the other one made up for it it was a kahles 2-7-36 American hunter series also new in the box about 35 Percent of new price. So quite happy about that one I have another one of those already and it has been a great scope. I might have to  buy a rifle to put it on.lol.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Car wreck to rifle
January 20, 2017, 08:59:26 PM
Last spring I had a gravel truck back into my VW. The short version of the story is there was a 1350 dollar .adjustment and the body shop was not ready when I was and vice versa. I got a lessor cash payout. I can live with a piece missing out of the grill and a mark on the bumper. So off to the gun store. The owner sold me his personal b mag stainless steel heavy barrel target model. That has the Boyd's laminate stock. He shot 25 shells through it and showed me the target. A Canadian one dollar coin covered a ten shot group at one hundred yards. There is a 4to14 scope on it with a decent set of rings. So I am quite pleased with the outcome of my small wreck my mom left me the car in her estate and now when the car is worn out and done I have a rifle from my mom!  I am quite excited to see what that round will do on gophers this spring. For better or worse I have the savage rimfire collection. I have one in each rimfire caliber. The 17hm2 is the only one not wearing a Boyd's laminate stock. I will get a wood stock for that one when I find one for it. That is a pre accutrigger model so it is inletted different. I should be able to buy shells for one of them at any time. At the moment I can buy WSM ammo for four dollars a box less than hmr ammo. I am going to pickup a couple of bricks of ammo for it as well. The dealer has the WSM on for cheap he told me when he was ordering hmr ammo he ticked the wrong box and has a huge amount of WSM by mistake so he is blowing it out. From what I have found it sounds like the group's tighten up with bedding under the barrel just Infront of the action and a recrowning. I will try the bedding first but I think I should shoot it a bit first and get the barrel broke in.

SMALL GAME / Cats and coons and foxes.
January 18, 2017, 10:15:42 AM
The cat numbers have all but disappeared on the farm. I had around fifteen cats this summer and I am down to one. I let her into the house normally they are barn cats but she needs protection. Anyhow my question is this do racoons eat cats? I think I may have some in the yard. Do foxes eat cats? Could either one even catch a cat?
