BLACKPOWDER/MUZZLELOADERS / Re: Grettins all..
October 07, 2007, 08:51:17 AM
Quote from: DancesWithCoyoties;66896just wanted to say hi and you have a cool forum here!

Does anyone shoot real muzzloaders here ? you knwo.. flints, powder, lots of smoke
and noise... ?

interested if anyone is shooting a bedford, or maby a tennesee plain iron smoothbore in
.600 cal roundball ... need a good 100 yard load and patch type.

thanks!

My own smoothie is an old .66 cal that makes lots of smoke, lots of noise, uses a rock for ignition, and will "fling" a 422gr roundball at about 1275fps using 80gr FFg Goex, and it do it with "fair to midland" accuracy to 50 yds....meaning about 3 inches "iff'n" I do my part....by the same token 2.5oz of shot will take Quail & Chucker very cleanly out to 30 / 35 yds....but again that "if" thing shows up.

Now, I don't know if that will qualify as a "real muzzleloader" since this old dog was one of Turner Kirklands' specials from DGW back before such things came into vogue, and real muzzleloaders of the time could be bought for a lot less than $100....but, it's all I got in a smoothie configuration and it's what I make do with year, after year, after year.....

Quote from: Paul Hoskins;66947Paul, it seems to me BH has addressed the matter in a dignified and appropiate manner. Let his word stand. If DWC doesn't get the message from that response we don't really need his input if this is his best. ..........Paul H

IMHO, There is wisdom in this statement.

THE CAMPFIRE / Re: The Bum Has a Baby

QuoteAs I readied the camera again, it flew away carrying the rabbit and I still didn't get a picture. Sneaky little scroundrel and very cunning. .................Paul H

Well Paul, from his introduction, I wouldn't expect anything less.
If his Mom is truly the "Bum" you say she is, I would think he may be a bit camera shy, wouldn't ya think?... LOL

I have been observing Mama Finch feed her young from the back yard feeder, although they appear perfectly capable of feeding themself.... busy little gal she is, but nothing anyhere near as exciting as your Hawk story.

Good story, keep 'em coming.

SMALL GAME / Re: bunny bopping
July 22, 2007, 03:49:14 PM
Sounds like you lads are having a real ball hunting those rabbits.
After reading your posts I got to wondering what "kind" of rabbit you might be hunting? Is it the small cottontail variety or is it the much larger hare that is found throughout much of Europe?

Scoper-uk mentioned using a .177 ie...............
Quoteive just got a new hw 97k(i think that would be a beeman 97 to you guys)in 177 and it shoots amazingly straight with the right ammo, and has plenty of energy left for penetration at long ranges,

To me, I find it amazing that a simple air-rifle will have the energy to take one of those large european hares at the ranges mentioned.

You have my curosity up on this air-rifle! I would also like to hear a bit more on this rabbit hunting story. In the mean time, I will look up the Beeman 97 and learn a little more about this amazing little air-rifle. My garden has a definate need for such a little gun, since I now live in town, and it sounds as though this just might be the ticket.

12 Gauge, I remember you too! Bless your heart! At your age, it's absolutely great to know you have hung in there for so long.

It seems you were just a "pup" back about 2003, always talking about wanting to go hunting or fishing, or shooting, or whatever.
You always reminded me of my own Grandkids. And, I suspect that is not a bad thing. In fact, I just love it when young folks take to the field.

Some of you old timers tell me what happened along about 2003 / 2004. As I best recall, I could pull up the heading to the web site for awhile, but I could never log on. At first I thought it was just my old dial-up computer I had back then, but then someone told me the web site had somehow suffered a crash, or been hacked, or something to that effect.....I suspect 'outage' is as good a term as any.

Anyway, I do like what you guys have come up with now. As I said before, it's a mighty cozy web site!

BTW; Thanks for the nice welcome everyone........ It kinda gives ya one of them warm / fuzzies, if ya know what I mean.

Thanks for sharing Paul. The pictures made for a very nice post, and a first hand look at that little Red Tail.
I love your title, "The Bum had a baby".......very clever.

Glenn, I do definately remember you. In fact, a few years back I believe it was you that picked up one of the last "Bob Cat" muzzleloaders that were being sold at a extremly reasonable price.....wish they would find some more and do the same thing again!

Alboy, Yes, yes, yes....I recall a lot of good reading on your BP Forum.  That BP thread was always a nice read to end the day with. Hope some of those old timers are still around and posting. There was, at one time, a tremendous amount of knowledge hanging out on that thread.
I do hope, in my long absence, those boys have not found reason to drift off, as I am looking for a bit of visiting meself.

Any muzzleloaders on the forum from Central Washington State?

Give me a jingle if you're into hunting traditionally with side lock muzzleloaders. Having recently moved to Moses Lake, I would love to get in touch with some locals who would like to do some BP shooting.

After being gone for several years I can still recognize a few names...not bad for an old feller wouldn't ya say.:shy:
It seems to me the "look" of the forum is a new look, I could be wrong. It seems kinda fancy now. Actually, it looks quite nice.
I might just stay a spell, that is if you fellers will put up with me.

My name is Russ Baker and I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. A year ago I moved from the back door of the rain forest on the Pacific Coast to Central Washington, and I am now settled in at Moses Lake.... smack dab in the middle of the state. Well almost.
Anyway, it's a true hunting and fishing paradise.

My passion is Muzzleloaders, of the traditional type, and if Jay can remember me, he will agree we have have had some really nice threads about such things in the past.
I am also co-founder of the Traditional Muzzleloading Association, member of the NMLRA, member Washington State Muzzleloaders, member Green River Mountain Men, and a life member of the NRA.

I'm looking forward to learning something from you guys, and perhaps I can even share a bit of knowledge I have picked-up from time to time.
