A mate from work, who I only recently found out was also a hunter, arranged a trip to get away on our shifts off and get out hunting. I also arranged for my regular hunting partner to come along as we have been hunting together for over 20 years.

The country we hunted in was breath taking, with the creek lines having small pools and eddies and sometimes massive rock formations and waterfalls.

My cousin and I hunt pretty hard and soon got into some fair sized goats. Goats are a problem and can completely wreck the bushland in no time.
In Australia getting a goat with a horn spread over 40" is the "holy grail"
I got a couple over 40" and one just under 40".

I took my newly rebarreled Savage 99 in .308 along. It's a great quick handling rifle well suited to fast shot on goats. My load was a 130gn ADI HP with 45 gns of AR 2206H.
This goat went over 40". It took a carefull stalk to get him.

The next day I took my Sako .223 out after some foxes and wouldn't you know it but we ran into pigs instead!!

We shot a couple of smaller pigs going uphill at a range of 300 metres, this was confirmed with the GPS!
This was the biggest pig of the trip, a sow taken at a range of 180 metres. My load for the .223 was a 55gn Nosler BT with 24.5gns of AR 2206.

On the second last day we decided to hit a long gully locally known as "Syd James"
I was after foxes again so I took my Sako along again.
I got 5 foxes in total ranging from 20 metres to 150 metres.

The last one was a screamer of a shot taken off hand at about 80 metres with the fox running off down hill.

In all a great time was had by all. The property owner asked us back and we are very willing to take him up on the offer!

Very Cool! Thanks for the pictures.

I'm interested the ADI 130 HP. How did it perform on the goats?

Thanks guys,

The ADI 130gn HP was designed by Australian Defence Industries for the National Parks and Wildlife Service as a goat culling projectile.
They are similar to the Speer 130gn HP but were made to feed through M14 and SLR / FN FAL semi auto rifles used in culling operations.

I bought about 500 of them years ago and have used them on pigs, goats, foxes, roos, rabbits, cats, just about everything you could think of, despite "experts" telling me that they will blow up on the skin of a pig.
Funny that "experts" said that because I have never had a problem with them dropping any animal, and I had never heard of these "experts" ever using this projectile!

I have finally run out and it doesn't look like I will be able to get any more due to the war. I don't even have one left to post a pic!

I will have to get some Speers which I think will be just as good.

The scope is an old Nikko Sterling 1.5-4.5x20. It was the only spare scope I had on hand before the trip. It will hopefully be replaced by a Leupold 2-7x32 in the near future.
The butt pad is slip-on Limbsaver recoil pad. I put it on simply to extend to lenght of pull, which I found a touch too short for my liking.
All up the outfit works a treat!!
I can't understand why 99's arn't more popular in Australia or why Savage stopped making them.

Actually, my daughter says my brother looks more like me than I do! Ah, the logic of a 3 year old!!
