RJ Jr. left today for a 4 year hich in the Army. His basic will be in Ft. jackson, then medical specialist training in Ft Sam Houston, then to Ft. Benning for jump school, then to RIP, probably in Ft. Lewis.

I miss him already

We will take care of him RJ, no worries.  Something to be proud of there, it takes a special person to enlist in the Army during times of conflict such as these.  Not only should you be proud of him, but proud of yourselves for raising such a fine upstanding young man.  HE is what makes America the envy of the entire world.

PS
Whatever you do, don't write "Please Smoke ME Drill Sergeant" on the outside of the envelopes of his letters, they will oblige.  And if you send him a box, remember he will most likely be sharing it with 30 other hungry young men.

I know it has to be hard to see your child leave for the military.  But like he says you should be proud.

It must be hard watching one of your children walk out the door to start his own life, but I am assuming it is very satisfying also. Your son has made his own choice and will now make an impact on the world. I am sure the Army will help him do just that. God Bless.

Tell him thanx RJ. I know he'll have a good time at Ft Sam, I did.

RBH, he's pretty excited about it.  He wanted to join right out of high school but we talked about it and he decided to wait. Now that he's 21 I think it will be easier for him, plus with his 2 years of college he went in as an E3.

You're correct on all counts.  Older folks do better, rank is good, college usually doesn't do any harm and it wil open up options such as Warrant Officer and OCS if he decided he wanted to go that route....

warrant officer peaks my interest, I just never had time to go to the school. Attended one weekend of OCS up here, then they decided to move it to new hampshire, I resigned after that. they are putting to much emphasis on degrees if you ask me. I seen some good men lose their rank because they did not have a "bacheolers degree". Not right if you ask me. God Bless.

An update on PFC RJ Jr.

He graduated Basic on 4 April and was sent packing to Ft. Sam Houston on 5 April for his AIT. The way it sounds Ft. Sam is a good place to go to learn how to be a combat medic.

He scored a 36 of 40 to get his expert marksman. This after a practice round of 39, he was a bit upset with himself. He got to shoot the AT4 rocket launcher that he said was "loud as heck, but sweeeet" the 50 cal.? "awesome"

He's having the time of his life. A bit board at times but he said he learned how to shut down when they had to hurry up and wait. Like the time the Marines started the rifle range on fire and his platoon had to wait for the fire to get put out so they could practice. His response? "Stupid jarheads" :greentongue:
