BIG GAME / Re: 30-30 elk
June 10, 2005, 07:32:10 AM
The 30-30 has and will kill elk but this can be asking for a wounded and or lost animal if you are not careful. Keep your shots at closer range (I would not shoot over 100 yards at an elk with that round) I would also use the 170 grain rounds vs the 150 grain. And above all like already stated watch your shot placement!

If you have access to a 270 or 06 I would take one of those affield before taking a 30-30 but if its what you have just be careful when you squeeze the trigger. Elk are big strong animals and sometimes can take in alot of lead (even with well placed shots).

Good luck and happy hunting!

BIG GAME / Re: Spring bear hunt'in
April 16, 2005, 09:19:36 AM
Well....sorry for the delay in my responce, some family stuff came up so I have not made it out on a bear hunt yet.  It decited to rain and get cooler here now that spring has come so it sounds like its really cooled things down here for bear hunting but they claim its going to be a warmer week this next few days so with any luck I can get out there.

It looks like the State is also trying to bring back hound hunting but I have to admit I have some mixed feelings about this just cause I dont have access to hounds and I now actually see bears with this not currently being allowed?

I will keep you all posted how its going when I can make it out!

BIG GAME / Spring bear hunt'in
March 31, 2005, 08:51:36 AM
Hello All,

Well our spring bear season is opening this weekend here in Oregon and it will be nice to get back out in the woods and get rid of this cabin fever! Anyone else here going to do any spring bear hunting?

Good point Az!

I forgot about the adjustment differances. and I do agree the vari x I and II's are great scopes.
I think the vari x II my family is using has taken a good beating but still holds its zero every shot!

I think most of the quality differances are due to the glass used (coating and such) and exterior finishes. I have had the vari-x II version and the III.  I liked the vari-x II OR VX-II as they are now called, it was hard to beat for a decent hunting scope in fact its now on my baby sisters deer gun and we have had it in the family now for about 16 years and so far no promblems.

I had a 300 Rum and put the 4-14 x 40 vari x III on it and it was a great combo.  With the recoil the 300 Rum dished out I was not worried about the scope handling it. It never gave me any problems. And the extra few power ranges helped out a great deal after shooting past the 100 yard mark, even at 200 yards most of the time I did not need to look through the spotting scope to see where the bullet found its mark on the paper.  I did notice a big differance in brightness with the vari x III when hunting lower light situations. The coatings they use on the III version is also very crisp. I think its well worth the extra $$ to get the little better version.

You can find some pretty good deals at Riflescopes.com and Natchez shooters supply.  If you dont mind bidding and waiting there are some good deals on ebay as well.

Hope this helps some??

Good luck!

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Re: Browning A-bolt
January 15, 2005, 01:16:05 PM
I have had several of them now and the gun I carry the most is the A-bolt syn.model in 300 Win. I really like them because of the feel and their clip design and most of all the location of the safety. They are good quality shooters, I have NO complaints!

Good luck gun shopping!

POST A POLL / Re: Choosing a scope

Seems to me that there are a lot of Leupold models that will fit the bill as you described above.  I would go Leupold and never look back.

My 2 cents.

CLASSIFIEDS / Leupold vari-x III***SOLD***
January 06, 2005, 10:23:33 AM
*****************SOLD********************* getting some cash together to buy a fishing boat so I am selling a Leupold vari-x III 4-14x40 , this was on a Remington Sendero but I sold the gun and could use the cash more than the scope, it is the matte finish model with fine crosshairs and is in exlnt. condition.

I still have the box, this has been sitting in my gun case and I never re-mounted it and I need a boat more these days! (or so I tell myself) no scratches and you can barely see any ring marks.

Thanks!:D
