Not only are nature's creations better looking than man made there is one important point that just about never gets brought up about plastic stocked rifles when out hunting if a branch hits a wood stock it makes a natural sound that game have heard before when a branch hits plastic it makes an unnatural sound and spooks game. Nice job on the stock. Nice piece of lumber.

SMALL GAME / Re: first squirrel of the new season
May 22, 2017, 09:46:41 PM
Ground squirrel hunting or perhaps shooting is a better term it was not a hunt today. I dropped a boom wheel into a badger hole and tore it off the weed sprayer so I was a bit upset at the time and money that this cost me so I started a different way of shooting them today. Had a flat deck trailer hooked on the the  dodge with a 1800 gallon water tank on it and pulled up beside a squirrel colony's  holes and stuck the hose in a hole and fired up the two inch banjo pump. Well the shooting is fast and furious. The count ended up at four colony's flooded out and sixty dead ground squirrels. I am going to haul a bunch more water  I really need to get them under control. The last five years I don't think I would be telling stories if I said the ground squirrels had cost me at least twenty thousand dollars in damage and lost crop. Two of us shooting as fast as we could work the bolt when the water level got high enough.

BIG GAME / Re: How far would you shoot?
May 22, 2017, 09:31:02 PM
The flat parairie ground around me you shoot long distance or you don't shoot. No problem with five hundred yard shot at big game I would be uncomfortable with more than that, in the mountains and hills three hundred would seem like enough. Varmint shooting as far as you can see them. I have shot many coyotes at really long distance they are predators that eat the small ruminants on the farm. One summer I shot seventy five coyotes within a half a mile of a local hutteritte colony's sheep flock I eliminated there predator loss problem in less than a  month.

SMALL GAME / Savage 17hm2 vs Gophers and badger
May 09, 2017, 05:28:16 PM
Well it tried out the savage 17hm2 shot a pair of gophers one at around thirty yards the other out just past one hundred yards. After the long shot a badger stuck his head out of a hole about fifteen feet away. I think I shot him in the head but perhaps on second reflection I may have hit him lower in the wind pipe. He went down the hole I took a crow bar out of the tractor and it is about three feet long the hole went farther than that. I could hear him in the hole sounds like gruggling I think he bled out in his lungs. I started to dig him out but did not have a shovel he was way down there. I am sure he expired as the noise quit. Moral of the story use a center fire. Always the problem when I only take one gun it always should be a big one.

THE NEED FOR SPEED / Moto Guzzi
April 11, 2017, 03:56:43 AM
I purchased a Moto Guzzi Centauro the other day. These were never imported into Canada. The one I got was brought in from the USA. Arkansas to be exact. I have always loved the look of these bikes I must be strange as not many were sold worldwide around 1700 total in a four year run.  A transverse mounted vee twin. 992 CC's and  four valve heads for a 95hp rating. I have not brought it home yet. Next week. Needs fork seals done but other than that looks like it's good to go. I hope I am not just trying to relive my youth! Here's a link to a picture of one off the web.http://moto.zombdrive.com/image-model/5389-moto-guzzi-centauro-4.jpg.html
