FIREARMS & OPTICS / 405 Winchester Double Rifle
September 01, 2008, 05:21:35 PM
I had a Stoeger 20 guage coach double barrel shotgun converted to a 405 double rifle. This is a fine gun! Hornady has ammo for it...3 choices, but I'm having my brass reloaded by my brother.

//www.jwhitegunsmithing.com did it for me.

Just got one of these in early August. Took it out and shot a couple of hundred rounds. Unbelievable rifle...7.63x39 is a hard hitting round.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Browning BPR 30-06 Pump
October 03, 2007, 07:00:13 PM
I just purchased a Browning Pump Rifle and plan on taking it to the woods after I sight it in. Have not put my hands on it yet. Anyone know about the pump action on this rifle? I guess I bought it because it was unusual. I have a Remington 7600 in 35 Whelen that I am getting a trigger job on. It is accurate enough, i just find myself jerking the trigger because it is so hard to pull. Thought I would give the Browning a try.

Please share any info that you may have on this BPR.

thanks,  Billy

I have 4 new boxes of 270 Weatherby magnums to trade. I sold my Mark V Deluxe and no longer need this ammo. Will pitch in a partial box to anyone that could use this ammo and trade me for 270 WSM, 7mm-08, or 35 Whelen. Thanks, Billy

RELOADING / 7x57 162 Hornady Reloads
November 21, 2006, 06:21:51 PM
I am having someone reload my 7x57 rounds with Hornady 162 gr. SST bullets. Does anyone know what the Hornady manual puts the velocity of these bullets at? Thanks, Billy

CLASSIFIEDS / Rifles for sale
October 15, 2006, 07:46:18 PM
I am thinning out my collection of rifles. These are mostly at the "nearly new" condition as I have only hunted them once or only sighted them in and have not hunted them yet. Only the Winchester Model 70 made in 1964 has some age. However, it is in great condition and very little noticable wear. Here we go.

Ruger 1B 30-06 sighted in, never hunted, with BSA Catseye scope $500.00

Tikka T3 Varmint, blue heavy varmint barrel, 308 caliber. Hunted once....killed 8 pointer...great gun. Scope mounts, no scope. $525.00

Winchester Model 70 Super Shadow with scope New In Box. 270wsm $455.00

1964 Winchester Model 70 carbine (20" BARREL) 270 winchester with scope mounts. Great condition. Was owned by a friend whose wife only used it occasionally. $500.00

ELK HUNTING / Red Stag
August 21, 2006, 06:39:06 PM
This past Saturday, August 19, I was invited to a ranch just south of Austin, Texas to hunt Red Stag. You probably know that this is a European version of our Elk in the USA.

Long story short, I was given a free tag to take a beautiful 7x7 Red Stag. The owner of the property said the animal weighed nearly 700 pounds. It was nurished with high protein feeds as well as food plots and grass. It was an incredible experience.

I shot the Stag with a pre 64 Winchester Model 70 in 30-06. I used a 150 grain Remington Core-Lokt. The bullet went completely through the Stag and it ran about 25 yards before expiring. The shot was made at about 50-60 yards.

This was the animal of my dreams....I thought when I hunted in New Zealand, but I got mine in Texas.

"The stars are big, they're big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas!"

FIREARMS & OPTICS / 338 Federal
July 25, 2006, 03:12:14 PM
Just wondering if any body has any scoop on the 338 Federal. I see that Federal Ammo and Sako partnered in this one. What I see on the Federal ammo ballistics charts is a round that gives nearly identical ballistics as a 30-06 with the same bullet, and the 30-06 coming out better at longer ranges. So, where's the beef?

(This was with each having a 180 grain Accubond bullet)

FIREARMS & OPTICS / 257 Roberts Power
July 25, 2006, 02:51:42 PM
I just recently acquired an old J.C. Higgins in 257 Roberts. It has a 24" Shilen barrel and TImney trigger with the FN Mauser action.

I couldn't wait to try it out on deer this year. Yesterday, July 24, 2006, I took my grandson Wesley out to a farm here in South Carolina to shoot deer. That's right, deer in July. The farmer has a "nuisance permit" and can take deer out of his cotton fields because they destroy so much of the crop. Wesley, who is 12, and I sighted in the J.C. Higgins and his Remington 600 and at around 7:30pm went to the cotton field and climbed into a stand.

Now to make this short, at around 8:15 three does came grazing in the field at around 300 yards, a little too long to take a shot. We watched for about 10 minutes as they walked a little closer. At 250 yards I decided the shot was too long for the 243 in the shorter Rem 600, so I gave Wesley the 257 Robers and told him to take a shot. He had never killed a deer before but had missed one last year from shaking too much. He aimed at this one, shaking like a leaf, and said, "Pa, hold the gun steady!" I held the gun, he let go one shot and missed, shooting over the deer. The doe looked up and began to try to find out where the shot came from while we reloaded. I let Wesley take the next shot on his own. He was no longer shaking and fired his second shot. The doe went down instantly!

Words cannot descibe the joy this young man exhibited when I told him that he had actually killed the deer. When when skinned the deer we found a large quarter sized hole at the entry and a hole big enough to put your fist through on the other side. That rifle has incredible terminal ballistics. I was using the 117 gr. Hornady SP bullet. What else would a man possibly need if this medium round can do that much damage at 250 yards?

It was one of the greatest days of my life to help my grandson take his first deer. And, oh yes, we bloodied Wes up and took pictures.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Savage 99 250-3000
June 20, 2006, 07:00:09 PM
I just bought this beauty today. It is 95% condition and facinating. I put a cheap BSA scope on it ... cause I had it new and in the box and didn't want to buy anyting else or rob the rifles of good scopes...BSA Huntsman...the 250 shouldn't be too hard on it. I found some ammo for it in several places. Anybody know much about these 99er's?

FIREARMS & OPTICS / S&W 500 magnum
April 01, 2006, 06:04:02 PM
I just acquired a Smith and Wesson 500 magnum 4" barrel. I will carry this gun when I go to Alaska or anywhere esle in the lower 48 where there might be Grizzly encounters. Can anyone tell me something about what cartridge would be best for bear back-up?

I carry a 454 Casull in a Taurus Raging Bull for hunting dear and hogs....and a Ruger Bisley Vaquero 44 mag for fun and hunting. Any experience with the 500?

My question is whether the 300 gr Hornady Evolution caatridge would suffice for Big Browns or should I go with the bigger heavier loads?

I haven't shot this behemoth yet but can't wait to take it to the range.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Remington 8MM Classic Custom
March 21, 2006, 04:51:22 AM
I recently purchased a Remington Classic in 8mm Mauser. This is a new gun that has the famous classic style, however a bit boring. I sent it off to a gunsmith in Florida for an upgrade. I kept the barrel and trigger but had the following done to it.

Had the barrel fluted, and ported for recoil, had the trigger lightened up and the entire barrel and receiver, including trigger guard teflon coated.

Talk about a beauty....haven't shot it yet but bought some Hornady 195 grain SP and Nosler Custom 200 grain Partitions. These are two great rounds for deer and bigger game all the way to Grizzlies.

Anyone had any experience with the 8mm Mauser in modern firearms and cartridges>

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Blaser R93 7X57 Mauser
January 27, 2006, 05:27:12 AM
I just aquired a new Blaser in 7mm Mauser. At the range I was shooting Remington 7x57 140 PSP Core Lokts. I got MOA with the round but was wondering if anyone had a Blaser and any idea of special loads for this rifle for super accurate shooting.

VARMINT/PREDATOR / Predator Calls
January 05, 2006, 06:17:40 PM
I want to start predator hunting. Can you suggest some good predator calls for coyote, bobcat, and fox in the South Carolina area? I am interested in mouth calls and some cheap/effective electronic calls if they make any. Thanks, Billy

RELOADING / 7MM-08 120 gr. Hollow Points for Deer
October 07, 2005, 07:03:13 PM
For the sake of reduced recoil, I am planning on using the 7MM-08 Remington Express 120 grain Hollow Points on deer. Does anyone have experience with this or would know if this would be a good cartridge for medium to small deer in South Carolina? Thanks, Billy

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Can't get it to group
November 25, 2004, 03:49:40 PM
If anybody can help me on this, I would appreciate it. I have a Howa in 6.5x55 Swede. I loaded 130 Barnes X bullets at 2800 fps to use for deer. This rifle has an Australian scope calle Nikko on it and it looks substantial and pretty good quality. This gun, however, or this round, will not group. One shot is 3 inches low to the left and the next is 2 inches high to the right. Can you tell me what might be going on?

Thanks for any help on this. Billy
