I realize this may require a log-in, but it's free and well worth it.  This link was on the home page today at

A South African WWII soldier, later POW, kept a journal which was recently returned to the family. The web pages include a .pdf of the journal, photos, interactive map of his (and the journal's) travels, and the journal includes poems and some detailed drawings by another soldier.

*OH!...AND... contrary to popular propaganda you do *NOT* need anything by Adobe for .pdf files.  one option for a simple reader -- which does not tie up my computer memory or run tell any company just what I am reading with it -- is ghostview or "gsview" (free) at

Read the story.  Wonderful how history can unite.  How will we know our future if we do not acknowledge the past.  Unfortunately I do not know the people in the story.  The South African greek community is large.  My own grandfather did also serve in the war (as an eye surgeon in London).  My great-grandfather was a prisoner of war (the Anglo-Boer War) and was held on St.Helena.  I also fought in the border war and was stationed on the Mozambiquan border.  Never fired a single shot at the enemy, ironic is it not.  Let's hope my sons will only know peace.
