ELK HUNTING / Olympic peninsula elk
November 03, 2008, 08:51:07 PM
Spent last weekend out on the west end looking for the elusive creatures. I saw one 3 pt down and a whole lot of sign but not a single animal. Supposed to be 12,000 animals being chased by less than 600 hunters but for some reason, all I ever saw was hunters.....

Going back this weekend and it ought to be a riot, Forks is forecast to get 15 inches of rain (just on Saturday). Its kind of like putting on all your clothes and standing in the shower. A cold shower. All day long.

HUNTER'S GEAR REVIEW / Handheld GPS
July 11, 2008, 05:04:30 PM
I have been considering gettting one and have been doing a bit of research. I want something with USGS maps (or similiar) and most of the car units just have street maps.

Last year I hunted the NW corner of the Olympic peninsula. It was difficult to coordinate very poor quality county maps (that had the private owners road numbers) with USGS maps (that were made in the 1960's and had none of the new roads) with satellite photos (which showed the recent clear cuts but were of low resolution) and finally to the actual terrain (which was low rolling hills with few prominant features). I could usually guess where I was but it was possible to be a ridge off one way or the other. Add in some low visibillity (like the sun being on the other side of the earth or some pea soup fog) and it was 'lost in the ozone'.

Anyone use one? I was looking at the Garmin Colorado 400T.

THE CAMPFIRE / The boys of summer--
April 29, 2008, 07:29:46 PM
--mid spring anyway. The local bachelor group in an appropriately named place called Happy Valley, just south of Sequim, WA. There also is a companion cow herd of about 40 or 50. Most of the locals love them, but some of the transplanted urbanites, umm, dont.

This was taken last Sunday...

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Walther G22
April 08, 2006, 01:23:54 PM
Anyone have any personal experience with one? General comments?

The purpose would be for general plinking, both youth and adult.

Some plus's I see:

Overal length about 29 inches with a 20 inch barrel.

Adjustable pull length.

Built in rails.

Some down issues:

10 rd mags.

Get the same thing by converting a 10-22.

Dedicated left or right hand use.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Smooth bore 22 LR?
March 18, 2006, 06:48:27 PM
I was perusing a gun manufacturer's website and they list a smooth bore 22 rim fire.

Call me dense but can someone explain to me what purpose such a firearm would be useful for?

Thanks!
