RELOADING / 22-250 Case ejection problems
March 10, 2012, 05:08:48 AM
Hey all so i was hoping to get some help on some issues i have had reloading for the 22-250.

I started reloading for the 22-250 for about 8 months now and found a load that works good for hunting coyotes out of my 700VTR, Tikka T3 and Remington Model 788. All has been going good all season until i got the call from my father saying that after firing a couple of the shells were jammed in the chamber and had one heck of a time getting them to eject. I reload based on the 8th edition Hornady hand book using 37.4gr of Varget poweder pushing a 40gr Vmax around 4000fps. Im not running the max load but wondering if my Lee Saftey Scale could be starting to have issues. Im affriad to be over pressuing the chambers. Especially the 788 since it is from the 60's.  I do trim my cases before each reload session. so what could possibly be going on.  any help would be much apprechated! thanks

Hey all so i finaly did get pics of my good friends Parker Hale safari in 222. Its one of the most accurate .222 i ahev ever shot but what really gets me is the high quality and craftsmanship of this fine varmiting rifle!.  My friend said the rifle would be for sale anytime soon if it ever did come up for sale but was curious about what the value of this might be. I believe his father payed under 500 Canadian for it 10 year + ago. Thanks again

RELOADING / 6.5x55 Swed M96 load
January 03, 2012, 01:30:05 PM
Hey all. So im faily new to reloading the 6.5x55 and would like some help. I have came up with a load that really works but would like to get a little more fps out of it for moose. I have tried loading up some hotter loads(2700fps) and my grouping is about 1" at 100 yards. Good enough i know but is there a possiblity of getting a load that is safe if the action around 2900-3000fps using 140gr Hornady Interlock Soft Point.

I got my deer load set at 2500 fps using a Remington Case, Federal 210 Primer, 43.0gr of IMR4831 and a 140gr Hornady Interlock Soft Point. 3 shot Grouping looks like this(photo attached) at 100yrds.

Thanks for any help offered!

RELOADING / 6.5x55 M96 reloading hummm
October 11, 2011, 05:06:49 PM
So i do come on here once and a while for help and i apprechate and respect everything i learn here.. so here is my Delima..

i have been reloading my 22-250 for about a year now very succfully out of my 700VTR and dads tikka T3 so i decided to try my 6.5..

well when i did research online about mine and my fathers Carl Gustav (1900 and 1904) i read something about large ring and small ring chambering.. took mt gun (1900) to a gun smith and was told its a small ring.. what im worried about is pressures.. i read that M96 rifles were tested to 66,000psi.. thats over 100 years ago lol.  Factory ammo today is reduced back to 55,000 psi.. the gun smith i took it to told me to just be carefule with under loading or over loading the rilfe for pressure but never did tell me what i was safe to do.. just not full loads.. so.. what are your thoughs or any adive you could give please... please note that mine has been cut down to 26" and dads is 22..  i also though of buyin a new tikka or CZ to get away from it all but then again i cannot find anywhere where what pressures i can get out of them.. i would like to reload the 6.5 to its full potential.

Thanks again.. much apprichated.. Josh Ackert

FIREARMS & OPTICS / CZ 550 or Browning X Bolt
December 17, 2010, 09:28:19 AM
Hey all again hope all is well! Its been a while since i have posted a thread. Busy busy!!

Anywho so im off work now and have been looking to retaire my Carl Gustaff 6.5x55 (1900 date stamp) and keep it in good condition for any children I may have in the Future. I have been doing alot of lookin around and have come down to 2 manufatures that i really like and i hear are known for there great accuracy. One is the Browning X Bolt and the Other is the CZ 550..either the Safari or the American. Calibure im lookin at is 30-06. I have found that the CZ comes with a heavier price tag but it also feels better built when i handle them in stores.

I do own a CZ already. A 452 Euro (Lux) in 22 Long Rifle and i love it!! its very accurate and dependable.. So i guess what im asking is what am i againing or loosing from one make to another?

Also i own a Remington 700 VTR in 22-250(approx 1 year old) i have heard that they are haveing a serious bolt issue of the saftey setting the rifle off when dissigaged. Would someone please be able to bring me up to speed on that please. Thanks again!!!

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Remington Model 700 VTR 22-250
March 17, 2010, 08:04:46 PM
Hey all how are thing? Here in AB the weather has been warm making the coyote killin a lil tough and the hids not worth a whole lote..

So i dunno bout where u all are but here in AB finding 22-250 rounds is almost impossible and my problem is that my rifle has turned out to be fussy on what it likes to shoot.. i dont reload right now and am seriously thinking about starting to learn how.  I own a remington Model 700 VTR. I really love the rifle other than the extream noise it makes but other than that is a good rifle. When i first got the rifle i bought cheap Federal Power shok to break in the gun. Once the gun was broke in i decided to buy different brands of ammo. Fedeal Vital Shok(55gr), Remington Accutip(50gr) and winchester supream(50gr). Out of all the best that shot was the remington. out to 300 yards i could hold a good 5 shot group with them around the 2inch mark. But after the 300 yards i couldnt hit a pie plate. i dont understand what is going on. I want to try some Hornady but really dunno what a good Hornady round would be for those long 400 yard shots.. Im guessin a 50 or 55 gr V-max but i cannot get them. Bugger..

Could someone please give me some advise on the 22-250 and that make of rifle and possible successful ammo. i do wanna keep the hides of the coyotes so want a good all round accurate deadly bullet that is capable of reaching out for them long shots. it would be much apprechated and would help me concerably.
                          Thanks again Josh Ackert

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Enough rifle for Elk?
September 03, 2007, 07:52:44 AM

       G-day there.
Well its gettin close to Elk season here in Alberta and i decided to take a drive lookin for some elk heards in the local area. Well i found a nice heard of 15 with about 5 or 6 calfs, but really cought my eye was the big 5x5 bull. What i was wondering is lots have ppl have told my that my 6.5x55 swed is enough gun for the job if i can place the bullit right. It is the largest rifle i own and have no reason to dought it or myself on bullit placement, but if i could get my hands on a 30-06 i think it would be a better choice. Is it worth teh hassle of getting a 30-06 or just using my 6.5. I do only use factor loads 140gr.

Please get back to me on this since this will be the first elk i have harvasted.

                                                                                            Thanks lots

FIREARMS & OPTICS / pics of my swedish m96
February 24, 2007, 09:26:07 AM
hello everyone well i finally got the pics made smaller to fit the page. hope you like, and hope the pics are not that blurry. sorry there is only 3.

My swed  has stamped on it CARL GUSTAF STADS GEVARSFAKTORL 1900. The 1900 I belive is the year it was made but not sure. im also thinking this is a M96 cuase it did have the 29" barrel till dad cut it down to 26". Im also thinking it is worth some value (though NOT FOR SALE) do to every piece is stamped 757 and all numbers match.

The rifle shoots very well with both open sites and with my 3x9x20mm bushnell banner scope. I only shoot factory Federal Power Shok 140gr soft point ammo and amble to hold a 3 shot groop inside a Canadian Loonie at 100yrds. Sorry i do not know the wear of the barrel or rifleing do to the fact of when dad refinished this rifle he tossed the brass plate i belive. When i recived the rifle from dad i had a new front sight mounted on it so i am dead on at 100yrds when the rear sight is positioned at the 300m notch. The scope is a high mount scope so when in the bush i can use my open sights. not only that but when dad had the scope mounts drilled and tapped he had it done so i can take the scope and mounts off and put them back on so the scope sits in the exact same spot. so really i do not have to take the gun to the range and re-aline it.

Well there is not much more i can say about how much i love this beauty of a rifle other then i have shot animals as small as red wing black birds through to coyote, deer, black bear, and moose.

           Tell me what you think.
                                         thanks again Josh

FIREARMS & OPTICS / new gun
February 11, 2007, 08:24:14 AM
Hey Everyone. i havent been on for quit a while do to work.. but here is my situation.

I do buy my ammo and im lookin for a rifle that will take me a coyote and a deer. i do ahve my 6.5x55 swedish mauser for deer and moose and even elk.. i shoot 160gr for moose and elk but what i would like is something smaller for coyote but yet big enough i can take a deer. here in alberta the deer do grow big and the smallest ammo i can use is a 243. so im debating on a 243 or 25-06. is there any calibers in between there that i do not knwo about.that would be a good versatile rifle..  im not lookin at spending much over $300-$500 since im just starting out in life and am getting married next summer.

                    Thanks a Million
                                     Josh

FIREARMS & OPTICS / old 6.5x55 swed VS .270
November 19, 2006, 10:38:45 AM
hey everyone. well i was in an argument with a guy about my old 6.5x55 swedish(carl Gustauf) with a 26"barrel vs his remington 270. his rifle has the 22in barrel and he was claming that he was hitting harder then my 6.5 at 300 yrds both shooting factory remington loads(140gr) but when i look at the stats online i see the 6.5 is harder hitting. am i just confused or is my 6.5 better for longer range inpact.

i have already proven to him that my gun will outshoot his sice i took the center otta a canadian toonie at 100yrds and was holding a groop that i could also cover with a toonie.. for those of u that are not familliar with a toonie it is about 1.25inches in diameter round and has a center that is about the size of a dime.(10cent). i think it was mosty luck to hit it but i did it. i wish i had pics to post it.but i do not have net yet.

so i guess im really asking. is the 6.5 a better all around rifle then the 270? or am i just confused.

                   thanks again

FIREARMS & OPTICS / thoughts on gettin a new rifle
October 25, 2006, 07:37:46 PM
Hello Everyone. I posted a pole not to long ago(30-06 .vs 308) thanks for all the info and i ahve made my decission on a rifle.. it will be a 30-06... but what i would really like to share is why i was thinking about it and why i have decided to hold off on the whole idea for 4 or 5 years.

I shoot a 1900 carl gustaf 6.5x55 swedish mauser. M96. Im from ontario and to be honest alot of ppl shoot them there all year round because we belive they are an excellent versitle round. That is includes coyotes to moose  Well 1 year ago i moved to alberta and brought my rifles along. when ppl asked me what i shoot for a rifle they laughed at me and told me that it is just a little pea shooter. but then again out here everyone bleaves that anything under .30cal is to small. even for coyotes not to many ppl use something under 30-06.

now what i would like to knwo is what is hte point of using a cannon on an animal that really doesnt need something that big.. like i ahve shot 4 moose with my 6.5 and all have fallin within 50 yards of where i shot it. all shots over 200yards as well.  now i move out here and anythign smaller than a 300 win mag is not used for moose.  i think that is just a waist.

i guess the point im getting at is the reason i decided to not get a new rifle is why buy something you dont need when what u ahve is working fine. i mean there is nothign wrong wiht ahveing to many rifles but im only 21 and still trying to make life work so why spend money on something u dont really need when ppl tell you that you do.

sorry for making this such a novel but i thought i woudl just expresse my thought among everyone and was hoping what everyone esle thinks.
   thanks again Josh

FIREARMS & OPTICS / 30-06 or 308
October 19, 2006, 02:39:50 PM
Hello everyone. I have a little problem. i have a choise to buy a BSA rifle that is like new(bolt action top loader) with a tasco scope on it. It is in 30-06 calibur but i do not knwo if BSA make a good rifle or not or to just save my money and buy a browning semi in 30-06.   My other problem is i have been reading about 30-06 and 308 and they both seem to be close to the same load other then the 308 more accurate in factury loads which i will be shooting.

Another problem is if i pass up the chance at this BSA i do nont knwo what make makes a good accurate 308 bolt action.  so if anyone can help me with this it would be much appreciated.   what i really want to know is what calibure is the best all round cartrigde for anything from deer to moose. 30--06 or 308 and which manufacure makes the best rifle in what calibutre.

i have 6.5x55 sweed( carl gustauf) from 1900 date stamped on it and all numbers matching... good rifle but was handed down from my paw and would like not to wair it out. works good on moose and everyting but just down wanna wair it out.

      thanks again Josh

FIREARMS & OPTICS / wincheter model 12 12 ga
October 22, 2004, 04:59:37 PM
hey well i got a wincherter model 12 12 ga.. i really love this shotgun..it shoot excellent. what i was wondering is if i can shoot slugs out of it. it no longer has the full choke that they came with becuase i shoot canadain geese and ducks and i need to shoot steel shot so i had the local gun smith ream it out to modified. ne  was i ahve been told bye my ppl no i cant and other ppl i can. i have done it and it hald an excellent patter wihr rifeld slugs at 50 yards but was i usut lucky not to split the end of the barrel or was it perfactly fine.

More bout the gun. the local gunsmith looked it up and said it was made in 1958 or something. but i only paid 150$ for it and he said i got a bargin ebcuase it still in excellent condtion on the inside like he  said it hardly been shot. and just a lil bit of marks on the casing over the action. i will neber give up that gun for ne thing and i dont think i will find one that handles or shoots as nice.

     Ne ways thanks... Josh

Hey well about 3 years ago when i worked at a barn i noticed a 22 there and i asked the guy what eh wanted for it. he told me i had to cut his lawn. so i did and know im the owner of this rifle.. i did notice it was extrealy long and and was very accurate. the gun is not in that great of condition. it still has a littel sent of the pig smell on it and it was sigle shot where i had to manualy pull the fireing pin back. that piece has fallin off and when i do it the firing pin pulled back it sum times doesnt lock so it jsut rantomly goes off. it has the orriganal peep sights whicch i like but not very used to. ne wats i was wondering what the age of this rifle would be. there is no serial # ne where and i have had the gun completly appart. if i could please get some help it would be good to know.. maybe even the value of this gun and if it is worht to have the local gunsmith fix the lil problems so i can shoot it saftly again.

                               thanks again.. josh
