I have never fired any of those Remington Accelerator offerings but I do remember hearing of at least two examples of there misuse. The worst of those was a couple of guys using them for cross canyon elk shooting in NE Oregon. They would just set up and wait for the elk to cross the opposite hill side and fire for effect. My dad told me they did kill a couple of bulls but I hate to think of how many may have been wounded.  :(

It's a fine cartridge in the TC Contender also.  I haven't used it on any big game yet but it is a pop can killer out to 250 yrds.

Glad to see you back PROMAN! I have to agree with sticking with the 30 cal or bigger on this case. Take any animals with your Bird this season? Finally had a chance to streach the legs on mine this fall.

That's an interesting cartridge and set up. Look at the 140-142 class bullets if you really want to streach it out. The 107's should shoot about as flat as anything to the 500yrd mark, but I'm sure you know the BC story. Also be aware of how your bullet will perform on target. I was using 150 Matchkings for varmit bullets out of my Warbird. At 3670fps it would flat unravel a jackrabbit at <100 yrds.
John Lazzeroni keeps pushing light tough bullets faster and faster. His newest 30 cal (Battlestar) is running 150's over 4000fps. I guess if you are after maximum point blank hunting it's the way to go. But with the diminishing returns I'll stay where I'm at.
My personal feeling is 30cal as a minimum for long range on elk but the 6.5STW should make a good deer rifle.

Good luck with your new toy.

Daniel,

Looking at Lilja's chart it would be a #6 contour.  The #7 would be a bit heavier.  What twist rate are you going with?

Well lets try it again.....

LeRoy,

Here's a pic of the rifle and another bull. This was before I went to the 6.5-20 Leupold in Burris Signature rings. It is wearing a Leupold 4.5-14 in this photo.

Hope this is large enough to see what you want.

M1G,
Thanks for the kind words.  That happens to be on the dry side of Oregon.

Daniel,
Honestly that's what I recommend to everyone that approaches me about doing a rifle like mine. Once you start shooting high B.C. bullets, and dialing in your drop, a 100-150 fps really doesn't make much difference. From a $$$ stand point the 300 Ultra Mag is the way to go. You can always add a couple of inches of tube. Heck I would shoot an Ultra but I was shooting this thing before Remington had that twinkle in their eye.:)

Daniel,

I didn't do the work but here's what I have.  The bolt face is enlarged to .590".  That makes it impossible to use a Remington style extractor so A Sako type extractor has been installed.  As far as how the bolt face is enlarged????  Yes it is a repeater 2+1.  I believe the feed rails are untouched as my rifle was fitted with an aftermarket(?) mag box that makes it feed like it's single stacked or a clip instead of the staggered factory Rem. style.  If you are genuinely interested in building one I could get you more details from my buddy/gunsmith.  But he lives in another state and it might take awhile.

Well I guess I'll chime in since I shoot one and I use part of the name as my "handle".

I have been shooting my Warbird for about 8 years. It's a Remington 700 with a 27" Lilja stainless fluted match grade barrel (.750" at the muzzle), McMillan HTG stock, a touch of lead shot and accraglas in the butt for balance, currently a Leupold 6.5-20 with target turrets, and a total weight of 10.5 lbs. I've used this rifle for shooting running jacks in the sage, ground squirrels, sage rats, spot and stalk black bears, mulie bucks, roosevelt elk, rocky mtn elk, and various other stuff. It's a great cartridge and I love the performance of it and my rifle. I usually don't talk about long range shots on game, but Jay did ask.

Most of my practice is done between 300 yrds and 1000+ yrds, in the field, and using realistic hunting situations. This is not all flat ground benchrest shooting in fair weather. With that said I also do not take shots at game that I do not believe I can make. If the conditions aren't within my abilities I don't shoot.

I took this 5X6 at 855 yrds. The first shot broke his spine the second took out both lungs. This bull was taken with 180 gr Nosler Accubonds. Here's another pic. I took the shot from the far hillside above the large rock in the upper left foregound.

Lots of performance, but is it for everyone? No. It's expensive, heavy, recoils pretty good, and most folks can't shoot well enough to use or need the extra. Or they just chose to hunt in a different manner.  And thats alright too.:)

I have never owned a Roberts but I have been wanting to have one put together.  I had been thinking if I could ever find a Ruger #3 it would be a great starting point.  22-24" tapered octagon barrel, case hardened finish on the action, real nice walnut, and chambered for the AI version.  Someday.

THE CAMPFIRE / Re: Oregon Elk Camp & news FYI

I just returned home from the convention.  Lots of outfitters, state wildlife departments, some great elk mounts, seminars, world elk calling championship.  Whew what a day.

RELOADING / Re: Ballistics Cards?
February 23, 2005, 06:25:50 PM
I make mine by actually shooting and recording the data.  Then I'll run it against the computer ballistic program to check for anything that doesn't look right.  If I can't get the two to match pretty closely I'll reshoot the distances in question till I figure out where the error is.  You may need to play with the "G" factor and BC #s to get the trajectory to overlay your test fire data.  Here's a on-line ballistic calculator.  http://www.eskimo.com/~jbm/

Once you have what you want, you can print, laminate, tape to your stock, or what ever you want.

Hope this helps.

BIG GAME / Re: Would you take this shot...
February 16, 2005, 07:11:24 PM
My guess is that if he doesn't spook, that large branch or tree trunk behind him will turn him and give me the broadside shot.  As the shot is right now, I would have to be there to make that call.
