MODERATING THL / Trying to understand

At the risk of starting a firestorm.  I will pose this question.  What is the deal with the popularity of the Super magnums?   In the words of P.O. Ackley "The average American hunter cannot hit a flock of Circus tents at 1000yds."  I have found this to be true from personal experience, so why the attraction.  If it is more power that is desired  Why not jump from a .300 Win. mag. to a .338 win. Mag. to a .416 to a .458 to a.600 nitro etc.. Why use a .300 ultra Mag.?   The number people who can pull off  that 700yd shot under field conditions is far outstripped by the number of people who own these rifles.

While hunting big game I try to keep my shots under 200 yds. as I feel To be an ethical hunter I owe it to the animal a quick clean kill. If I  do blow a shot they also have less of a head start if I have to track it.   Getting back to my original question.  What is the attraction to the velocity monsters?

I  think on this one I would have to go with the 6.5X55.   For 20 years I have shot over a dozen and a half deer using a 140gr Nosler Partition and have never lost one.  It has the right combination  of accuracy, deep penetration and modest recoil.   While the  .260 will do the same thing, the old Sweede does it at lower pressures and is therefore not as hard in the action.

One thing to keep in mind is there are soooooooo many great cartridges out there that  it is a hard choice.  I guess what I'm trying to say is the best choice is the rifle you have.

BLACKPOWDER/MUZZLELOADERS / 32 cal

I have a 32 cal Squirrel  rifle.  Does anyone have any idea what the recommended powder charge is for a round ball?  I have had this thing for years and never fired it.

This is my favorite. Accuracy, penatration, flat shooting and mild recoil all in one package.  I took a big 8-point with mine last week.  It did everything I've come to expect from it over the years.

John, I think the answer to your question has  to do with the average  American hunter simply not knowing.  Most hunters I have encounterd don't research.  they get their anecdotal information from friends and reletives who in turn did the same.  Research takes a lot of effort.  This is unfortunate.  I have a friend who bought a 7mm Rem Mag. and  is now a very unhappy with it as all his shots are under 100yds and at that range he found it to be very destructive on deer.  He is now considering a 260 or a 7mm-08.  Now before I ruffle any feathers out there keep in mind I consider the 7mmMag. a great round, but for these S.E. Georgia deer it is a bit much.  It's better suited for Elk and Moose  unless it is used where very long shots are made.  Either way dead is dead.

Right on Klallen. Dare to be different.

If  velocity is what you want It looks like this could do it for you.  I personally believe I owe it to any game animal a swift clean kill.  This cartridge outreaches MY ability to judge winddrift . Not to mention the mirage I have experianced with really big scopes.  As I am but a mere mortal I try to keep my shots under 300 yds.   Yes ,I do own a magnum.  But I built it for the energy and penetration.
