June 24, 2023, 12:56:44 PM
I finally have a contractor who will fix the house. Much more damage found that is in addition original guesstimate. We haven't had any rain around here since the tornado, however, we are under a sever Weather Watch tonight including severe thunderstorms and tornado watch!

I was going to sell my Husqvarna M1600. The rifle was born in early 1954 SN166522. It is marked 30-06 U.S. and has the crown nitro seal on the barrel. The plastic butt plate has the Husqvarnabrinks crest and an import mark from Williamsburg Virginia. The rifle itself is a modified small ring Mauser and has many improvements like the long easy to use safety and of course the huge claw extractor. The rifle is in near mint mint condition with a 23 1/2 barrel that is bright and gauges at <.1 ME.. I love the schnable forend and the checkering on the grip. Operationally it has two feature I really like....the easy button you press down to remove the bolt and the easy pull toggle to drop the floorplate. Check out the pictures of this 69 year old treasure which I am not going to sell!

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Tulsa trip
April 10, 2023, 10:33:22 AM
The big Gun Show at Tulsa will probably be my last, why......Too many non gun sellers taking up space and the long lines to just get in. That said I did sell a M1Carbine and found new deer rifle for Owen as he has now outgrown his Mossberg Youth .243. I was looking for a .270 for him resulting that Rick, Owen and Evan will all be shooting the Winchester .270 simplifying the reloading effort. I found him an unfired Smith and Wesson in , 270. I bet everyone is shaking their heads ?????? Smith and Wesson? Yep, here's the story. Back in the mid 70's S&W went up against Sako and Weatherby and designed the rifle. They were built in Japan by Howa for 2 years and the program was abolished. The 1500 was and is a fine rifle and came in standard and deluxe models. Not many of the  deluxe rifles were made (nobody seems to know how many) and I found one in .270. Here are some pictures. As you can see it looks like a cross between a Sako ans a Weatherby.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Happy B'day and Merry Xmas, Evan
October 26, 2022, 12:53:33 PM
Evan is a sophomore this year at Piper HS. He has a 25 at the school's trap range this year, completed Trig and Geometry last year and taking Calculus this year. Evan has never gotten anything less than straight A's in school and is in the gifted program. He is also on the swimming and baseball teams. The other day he gave me a course on Fibonacci Numbers. So......I gave him my little used .270. He will shoot it tomorrow for the first time and kill a big buck on the Missouri Youth season which opens this Saturday. I checked the loads a little while ago. Shot 1&2 then down 4 clicks for 3&4. We'll be sitting in the South Stand and the max range there is 130 yards.

THE CAMPFIRE / Plovers
June 18, 2022, 03:57:31 PM
I have a pair of Killdeer who have a nest adjacent to my driveway. These are very special birds. I see them at least twice a day and the babies should hatch soon. What makes them so neat is their bravery. When you get close to the nest the Female will come up on the gravel and run down the road in front of you. Then you slow down to a stop and they put on a show that only God could have visioned. They go into their broken wing, hobbling routine drawing the would be nest bandit away from the nest. In tune with the female the male races down the road....a further distraction. These are the most fun birds I have ever watched. Pic 1 is the female walking calmly away from the nest. As you near she spins to the right or left (pic 2&3) in the classic broken wing award and the nest is saved again and she bolts in the air and does a 180 back to the nest while the male is still teasing down the road.

SEND IN THE CLOWNS! / Bible Lesson
March 15, 2022, 07:41:10 AM
Ecclesiastes 10:2 (NIV) - "The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left." It surely can't get any simpler than that.
Spelling Lesson:
The last four letters in American..........I Can
The last four letters in Republican....... I Can
The last four letters in Democrats........ Rats.... End of lesson!

THE CAMPFIRE / Ferruginous Hawk
February 26, 2022, 10:12:47 AM
You will all think I'm wrong, however, I have never seen a hawk this large. Initially I mistook it for a Bald Eagle. According to the research on the bird it was noted that it's rarely seen this far East. The Hawk had landed next to Eric's decoy plastic deer and was pecking at it. I ran an grabbed my camera but the dogs chased it off. It landed in a tree some 150 yards away so I took this picture. Its fully feathered legs are another feature it shares with the Golden Eagle. Perhaps I'll do some scouting for it as the weather is moderating.

THE CAMPFIRE / Russia
February 24, 2022, 05:29:08 AM
They are at it again. Putin is what he is and socialism is what it is. I hope people are understanding all this aggression and what the end game is. Putin picked the perfect time to do this as we are stuck with our experiment for 3 more years. God Bless the USA.

BOWHUNTING / Eric's Buck
October 23, 2021, 01:22:45 PM
Eric nailed a 12 pointer. He missed on the 30yard shot but the Does continued to feed so the Buck walked back out and gave him a second chance at 40 yards. In all the excitement he grabbed another arrow and hit the Buck thru the rear of both lungs and passed through. The Buck took off and Eric found the arrow and called me. The arrow he hit the buck with was a small head (1inch) he keeps for Yote and Bobcats. The Buck left no blood trail but we found him in about 45 minutes. He made  about 160 yards and dropped stone dead. It's his second biggest Bow Buck he has ever shot and was really tickled....so was I!

RELOADING / The 280 Ackley project
September 15, 2021, 01:01:15 PM
I've had an atomic bomb in the house for over a year waiting for final assembly and deer season. So I found my new box of 280 brass, have some 12 pounds of IMR4831, a new box of 140gr Accubonds and began the fireforming this afternoon. For all of you who wasted expensive bullets for fireforming, I have a very cheap and effective alternative. By a box of Aunt Jemima Cream of Wheat, some of your favorite pistol powder(I use Bullseye) and some .22 patches. Prime your new brass, dump in the powder to the base of the neck roll up a patch and cram tightly (I use use a ball point pen retracted). Put on Ear protection, chamber the loaded shell and pull the trigger. It goes bang and this happens..........!

Collector's Corner / CMP M1 Garand
July 15, 2021, 06:46:53 PM
This one is a Service Grade and arrived on Monday after a 6 month wait (they are really backlogged- (I guess it's a covid thing). Anyway, I stickied for a good bore and I hit the lottery. They sent me a 5.70 M HRA with the original 10-55 barrel which ME is 1+ and TE is 2. The really good part is the stock and handguards. I have never seen a prettier Birch stock on a Garand.
