Is anyone else getting fidgetty about squirell season. I have to wait until Oct. 1 for the season to start here in TX. I have been killing some paper at the range making sure that the .36 is ready to make some meat. Myself I really enjoy going after the limb bacon and cottontails around here. Its just easier to go out after work and get a few than having to drive several miles to get to the deer woods. I can drive about 8 min. and be in the squirell woods, it takes almost 1 1/2 hours to make it up to the camp for deer.

Aug 15th here in Georgia.  I only got out for squirells one day with the boys last year, and no luck.  Hopefully I'll get out more this year.  I have the opposite situation here.  I can bowhunt deer behind the house, but no firearms.  For guns, whether it's squirell or deer I have to drive at least an hour.  I suppose I could use a pellet rifle out back for squirells.

Squirrel season usually starts around the middle of Aug. here in Ky. too. I don't squirrel hunt as much as I used to. It takes me about ten minutes to get to the squirrel woods depending on where I want to hunt. I could shoot from the back door but I like the squirrels that hang around the house. I won't allow anyone else to shoot them either.............Paul H

I must admit, I am getting alittle antsy...Seasons starts Aug.25th here..
Had a spring season (May thru to June 10th)  but it's not the same....The
fall of the year and upcoming deer hunting season casts a different light
on things....I'm about the same as with Mr. Hoskins....Live right on top of
my hunting / fishing exploits...Hunt with scoped Ruger rifles mostly.....
CVA inline and compound bow...Love to squirrel hunt:biggthumpup: .............BH51

and by my reckoning they dont taste any different what ever time you shoot em
(many thanks to my friends on this site for drawing my attention to the fact that the tree rats are quite tasty and furnishing me with a few recipes)

all year ound here as well, but the mosquitos and flies are way too thick to be in the woods for any amount of time and enjoy yourself.  but i do enjoy to go after the little buggers, only reds here though, of any number anyway.  the grays all live in town.

Sav17, it would be bad for the police and politicians, not to mention myself, if I lived in a country with such restrictive gun laws as you have. I would undoubetdly become a criminal. We have enough Socialist do gooders here. ..............Paul H

Justin,
didn't you eat some reds awhile back? how was that?

As Euell Gibbons used to say - "Many parts are edible." However, so are pine trees.

I'm not sure how Justin will reply, but for me the following is absolutely true. Pine squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) (AKA red squirrels) taste like what they eat... pine cones. Yech!

I could hunt red squirrels year 'round here in Alaska, but it's not the same kind of hunting that grays (Sciurus carolinensis) and foxes (S. niger) offer, and there is NO comparison with regard to taste or quantity of meat per squirrel.

Hi justin we dont get many reds in the uk they quite rare since the greys invaded and vertually wiped them out
Reds are protected but greys are classed as vermin the ones in my area at least they feed on hazel nuts and acorns not pine so taste really good

Paul,
that it what I have heard around here, reds taste bad. doubt I will ever find out for myself. Justin goes out and hunts them alot, I don't go because I am not much on killing what is not going to get eaten. But to each his own. He had told me one time he was going with a friend and they were going to cook them. either they did not, or they tasted so bad he did not want to comment.

sav17,
it is just the opposite around here. red squirrels are everywhere. could kill them all day if you desired. I have only seen two gray squirrels in my area and they were in the middle of town. I do hear they are good though.

yes same here in the north of england, theres a big plot going on to stop the blighters spreading between the lakes and scotland where theyre decimating the reds, its the diet of the reds thats letting them down, where as the greys arent fussy at all and strip the trees the reds need to feed off. but theyre already there,we are having a grey epidemic at the moment, the steps being taken to eradicate them are huge, poisons and allsorts, similar to myxy for rabbits!!only its to sterilize them, why dont they just let us airgunners have an open day??,im sure we could save the government a fortune,

Squirell Season starts here in VA next saturday Sept 1st iam counting the minutes untill then

do you have designated areas to hunt ,or do you just gain permission on certain land? even though theres an epidemic over here we can only shoot them on land we obtain permission  on, they dont open an area for some hunters to clear them out, gun laws are really tight here, theyre talking of introducing stricter air gun laws now! well have to use blow pipes soon
