You must happier than dog with 2 tails, billy.
Wish someone here in Oz could build something like that.
I'd be looking for a cool cartridge combination right now if they did!

Kombi, a cracker it is! Can't wait to crack a deer with it!

Quote from: LvrLover;82728Any pics? Will it still take the shotgun barrels? And what was the damage?

I paid $1800.00 for the shotgun, the case coloring, the 405 conversion...and yes, the shotgun barrels fits and are functional. Pics can be found on youtube...405 conversion. jwhitegunsmithing.

I had a Stoeger 20 guage coach double barrel shotgun converted to a 405 double rifle. This is a fine gun! Hornady has ammo for it...3 choices, but I'm having my brass reloaded by my brother.

//www.jwhitegunsmithing.com did it for me.

Just got one of these in early August. Took it out and shot a couple of hundred rounds. Unbelievable rifle...7.63x39 is a hard hitting round.

Kas, did you make the conversion to 6.5x284? I had some 140 gr., Hornady SP, Nosler partitions, and Sierra Gamekings all loaded to 2800 fps....Shoot perfect from my Steyr Prohunter 6.5x55.

I'll send the loading data if you are interested. Billy

Quote from: firstshot;32730Gmoney...........The average chronographed muzzle velocity for 25 Rounds is 2,830 FPS for 2,578 FtLbs. I'm really loving the 7MM-08! Switched over from a 30-06. 7MM-08 is just so much more of a pleasure to shoot. Can't wait to see how it performs on game.

Buchshot...........I've been drooling over a Marlin 1895 45/70 (22" BBL). Don't really need a 45-70, just think they would be a hoot to shoot.

Brithunter........glad to hear of good results with the HotCor's! This is my first year with the 7MM-08 and the HotCor's. Think they will work fine as long as I do my part!

Make your first shot count!

Hey guys, I just killed a nice 7 point buck with Federal 150 gr. Power-Shok with the Speer Hot-Cor bullet. It smacked the deer hard, going through both shoulders and knocking the buck down where I hit him. I am shooting a Steyr 7mm-08 Mountain with a 20" barrel. This is a great combination for whitetail.

Rick, after my grandson took this doe at 250 yards with such devasting results, I thought to myself, "Why would you need anything else for deer?" I have a Ruger with a full wood stock and stainless steel barrel. I think it is 18 or 20" barrel. I shot a 6 point buck with it and it dropped in its tracks. So far, two hits, two drops, no chasing around or tracking in rattle snake infested woods in the middle of the night. The 257 Roberts makes plenty of sense to me, for me and anyone else including kids.

This is fun stuff to talk about.

WHITETAIL / Re: what grain bullet?
October 04, 2007, 06:23:34 AM
Try the 165 gr. and the 180 gr. and see which one feels best and shoots best. Check out the Federal Power-Shoks. These are the "hot core" bullets and are devasting on deer. I killed a 7 point buck two days ago with a 150 gr. from my 7mm-08.  The bullet went through both shoulders and the deer went down in a heap. These bullets are half price of the premium rounds, even less expensive than the Fusion cartridges and every bit as effective as far as teminal performance is concerned.

As you know, almost anyting on the market these days is effective against whitetail deer. In South Carolina it is still legal to use 22 rimfire in some areas....and some of the state wildlife agents still do in human populated areas to control the deer population. 22-250, 223, and anything larger will destroy a deer if put in the boiler room. So, any 30-06 round is more than sufficient. Get the one that shoots best out of your rifle.

Quote from: subsonic;65412I'm looking around for a youth deer rifle for a left handed 11year old.

I'm trying to split the difference between recoil, rifle weight, and adequate power.

I've been talking to some friend's who have the youth Rossi single shots in .243 for their sons - not impressed - bullet is too little/light IMHO and recoil/velocity/blast is more than he needs for good shooting in a rifle that light.

The shots will be limited to inside 50yds.

My 6.5x55 CZ550, when loaded down some to 2000fps with a 120 or 140gr bullet is OK off of a bench, but the rifle weight, at close to 9lbs fully dressed with scope, sling, and full mag, is too much for him to shoot unsuported, and it is a right handed bolt gun for a lefty.

I need something with a dressed wight under 7lbs, or maybe lighter.

My Win 94 30-30 with aperture sight is not bad for weight, and is ambidextrous, but I don't want to chop the factory stock down to a length of pull he can handle, and full power 30-30's kick the rifle around a bit more than he likes. I have considered buying a stock from Numrich to chop and loading down to around 1800fps.

I found a used Hand-Rifle in .25-06 for a great price that I am considering. I'm not afraid to chop the stock and barrel length and I know someone that will turn the barrel profile down to get it down to weight and size. I would put an R3/Limsaver pad on it for him. I thought I could load the .25-06 to about .250 Savage levels with a 100gr bullet, but I wonder if there are any bullets that will work OK for whitetails at this velocity any more, and I wonder what the recoil of this combo will be like.

Just sort of thinking outloud and looking for ideas and input....

Check out the 257 Roberts. 117 Hornady BTSP. Ruger Hawkeye. Best all around cartridge for kids. Billy

WHITETAIL / Re: Best youth rifle for Texas Whitetail?
October 03, 2007, 07:37:11 PM
Best all around caliber is the 257 Roberts. Hornady has 117 gr. btsp and Ruger has come out with this caliber in the new Hawkeye. Minimal recoil for kids and as deadly as a 25-06.

My grandson killed a nice doe at 250 yards. The bullet left a hole the size of a fist at the exit hole.

Can't go wrong.
