Would love to own one, but no need for it at this time.  Can't decide if I will be searching out wby dangerous game rifle in this caliber or the 460, leaning toward the 460 at this point, but we'll see.  Have a few years before I can afford to take the treck to Africa seeing as how i am a college student at this time.

I recieved the e-mail about that bear too, thanks for showing us the true story gitano, was interestring to see how the story had changed over time.  Sounds like you had an interesting hunt for your bear a few years back, what happened to make you shy away from sub .323's.  The ft. lbs. on the 7x300 wby couldn't have been any less than the    .338 win?  Sounds like an interesting story, would love to hear it.
As for the .500 that spawned this discussion, if I were a lever action man, it would most likely excite me, but I am not so all I can say about it is sounds fun.

As much as I love weatherby, I do realize that they are not for everyone and the added power is unneeded in most situations. Periscope depth, your friend may need help understanding that the gun may be out of his comfort zone. If he has never been hunting, my guess (which may be incorrect) is that he has not done much shooting. Maybe let him shoot a smaller gun like a 223 or something to get him comfortable with shooting and work his way up.
That being said, I love the feel of Weatherby's recoil, they feel different and more comfortable to me, don't really know how to explain it. I had a 300 RUM in rem (what is now the XCR) and it kicked rediculiously and the 300 WBY mag is a very similar cartridge and is not even close to being as uncomfortable to shoot in a weatherby accumark.
The 30-378 doesn't kick at all with the accubrake, so I am sure that the 460 with an acubrake would not be too much more than a 458. I do think that something like walkers game ear would be a must though.

Brithunter,
? for ya. You were talking about how the 460's velocity is too high at 2600-2700 fps w/ a 450-500 gr bullet, but the 375 h+h shoots from 2530-2700 fps with 260-300 gr bullets. It is a tried and true African cartridge, so just wondering why the difference with this caliber, since they have similar velocities?  Or is this only relevent to larger calibers?

Great story periscope.  God a laugh out of me!  As for the 460, I would love to own one and I expect I will when I "need" it.  Don't think the Africa trip will take place until at least a few years after college gets done, which is this coming spring.

Weatherby man,
glad to see you here, I thought I was the only weatherby lover in the world after hearing a lot of guys on the forum crap on them(which is fine, like hearing others' opinions, just sayin) Huge fan of weatherby here and have a few to start the collection but hard to pay for on a student's salerie.  Hope your having fun with the suped up loads just don't get dead.

Gitano, thanks for the link, by that "chart" it would be possible for the 340 to do 3350 out of a 44'' barrel considering that the increase in velocityt was on average about 20-30fps/inch, which means an increase of a minimum of a 360fps increase, which would bring it awfully close to 3350, and that is being conservative.  I realize it is not practicle, just curious about the results.
Still would like to know how the 338-378 stacks up to this cartridge as far as cartridge size goes or what this cartridge shoots a 250 gr bullet out of a 26in barrel at.

That would be an increase of almost 400fps (340WBY factory loads in 250gr go about 2960fps, not 2850), I am no expert of the affects of barrel length on velocity, but that does seem extreme.
What difference would the additional 18 inches make?  I have heard/read that each inch should change the velocity about 40-50fps, but that cant go on for ever.
What about the 338-378, would it match up?
And what are the normal powder volumes for the 340 and 338-378?
Just want to see how these match up?

BIG GAME / 2007 bear bait pics
August 15, 2007, 06:29:40 AM
Hello everyone,
I know I havn't been around much, new job, new wife, trying to figure out land and house issues andsome other fun stuff. Hope everyone has been well.
Here is what I have been up to as far as hunting goes.
Have a mamma + 4 cubs coming as well as a few young bears. THe pics are mostly of the mother and cubs as I think they are the most fun to see. THere are a couple pics of other bears as well.
Hope you all enjoy and hopefully I will be around a little more!

And for all those concerned, No I will not shoot the mother or the cubs. I will be bringing my digital camera with me to hopefully get some video clips of them. David (lt89) may also be coming to get a video of a shot if our schedules work out and the bears cooperate.

HUNTER'S GEAR REVIEW / Re: Gun Safes
July 08, 2007, 10:10:58 PM
I have a John Deere gun safe and it is very nice, heavy, fire rated, and needs a key and a combination to open it.  Not sure if they make one to fit 20+ rifles + 10 handguns, but worth taking a look at and they are not rediculiously expensive.  Im sure they will have info for you at a local John Deere dealer.

all year ound here as well, but the mosquitos and flies are way too thick to be in the woods for any amount of time and enjoy yourself.  but i do enjoy to go after the little buggers, only reds here though, of any number anyway.  the grays all live in town.
