BOWHUNTING / Re: Traditional Bowhunting
April 19, 2014, 07:50:16 PM
Thanks Jorge,

I've been at it for about 2 years now and getting better. Last year I had no luck with it, nothing ever did come close enough but hopefully this year I will have a chance, and I will surely share the moment!

It's so great to see folks getting youth involved, I've been shooting with my 12 year old nephew and he loves his little recurve we bought him for his birthday.

We have to wait until beginning of May before planting everything. My uncle gave us some sweet potatoes to try in the garden this year, the only other time i planted potatoes was those little red potatoes we usually cook into a stew, or add them when boiling up some crawfish. They did great but I wanna try sweet potatoes.

I also heard that peppers like a pretty acidic soil, a trick I was told by an old farmer was when planting a pepper plant, break the end of a match and put it under the plant. Anybody heard of this?

THE CAMPFIRE / Re: Wood stove

Very nice! We've had the same wood stove for 20 years, the gaskets have all worn out but it's perfect because even when I shut the dampers down all the way, enough airflow gets through the gaskets to keep the fire at a low burn and lets me keep just enough ashes in the bottom to relight it in the morning. I agree that wood heat is the best thing you can do! Save us a TON of money on electricity as our heaters run 24/7 otherwise. The only thing I don't like about it is that the wood heat robs the humidity in the house, so I keep a cast iron pot on top filled with water and a humidifier in my room.

I try to keep the basement (where the stove is) in the upper 70s and low 80s which keeps the upstairs relatively warm, for if you heat it too much the floor trusses will settle too much when it cools back off and you end up with stress cracks in all the joints in your ceiling as well as the joints in your walls. So be sure not to get your house too toasty!

It's amazing how time flies, my only regret was that I wasn't on here  enough. But now that College is done and my life is a little more in  line I am now a little more relaxed and can focus more on enjoying my  time; that and finding a job lol. Dad has taken up hobbies in reloading,  restoring cars and gun collecting so I wanted a good hobby for myself  and so I now am into Trad archery and lead lure/sinker making. I really  enjoy making and using things in my passion for the outdoors, I've  already caught bass using some lures and sinkers i've made, I am now  looking forward to taking my first trad deer with the arrows I made! :indian_chief:

I am sorry to hear that, dad had to  switch to a crossbow because his eyes are terrible and he can't see the  sights anymore. I've been shooting at a club about an hour and a half  away dedicated to traditional archery and I've met some great guys to  help my journey into the realm of trad archery, one guy actually makes  his own bows (self-bows) and instructed me and another fella on how he  does it. Now it's just personal experience, I've got a few hickory  staves cut and they should be seasoned come next year, maybe by fall of  2015 I shall take a game animal with not only a string and arrow I made  but a bow I made as well!

I will certainly share everything with the board!

Congrats! This year was a bust for me. I went all traditional (using longbow) during archery and even muzzle-loading season and then gun season was, needless to say, letting everything go. My brother and I had seen a monster buck earlier in the year and so we were hunting for him. But no luck!

BOWHUNTING / Traditional Bowhunting
February 19, 2014, 04:37:01 PM
Hey everyone, just last year I started getting into the realm of traditional archery. After shooting my compound bow extensively for the last 11 years I decided to try something a little different and more challenging thus went traditional. I am now shooting a 64" Carpathian Traditional Archery (CTA) Redstag Longbow 57# @ 28" draw.

And I've got to say I have not touched my compound since! I started out shooting carbon shafts but now have ventured into the craftsmanship and traditional feel of wooden arrows. Made my second dozen batch a week ago along with a self-made B-50 Flemish Splice string, and am very happy with the results. Now with all this snow I am looking for a great day to shoot them and I am anxious to use them this hunting season.

So who all shoots traditional? and have you had any luck hunting?

BTW: I am on our desktop, I'll have to get onto my laptop in order to post some pictures (I have all my pictures on my laptop)

THE CAMPFIRE / Just Checking In!
August 26, 2008, 04:20:03 AM
Hey everyone! I know it's been a long time since I last post and I apologise for that. But my summer has been kinda busy. I now am back in college for my third semester (started yesterday). I know I missed out on a lot that has been going on, and I will try to check in as much as my schedule will allow.

I would like to thank Daryl and Rockinbar and anyone else who watched over the Junior Outdoorsmen section for me and for Jay for posting some real interesting stories, and keeping the section of the board alive!

I may dissappear from time to time and not post in a while, but believe me when I say I will never forget this wonderful board and the friendly members who post here! I will check in from time to time!

Wishing everyone the best!

God bless

Quote from: Alboy;77059It is not just a joke. I once worked for a fencing company that was persuaded that one beer at lunch could not hurt.

Of course the owner was thinking 12 oz and the yoyo's started buying quarts or the biggest single container they could. Thus the deal got cut off.

I was a drinker myself then but beer, even one, was stupid in my book while working in 100-110 degree sun, no trees (highway headlight barrier fence) a fella needs hidration not alcohol.

Indeed, my sister and brother in law work for a pharmaceutical processing company (known as PRA) in Charlottesville, and in their lunch break they are allowed one beer, and they do just like you said alboy, buy the biggest bottle they can find.

Sounds like a job for me when I get older lol!

Hey thanks Alboy! it's been a pleasure being with the forum and being around all of yall nice folks!

College is going well! Currently my second semester is coming to a close and I am going to continue in the fall (have a summer break). I've got two more semesters to go before I have to transfer to a four year college.

I am planning on getting my Associates degree at my community college (where I am now) and then transfering to University Of Virginia about 40 minutes from my home (so I will be commuting back and forth probably). There I will probably get into computer tech. and graduate with a Bachelor's degree and go into Computer Programming or something of the like as a career.

But who knows, I may change my mind.

God bless all!

i read this story online...I am kind of questioning if it is real or not. It might be true, but then again it might be written by some individual who is thirsty for attention.

Reguardless it is a bad idea to mess with wild animals, even if your plan is to tame or help them.
