FIREARMS & OPTICS / Re: Triple Shocks in 6.5's
February 09, 2007, 09:55:33 PM
Hi Paul, Fantastic!:jumpingsmiley:

I'm thinking .30 cal. I'm not sure of the cartridge. Perhaps .30-'06, or .30-'06 Ackley Improved, or .30 Gibbs. In addition to scouring the posts on THL, I've been reading Wolfe Publishing's Wildcat Cartridges. I'd like to shoot 165 gr Barnes for deer and elk. I don't know if it would work to also shoot lighter bullets, maybe 125's or 130's, for antelope. That would be nice, but I certainly understand that an antelope will succumb to a 165.

I'd like to shoot as fast as practical, with consideration given to the trade-off between actual velocity, case life, and reloading complexity. I like the concept of a wildcat with greater velocity, but I don't want to delude myself with make-believe velocities! Considering dates of publication, newer info on this and other websites, and new powders, I am unsure of the way to proceed.

I'm open to virtually any barrel length, and don't mind carrying an extra pound or so. This is to be a hunting rifle for the Mountain West, but I like to shoot and will punch lots of paper between seasons. I've thought about a longer barrel, heavier contour, with fluting.

Bottom line is: I'd sure like your input on this whole shebang!!! I am open!

Thanks tons!

Can you post a picture of the rifle/base/rings/scope? It's been over a quarter of a century since I purchased, but I think that's what I've got on a rifle of mine. If yours are the same, they're GREAT!

Hope we can get a pic!

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Sources for actions
February 08, 2007, 11:10:25 PM
Okay, men, where can I get the best action for the least $? Hey, I'm talking about rifle actions...what were you thinking?!?!

Seriously...it seems I've read about several of you regularly finding and purchasing good quality actions at reasonable prices. I'm about to start a project based on .30-'06, and I'd like to find a good action at a reasonable price. I'd prefer a Winchester pre-64 Model 70, but would also be interested in a good Mauser or Sako action. I must say that I'm lost in myriad Mauser actions, and know little about the Sakos, except that I want an earlier one.

Hey...I'm open to ANY suggestions regarding actions!

Thanks for the input!

Whew! I read the info you suggested on Optimal Barrel Timimg, Paul, but I need to read it over several more times. Without too much formal physics training, it leaves me a little in the dark!

This is a great topic. I'm quite interested in the Barnes bullets, and I'm about to have a rifle built, so I'd like to be able to apply such info to the new piece.

RELOADING / Re: Priming tools and accuracy
February 07, 2007, 09:09:56 PM
Thanks to everyone for your input regarding prining tools! After reading all posts several times, it seems that the Lee Autoprime is praised by all, but that other tools, including press mounted ones, are useful.

Now, I feel more comfortable, regarding accuracy and priming tools. Sounds like just a matter of personal preference. I guess I'll soon be buying a handheld priming tool, but I won't worry about cases loaded in the mean time!:)

RELOADING / Priming tools and accuracy
February 05, 2007, 08:47:48 PM
 I've always used the press mounted priming arm on an old RCBS JR press to prime my cases. I now have the option of using the priming device on my new Forster CoAx press, but have read that "hand held" priming tools are more uniform and accurate.

I want uniform and accurate reloads!

What benefit is there to the hand held tools? Seems to be quite a variance in quality if price indicates quality.

The instructions included with the Forster press indicate that it would/should be very uniform. Could be "uniform... good" OR "uniform...not so good."

Please give me your input on priming tools and the priming process.

Thanks!

Paul,

What is/Where can I read about Optimal Barrel Timing theory?

Thanks,

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Re: My latest creation....

Rick, do you, perchance, have any pictures of the components, in their "un-improved" condition? In other words, what did you start with? Pics of that might be really enlightening. If there are none of this project, how about taking some of the components of your next creation. It would be informative to see some "before" pictures!

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Visual acuity/Contacts/Shooting
January 22, 2007, 09:40:09 PM
Well...I'm almost 60, and my eyesight needs correction. I am primarily nearsighted, with some astigmatism. Until age 45, I used contacts successfully. Since then, I've used spectacles with multi-focal lenses.

Contacts don't get knocked off or fog up and yield better periperal vision. My near vision, without correction, is quite acceptable. With distance vision contacts, I will use "cheaters" for close up work.

After trying several, I have found comfortable lenses...BUT...My vision is NOT sharp with them. My reason for seeking contacts is to see targets clearly, at a distance! I want to differentiate deer and elk from shadows and brush, and see antlers. I am a good observer, but am frustrated with the lack of clear vision at distance.

Does anyone have experience with contacts for shooting? Can anyone offer suggestions? Are there any shooting optometrists or ophthalmologists out there?

Thanks, in advance, for your thoughts and suggestions!:)

Once again, I am very impressed with the quality of information offered by the members of this forum.

I only wonder how I will find the time to read relevant posted discussions that go back over a period of several years!

Thanks to All!

:undecided: Hi Aussie Pete,

I clicked on the URL to go to the Myna Bird page, and it didn't work for me. I'd be interested in learning more about this, and I appreciate your assistance! Maybe it's just a typo, or maybe the site has a new address.

Thanks,

Hi Rick,

Although I've not shot thumbhole stocks, I've handled them at dealers, and they seem to be very comfortable and naturally easy to point/aim. I like your rifle, and, were I considering such a caliber, I'd be on the phone to see if we could make a deal!

All the Best! Jim

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Re: M1 Garand

It seems to me that an M1 Garand ought to be a fine deer rifle, especially for carrying through brush and river bottoms! And for your long range hunting, you have excellent tools in the arsenal... Jim

Congratulations on the harvest! And good luck pheasant hunting. Right now in Colorado, not much is moving on the highways. The blizzard is past, but the roads are not safe in many places, due to heavy snows. Merry Christmas!
