THE CAMPFIRE / Love the new look
June 25, 2023, 07:44:30 PM
It's been a while, but after a phone call from gitano while I was at work (a pleasant distraction from learning the intricacies of a new Cat 16M blade) I figured I'd better check out the new digs.

Just in case I want to clean it up a bit after stripping the nasty refinishing job done by he previous owner.

Yeah Rick, I fell into this one. I even found some Lapua brass for it. That should last a lifetime.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Unicorn of Winchester Rifles
October 02, 2022, 07:28:50 PM
I picked up this pre '64 M88 in .284 Win. One of 2600 ever made.

It is currently in pieces for what appears to its first ever out the stock cleaning and action "slickering" job and stock refinishing.

Some of the parts (on the right) have already been smoothed  (400, 1200, 2000 grit then crocus cloth) then reblued.

RELOADING / Re: case weights

As long as they are accurate, case weight is really a non issue especially with the volume the Sevumag has.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / A New 788!!
July 17, 2021, 08:52:20 AM
On a recent trip I found this

A lovely 788 in .308 complete with a period 3-9 Redfield Widefield on Burris mounts and Weaver bases. A regular cornucopia of hardware.

Still need to try her out.

THE CAMPFIRE / Re: Reloading supplies
February 05, 2021, 10:01:54 AM
I learned pre Clinton to buy when the supply is there even tho I don't "need" it and only buy powder in "kegs" of 4 pounds or more. No more single pounds unless it's something I dont use a whole lot of. Saves the embarrassing "I don't have any _______, woe is me!"

When the the 264 kneadmore craze used up all the H4350 and GM210M primers I was "short" but not hurting. Now I have plenty of both.

Am I hoarding? That depends on what's considered hoarding or being prepared.

MAKING STUFF / Re: New Deer Stand
October 03, 2020, 06:36:28 AM
That is some green pasture you got there Rick!!

It's so dry here I put the stock tank across the road and have been filling it for the deer. Yesterday I saw a desert  cottontail carrying a Desert water bag followed by a 4' prairie rattler begging for a sip.

The much coveted weeds in my driveway were being trimmed by this brute as I was making coffee.

Here's the table after the first coat of tung oil

Colors turned out amazing. Now as soon as the tung oil dries I'll start the bazillion coats of polyurethane. 🙄

Bench before tung oil

After tung oil

Table top after 1st coat of tung oil.

It will get a bazillion coats of clear exterior polyurethane after more sanding and another coat or two of tung oil, maybe, depends on how one looks in the morning.

THE CHUCKWAGON / Re: Sous Vide Bison Tenderloin

I et so much deer meat growing up and while in college I don't care if I ever eat any more :greentongue:

Elk is where it's at, but I've kilt enough of those and don't care if I kill another.

I'd rather watch the kids hunt now.
