THE CAMPFIRE / Re: Just a Gripe
April 10, 2005, 10:00:43 PM
Quote from: GmoneyI know many friends here in TX that have gotten tickets for going 1MPH over the speed limit.
When I was younger I was in the scouts "explorer" group attached to the State Patrol.  If someone were ticketed for going 1 mph over the limit it would be thrown out merely on a "profiling" charge.  The main question asked of the officer would be, "how many people to you stop, let alone ticket, for going 1 mph over the speed limit?"  If he said all of them then he would be laughed out of the room (figuratively) but if he said very few then they would tag him for profiling and the ticket would be thrown out.  Now if the person was also hit with posession or DWI or the like then that's a different issue.  Cops really need to watch themselves when they pull someone over to make sure that it's something that will stand up in court.
I got hit for doing 74 in a 60 over in Issaquah WA in the car pool lane and only got a warning.  I was polite to the officer and had a sticker on my window "vets vote Bush"   ;)

WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND? / Re: "MINUTEMEN" IN TOMBSTONE?

When I lived in Phx. they were in the news because the coyote' were shooting at them.  Seems that they were cutting into their business so they (the coyote') were popping off high power rifles at these militia groups.  I say mount some .50's on the border and put up some real enforcement.  Reach out and touch someone US style!!

Kit,

Like you I enjoy seeing the icon in the rating column stating that I'm subscribed to it however I'm in the forum enough that I don't need/want to be sent an email every time the thread gets updated.  Maybe this is something that can be addressed to the web developers.

Paul,

As a vet of the first Gulf War I want to say thank you to you!!

You served your country just as I have and deserve the same thanks and same respect that any military service member does whether during time of war or peace.  The disgrace that you were "greeted" with was inexcusable as you were only following orders and despite what Hollywood wants people to believe freedom is not free.  It takes people like you and me and everyone else who has served and hasn’t been able to come back to tell their story to maintain that freedom that they tend to abuse most often.
I feel that, in both situations the Vietnam era vets and the Gulf era vets, the media is to blame for the animosity toward the troops as they only want to give a portion of the story.  If only there was a “Paul Harvey” working for every media source to give “the rest of the story” then maybe the service members would get the respect that they deserve.
Many blessings to you Paul and again thank you for your service.

Dave

BOWHUNTING / Re: Accuracy Assist

Well I did it.  I went to the local pawn shop (closest thing to a sporting goods shop) and tried out all their releases.  I tested 1 Primos, 1 Vista, 3 True Fire, 3 TRU Ball releases.

The True fire releases ranged from 19.95 - 49.99 and were well constructed.  I considered getting the partiot for 19.95 until I found my prefered choice.  They all had a decent grip but I found myself holding the strapping with my fingers because the "shaft" of the release was still a little too short.  The Spitfire for 35.99 had a really nice wrist mount with velcro closure however the body was not long enough and the trigger was reaching only as far as my middle finger knuckle and there was no adjustment for this length.  The Hurricane extreme for 49.99 was a decent fit however the buckle closure didn't provide me with a snug fit on my wrist.  All releases had an adjustable trigger tension however were way too touchy for my inexperienced hands.

They only had one Primos release the .44 Caliper for 34.95 and this thing had every adjustment you could think of.  It had a comfortable velcro wrist strap and the release was a "pod" that attached to the wrist strap via a nylon strap with adjustable binding so it's length could be adjusted to the shooter's prefrence.  My only problem with this release was the feather weight trigger.  It took no preassure at all to release this device and it was already adjusted to it's heaviest trigger pull.

The Vista #4338 caliper release was 22.17 however it wouldn't even allow me to draw my 50# bow as it would slip off the string.  That one got put away immediately.

I found a product line by T.R.U. Ball http://www.truball.com - Company slogan: Jesus Christ is the Only Unlimited Resource!
This isn't the only reason I chose this product.  I found that this line had a unique feature that helped my nerves when drawing the bow back.  All other releases I tested are naturally open and require you to push the trigger forward to lock the jaws.  This line of releases has a different style where the jaws are under spring tension to remain closed and you have to activate the trigger to open the jaws to engage the release string.  I tested the Cyclone for 65.61 and the Stinger for 40.70 and I chose the stinger.  The difference between them was the Cyclone had a "pod" style release adjustable just like the Primos device as it was attached to the wrist strap with a nylon belt, and the Stinger had a hard shaft.  The length of the Stinger was adjustable (shorter only) but felt very secure against the full draw weight of the bow.  All of these releases had a tag attached to them stating that they were tested up to a 100# draw.  The only deciding factor was the price.  I didn't have the extra $25 to get the Cyclone.  Next I need to get a string saver noc so the release doesn't cause additional wear on my string.

Performance:
Using a mechanical release the energy pattern is totally different as it's more instantaneous compared to rolling off my fingers and bringing up the power a little more slowly.  This caused me to pull the arrows a little more than expected.  I detonated a couple arrows against my failsafe back stop (Steel storage container) at first trying to get used to the totally different release style.  The natural release point (using mech. release) is WAY different from the apparent release (using finger firing) so I had to adjust all my sight pegs left and up but it actually took about 5-8 inches off of my grouping at 20 yrd.

I hope this helps anyone else looking at releases.  I know that I'm not a pro by any means and didn't test a huge array of releases but it's an opinion and you can take it for what it's worth.

Hello,

When I set up my account I selected to have emails sent to me when a subscribed thread or PM was sent to me.  I have since gone into my account prefrences under user C/P and removed the option for email notification by selecting Do not send in the drop down box and yet I still receive notifications.  Any suggestions on how I can resolve this?  I don't want to remove my email address from the acct information because I want to have it avail for other members to contact me.
Thanks,
Dave

Maynard,

Print them out on a transparency and use an overhead projector (most churches still use them but once a week) and then get creative with a pencil or paint brush to draw the images onto the wall.

Just a little side.  The "west coast" that you refer to doesn't extend that far into the west coast states.  That philosophy ends at the cascade mountain range.  The rest of us use our heads for more than a hat rack. :)
Oregon and Washington have both been kicking around the idea for several years of splitting the state so the libs can have their stomping grounds without infesting the rest of us.

I'm not necessarily opposed to using a release and have been seriously considering one.  I just didn't know which way to run.  I'm not using any sort of glove, I used a finger tab once and broke two arrows due to "funky" flight patterns so I scrapped that idea.  I've never heard of shooting gloves other than rifle/pistol gloves.
right now I'm looking at about $30 for a release as I've spent a lot on arrows.

I recently picked up a compound bow and have been practicing a lot as you do with any new toy :)
My problem is when I release the arrow the string will tend to roll off my finger tip and occasionally (1/25 launches) the string appears to "unwind" and the arrow will choose a wild trajectory.  This has cost me almost $30 in replacement arrows.
I've considered getting a release but there's a couple different types.  One that attaches directly to the string and another that attaches to a loop tied to the string.  Other than the puritans that think shooting with any type of gadget is unnecessary are there any suggestions or advice on technique or what type of release to look into.  I don't have a lot of $ to buy top of the line.  The bow was a pawn shop special just enough to get into the scene.

THE CAMPFIRE / Re: Black Bear
March 30, 2005, 04:21:19 PM
Sounds like a fun hunt.  I'd want to be armed with more than a camera though.  The only experience I had with a bear was fishing on the Kenai river in Alaska '90.
My cousin and I were fishing and heard some rustling in the branches behind us.  He turned around and saw a "dog" looking at him and just kinda said hey boy what are you doing out here... then he took a double take and I looked at the same time as this "dog" stood up!!!  Here we are armed with fishing poles and a trebble hook...  Yeah we ran.  It wasn't a black bear it was brown and fairly small as far as bear goes but it was a memory to last a life time.

WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND? / Re: Military Pay
March 30, 2005, 12:08:45 PM
Just pulled up the pay scale and the everage troop with 3-4 yrs in the military will be an e-4 maybe e-5 this person will be bringing home to his well deserved family a whopping $1,700 per month.  In my job in the USAF I worked atleast 72 hrs per week.  Wow if I was still in doing my old job I'd be making about $4.75 / hour.  What's current minimum wage!?  $7.15  This may be great for an office job but if you're part of the rest of the 80% of the military forces you don't have a 40 hr work week.
