WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND? / Re: Who got you started?
August 20, 2005, 07:27:03 AM
I have to give some credit to my Dad and Mom.  My Dad isnt what you would call a hunter, he used to go duck hunting with his grandfather when he was a young teen, but kinda got out of it.  Well I've always had a thing for firearms and fishing, and then that developed in to hunting.  My dad has always had a firearm, well up untill i was 12 it was just a .22 Ruger pistol, and 2 .22 rifles, a lever action winchester, and a model 62, the hammerless slide action.

My parents gave me  a BB gun, then I got a Bow, a really nice Hoyt youth bow, and I shot that but never went hunting.  Then I finally got my first firearm, a New England 12 gauge single shot shotgun.  After getting that I also went on my first pheasant hunt, a youth hunt that is at a local wildlife area that the Oregon Dept Fish and Wildlife has each year.  Well I didnt shoot anything, saw only one bird, it was just me and my mom, trying to walk up some pheasants.  She wasnt hunting just the Adult that had to be with me.  My parents were divorced by that time.

Then I went the next year with my Dad, and my younger brother too, and I shot two that year but I also got a new shot gun the year before a Mossburg 500.  So even though my parents didnt hunt they still suppored me and gave me the opportunites to go even if they were limited.  I got my first Bird dog at 16, a German Short Hair Pointer, for my birthday, which I trained him my self.  He would point Pheasants all day by the unmowed field by my house. He wasnt perfect, but I got him steady enought I could go flush the bird.  Never could get him to really fetch very well, had to force it upon him.  (still have him hes with my dad at the moment while im stationed at fort bragg).  I trained him for about a year, till one 4th of July, thats when he was ruined, by fireworks, They launch the big style display fire works by our house, there close about a 100 meters away, well the loud bangs and explosions, made him gun shy.  Ive worked with him on it and hes made a little progress, but never have hunted him and now hes about 9 years old, and im 24, I havent seen him in almost 3 years and miss him.  I just havent been home much after getting married and all the deyployments. Im looking foward to getting him back once I start Recuiting in Texas though, that way I can have my dog back.

Anyhow, I was fortunate enough to have parents and grandparents that were supportive of my wanting to hunt, and helped me out.  Also my grandma was and old south dakota farm girl who, loved pheasants so, I mostly birdhunt, but I got in to big game when I turned 18.

BOWHUNTING / Re: Just bought my new Bow
August 20, 2005, 07:02:26 AM
Those Martins are nice bows, to bad nobody sold em in my area, cause I wanted to either get a Martin or BowTech, I ended up with a Bow Tech, a 2004 model that I bought in 05 that made it about the price of a mid level bow so I was happy.  Now the Army decided I dont need to hunt the fall, and have me in school, and moving after im done.  I do think Texas as a later season for deer though so maybe I will luck out.

Congradulations on and awsome bow.

RELOADING / Re: Best Ammo for Short Barreled 45 ACP?
August 20, 2005, 06:58:29 AM
The 230 grain FMJ or hard ball, usally works the best out of a 5" barrel.  I know some people have  a preference for heavier bullet, cause I do too, to a point.  I perfer 230 grain loads in a JHP for my .45 defense load, only because if they expand great if not, well they will peform like the ball ammo.   I suggest you might want to try the 185 grain +p loads to see if you can get a little more speed out of em, say to the 900 fps range, that would work great.  I would put in in around the same area as the .40 S&W but with a larger frontal area.

If you have a cronograph, you can shoot some different loads, to see if there is one that will offer you the bullet weight and speed that you want.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Re: Ruger Single Six question

I would do what Barry suggested above, but I would also try a couple different brands of .22lr through it to see if maybe you got a jacked up batch of .22lr, which does happend, thats causeing the cases to split.  You could have a jacked up cyinder though.

I like my CETME, you need to watch out for head space problems and canted sights, and a couple other things. Try googliing CETME RIFLES, there is  a website that has some good info on em and especially buying one.  They make a couple different recivers there was a cast stainless steel, and a cast reciver, and the stamped one.  I have a stamped CETME and that thing is a bumpfireing maching.  Also you can get a good deal on mags at cheaper than dirt, I got mine for under $3.00 yes that cheap.  They used to be expensive im talking like $65 or more dollars just untill maybe a year or two ago.  Stay away from the Indain made 7.62x51 its junk.  I like the santa barabra, it was spanish made but i cant find it anymore, Australian is good.  Just make sure you get a rifle that checks out.  I really like mine.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Looking for 6.55x55 SE rifles
August 14, 2005, 05:56:53 PM
Okay im looking for a new hunting rifle, something I can use for anything in the lower 48, so im going to get a 6.55x55 SE and get in to handloading.  So anyhow , I know just about everyone makes a rifle chambered for it.  Execpt for Remington and Savage.  So Im  really leaning towards, the CZ 550, or the Howa, but also Charles Daily makes one, and so does Sako and Tikka, and as well as Ruger, and Winchester. I've heard somewere were i cant recall that the Winchester bolt face, isn't the same as the european made Bolt faces on the CZ, Tikka, or Sako. Its supposed to be that the winchester bolt face is based on the 06 case head and the european ones on the 6.55x55 case head, as anyone else heard this or know anything about it?

MILITARY HEADQUARTERS / Re: Basics vs. Bootcamp
August 14, 2005, 05:25:52 PM
Rohann, if you want to at least enlist in the US Army, you need to get you INS I-551 card, once you have that you can enlist in the US Army, you do have to have at least be a high school graduate, and get the qualifing score on the ASVAB, the test to see were you would work best for the military. If you have any questions let me know, im currently in the United States Army Recuiting school.

Oh I feel that the Armys Infantry Basic Training, is on par with the Marines Boot Camp.  I know the Marines came to Fort Benning to check out the Obsticle Course we ran to get ideas for theres.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Re: 16 GA. Over & under
August 14, 2005, 04:35:05 PM
Depends on how much you want to spend, check out bill hanus bird guns, this guy specializes in 16 guages, and has some over and unders.  People like BSA and AYA, should make some 16 guages as well.  I dont know if anyone like the Remington line of Spartan makes a 16 gauge or not.  I know that Remington made an 870 in a 16 gauge a couple years ago, wish I would would have bought one.

THE WELCOME WAGON! / Just Introducing my self
August 14, 2005, 04:30:18 PM
Just introducing myself.  My name is Aron, im currently stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC and making a move sometime soon to either Washington, or Texas, depending on were the Recuiting command wants me to go.
Anyhow, I both hunt with bow, and rifle, and upland and waterfowl.  I dont shoot much game but I really enjoy being out there and enjoying the chase and the outdoors.
