ELK HUNTING / Re: Payton's elk hunt

Well done Payton! What a terrific read!

Wonderful elk, grand old rifle, brilliant time with dad, gorgeous country, helpful neighbours, and - not to forget - healthy balance of class vs hunting. What's not to like?

She rocks those boots too!

That's a very good effort. The cam gear is extremely effective, even in that photo.

AUSTRALIAN OUTDOORS / A sunny walk in the stones
August 09, 2021, 01:39:34 PM
s been wet and cold down here for weeks, so with a beautiful sunny morning I decided to go for a walk down in the lava flow - the stones - just south of here.

I texted the landowner and he said that they had been having trouble from a fox taking lambs in a particular area right across the far side of the stones. With a westerly breeze the plan was to walk in a big anticlockwise loop, keeping an eye out for any foxes sunning themselves in the lee of any rocky ridges.

As I snuck up over one ridge a fox scooted out to the right. Knowing it would stop for a look I quickly sat down on a rock and was ready for the shot with the Annie .222 when it looked back:

I continued on and kicked out another three but no luck - a snap shot at a head in the bracken that missed (why do they pop up when I'm balancing awkwardly on stones?), another that blasted off through the stones without looking back, and the third that I rushed the shot as it was about to disappear into cover.

The misses were a bummer but it was good to be out with a rifle in hand.

Great read Paul. Looks like the usual suspects are still getting together to do stuff which is fantastic. Weird looking fish. I reckon you are on the money with those 'spots' being part of a sensory system.

I'm not sure I have seen that rifle before Paul - although I do have some catching up to do here on THL. Looks like an interesting piece.

Good work on the squirrels.

Nice Paul. Never heard of an Eastern Towhee. They look a little like a bird called a Willy Wagtail we have here in Australia.

Nothing like fishing, shooting and generally just messing about with good friends. Sounds like a terrific time. Thanks for posting.

Terrific outcome Bug and Bugesses! Nice shooting at distance ladies.

Are they different rifles in the photos? Bit hard to confirm, HB seems to prefer being upside down in his photo! Details on the rifles and loads would be great.

Beautiful old rifle there Rick. Looks like some very nice tiger striping in the stock. So I assume this is chambered in 30-40 Krag?

Quote from: gitano;154857I don't recall the months that your public schools are in session. Ours run from essentially September to June - fall to spring. Are yours in session then, or do you run from March to December - your fall to spring?

Paul

The school year over here is made up of four terms; last week was supposed to be the first week of the term 1 holidays. Due to COVID-19 the holidays started a week early. Term 2 starts next week but the kids will be logging in remotely from home.
