RELOADING / Re: .338 MAI and .338x284 Win

I have not been on here in some time, but have always wondered why something like this isn't more popular. Basically a modern 318 WR that you can put easily into a military Mauser. I don't think many elk or black bear would like it at all.

Call it what you will, I'd enjoy seeing it come to reality.

Wow,
It has been over 2 years since I checked in here and I see a lot of familiar names. Not a lot of guns where the Navy has me, but I'm coming home and figured I'd say hi. Funny, a co-worker and I have been having a conversation in the same vein as this only about cars.

I currently have a Nikon Pro-Staff that I am quite happy with. However, here in  a couple years the Navy will be done with me and I can get a real job. That job will pay enough that I can enjoy some finer things and the first will be a custom controlled feed mid power mid bore rifle with a top shelf scope. I will by this for the pure enjoyment of it, if the money was not available I'm certain my Nikon would be all I ever need.

Great topic.

BLACKPOWDER/MUZZLELOADERS / Re: My first blackpowder

If your up for something different, I just finished two 1800's books on hunting in Africa and the Dutch 10 bore was the go to gun for everything up to dangerous game. I know that you have a smooth bore, but good tight slugs should be good for 50-70 yards.

I really like the 41JDJ, but that would require a bolt mod. A wildcat 45-70 necked down to 41 would be interesting. Especially if you have a 41Mag revlver floating around.

I have a Nikon 4x on my Savage 110 30-06. It is bright enough for hunting the dark winter rain forests in Washington and it's never hinted at fogging or leaking.

The new Redfields are made by Leupold and reviews are quite positive. If they had a fixed power, I'd own it.

If I ever make it up to Wasilla, I'll buy you a beer and we can swap lies about who's like sucked more in the Navy.

Na

No bother at all. Pardon accepted but not needed. I just wish I was here to chime in while everyone was talking about the Martini.

RELOADING / Re: Lead "Smelting"
April 10, 2010, 12:46:55 PM
Quote from: Hunterbug;105431I have all the stuff to do it, I just haven't tried it yet. I've got some lead, a pot, a dipper and a double mold for a 38/357. I might have to drag myself out next weekend and make some up. Then you gotta lube them too.

Unless your lead is a clean commercial alloy. You need to add flux to your list. I am not a genius when it comes to casting, I just cast to shoot cheap and to hunt with the bullets I want, but you cannot get clean led from dirty lead without some kind of flux. I typically use whatever commercial flux is the cheapest and available because a little goes a long way ( beginners almost always use to much and make a smoky splattery mess in the process.)

Paul

Funny, lot's of old sailors say that. I'm still enamored, and enjoy the privilege of serving my country. I would also PAY to go underwater and stand DOOW.

I must admit though, the years are sneaking up on me. It is getting harder and harder to tolerate someone telling me how to do my job when they weren't even born when I started doing it.

Well
Leave it to you all to have a great conversation on one of my topics while I'm underwater and can't enjoy it!

Brithunter, that is a wonderful 12/15.

If you are thinking of rechambering that rifle, the above data is correct. Maybe a little more speed with some of the newer powders.

If you are looking at the chamber in a strong single-shot like a TC or Handi rifle, you can safely bump up the pressure and do a good bit more than that.

For the Marlin, the new safe pointy bullets would really turn the rifle with the AI chamber into a different beast. I would think (although I don't have the ballistics program handy,) you could expect 300 yards or a bit more out of it.

$452.00

Paul, I don't have the heart to tell you what a Chief Bubble Head makes today. I don't know if you were living in the barracks or out in town, but it is quite different today.

I have never owned a 10/22. I have shot several, but never owned one. I hunt and paper punch with old single shot boys rifles (my favorite is a Target Master from Granddad. Thing shoots like a house afire.) They are what my kids are learning with also.  When you miss and the bunny hops away because you didn't kill it, you learn not to miss.
