Years ago I put this little rascal together in .40 (I think) caliber.  All I can think for a barrel this slim is the .40-50 Straight and the .40-60 Maynard.  Either way it would be economical, fun to shoot and plenty for taking down Deer & Elk.

"Formed from .303 British and .30-40 Krag" is a big deal to me. Seems like a great cartridge for a Martini-Henry or Martini-Enfield.
