FIREARMS & OPTICS / Handgun Scope on a rifle
December 18, 2007, 07:21:28 AM
I have just purchased a Marlin 1895GS in 45/70 for Bear and Moose hunting. I am interested in mounting a scope, scout style and like the idea of a variable 2-6 or 2-7.
I already own a 336c with a Leupold Scout and am very happy with the set up. My question is, are there any disadvantages in mounting a handgun scope on a rifle?
The scope I'm looking at is a Bushnell Legend, will these scopes handle the recoil of a 45/70 shooting 420 gr Garrett loads?  The Bushnell has 20" of eye relief and claims to be fool proof on  454 Casull.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Custom Rifle Stocks
January 16, 2007, 08:30:06 AM
I have been toying with the idea of putting a custom monte carlo walnut stock on my
Win Model 100 and need some info on where to look. I have been searching the web a little bit but it would be helpful if someone has a little experience with ordering a custom stock and how much I can expect to pay.
I would like a nice good looking stock that will be used for deer hunting and pleasure shooting. This gun is priceless to me so I do not have any concerns regarding keeping it original for retail value, this rifle will not leave my family.
The original stock has been refinished once, but poorly. I will keep this stock and
refinish it in time but I am looking for something a little more unique for this rifle.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Savage 120A
January 15, 2007, 11:30:14 AM
I have recently inherited a SPRINGFIELD Savage Model 120A Single shot bolt for 22 short long or rifle. This gun was purchased in 1960 and appears to be in flawless shape,
good blueing, no nicks or dings. My question is regarding the safety action of the bolt. All
rifles I have owned all have crossbolt safeties except this one. I understand that I need to manually cock this rifle by pulling back on the back end of the bolt, but when it is cocked how due I get back to a SAFE mode or unload the gun without firing it? I know I
must be missing something here but I have never owned a rifle of this type.
If anyone is familiar with this type of rifle your knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Model 100 .308 problem
June 29, 2006, 12:22:24 PM
I have a Winchester Model 100 Semi in .308 (1961).  I have just done a full dis-assembly of the action to clean the gas ports about 1 month ago. I was at the range last week shooting Speer 165 gr and they would not fire. The firing pin is not damaged and it does make what looks like proper contact with the primer, the primer is indented. I tried 3 different cartidges and the same thing each time.
The ammo is about 5 years old and I did not have anything else to shoot that day, so I left confused. Is it the ammo or is it in the re-assembly of the action?

Before I cleaned the gun it worked just fine, but I had not fired any of the speer cartidges before.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Is this guide nutz?
June 29, 2006, 11:17:31 AM
I have been looking at Black Bear guides for northern WI for 2007 and have had some interesting conversations regarding proper calibers for this hunt. I had planned on using my Marlin 336C in 35 Rem to hunt over bait at 20-45 yards. My thought is that the Buffalo Bore 220 gr would be perfect for this application and the 35 would have plenty of killing power, but the last guide I spoke with will not allow any calibers under 30-06 and preferably 300 mag or larger with scopes only.
I have a 300 Wby mag that would be fine but I am paying for this hunt and want to use my weapon of choice as long as it is a reasonable caliber. The Black Bear in this area average about 175 lbs but can get as big as 400 lbs.
I have already decided to pass on this guide but wanted to hear some expert opinions.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Laser Bore Sighting
March 23, 2006, 06:42:38 AM
I am looking at purchasing a Laser Bore Sighter to pre-sight my 35 Rem Lever
with a Lymans Aperture, also my 50 Cal muzzleloader with Tru-Glo sights. I have seen some that come with O-rings for the bore and others with tapered adapters that slide into the bore. My goal is to just get on the paper without the use of too much ammo.
Does anyone have any feedback on the various bore sighters that are available?
Any thought positive or negative would be helpful.

I would consider spending up to $85 or so.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / First Youth Rifle
February 15, 2006, 09:21:14 AM
I am looking at purchasing a deer rifle for my oldest son. I like the idea of a single shot like the H&R 1871 Ultra in either 25-06 or 243.  I would also use the rifle for coyote and antelope. What other calibers should i consider? Is the H&R 1871 a descent rifle?

THE CAMPFIRE / Deer Camp Help
February 13, 2006, 01:18:55 PM
I am looking for a good tent for fall hunting and fishing, since I am in Northern Wisconsin it is imperative that I have a wood burning stove. I have been looking at the Cabela's Big Horn II tent because of the size and weight, especially for the remote fishing trips when I would need to transport via boat or canoe.
Does anyone have any input on a good tent for my needs? Typically it would be used by 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 kids under 10 yrs old.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Semi-Buckhorn Iron sights
November 16, 2005, 12:25:45 PM
I have just purchased my first Lever Action, Marlin 336C / 35 Rem.  I plan on sighting in this rifle in the next few days and I am unfamiliar with using the semi-buckhorn iron sights. I plan on changing the rear to a Lyman aperture but not until next year. Any hints on sight in and adjustment would be helpful.

In the area that I hunt Whitetail my shots should not exceed 100 yards.
  Will use Remington 200 gr.
