THE HISTORY BUFFS CORNER / Vimy ridge
April 09, 2016, 06:41:10 PM
Today is the 99 th anniversary of the four Canadian division s that made up the Canadian corps storming of vimy. It was the high ground for miles around and both the British and French armies tried to dislodge the German army several times. This was the making of the country a defining moment in Canadian history. Much the same as the Anzac's at Gallipoli. The Canadian army was on the crest of the ridge watching the Germany army run away on the down slopes. After the trenches were dug this is the first time the allies saw open ground in front of them. Typical of ww1 transport was so bad there was no way to really take advantage of the broken German lines. There was one high point called the pimple that took a few more days to over run but the corps prevailed. There were two tactics that allowed the victory. One was the development of the creeping barrage. The second was the truely Interesting one evey man in the army was told the plan and the objectives so if and when the leaders got killed the men knew what to do as well they knew where the others beside them were to be and could help out with flanking fire. One other thing that was used extensively was tunnelling both under groung bombs and to bring men uo to the front behind the German front lines. My great uncle I was named after fought at vimy in the loyal Edmonton regiment. I will drive by his grave before I go home tonight. RIP. He made it through that battle and everyone up until that point he was one of the first Canadians in France. He got wounded in the fall of 17 at the third battle of Ypres. That ended ww1 for him when ww2 broke out he wanted to go back but they thought he was not in good enough shape and he served in the veterans guard. The veterans guard guarded POWs amoung other things and that was his second war job guarding the POWs at the camp in Lethbridge. The POW camp had twice as many POWs as there were people in Lethbridge there were around twenty thousand POWs there. My grandfather and great uncle drew straws to see which one of them was going to stay home and farm a d which one was going overseas.

SMALL GAME / My Henry 17 hmr
April 07, 2016, 08:00:23 AM
I got it back in just under a month. I paid shipping one way. The report says over charged shell. I have not shot it yet but I have mounted the scope back on it. They say the test fired in twenty times. They used the wrong size screwdriver on the action cover!

SMALL GAME / Richardson ground squirels. 2016
April 02, 2016, 06:27:11 PM
I have shot over three hundred of the little buggers this spring so far I am thinking that I have got them thinned down a bunch not seeing many now. Anyhow the average weaned litter size is six so if half were females and likely more were because females have twice the life span. I have effectively killed 1200.

HUNTER'S GEAR REVIEW / Ponsness warren
March 26, 2016, 09:39:44 PM
Went to the Calgary gun show today. Extremely dead in there today. It's the biggest gun show in Canada. To me you could see the low oil prices and what it has done to my Alberta home. Everyone that we asked said it was the slowest lowest sales Calgary show they had ever attended. Anyhow found a guy that had a pair of ponsness warren 375 loaders there I bought one of them it was in 12 guage which I already have one but I will get a 28 guage tooling kit for it. I paid less that the price of a ring to quickly change guages for a 375. The shot gun loading bench will look kind of neat now.lol.  I need to spend some time in my loading room both to load and setup a few things and organise a bunch of stuff in there. I have got four of them for just a tad bit more than one new one. I like the idea of them all working the same way. The loading procedure is the same less to think about that way. I find them quite easy to make a good looking crimp with. Other things there that were of interest I saw a side by side 16 guage muzzle loading shotgun. There was a fair over under in 28 guage that was nice good price but more than I had to spend.  There was a 218 Ackley improved bee in a Bruno bolt gun I liked that gun the guy wanted 1200 for it I felt that was way to much. There were a number of sour ( lol cannot remember how to spell it) rifles there including on colt version. There were about dozen Holland and Holland double rifles a couple of Wesley Richards double rifles. The custom rifle maker out of cranbrook British Columbia Hagn had a table. Oh my true beauty. Single shot falling blocks starting at 14 000 up to 45 000 perhaps the best fit and finish I have ever laid eyes on. He has a web site that some of you may want to look at. Then the totally useless rifle I really wanted to buy. I got his card just in case. A fellow there had a custom 505 Gibbs built on a Bruno zzk602 action with a beautiful stock. Which was interesting in some ways it looked like it was built out of zebra wood but I don't think that would be meet strong enough for a 505. It came with about 50 pieces of brass. He wanted 2500 for it. It was well done muzzle heavy which I like a large but pad lots of area to spread the recoil on your shoulder over. A barrel band for the front sling. The pistol grip was played back well setup so in recoil it would not bite your finger. I would guess about twelve plus pounds. Three cross bolts for recoil through the stock one behind the back action bolt another behind the recoil lug and a third one down the barrel a bit I am guessing a second recoil lug. Folding leaf rear sights. Really nice wood to metal fit really well polished metal work with a perfect bluing job. I want that gun bad! I will think it over I would never need but I always wanted a stopping rifle. Then a man can dream about an African safari. Even if some day I could afford to go there the only one of the big five that I would be interested in hunting would be a buff. The safari that would most interest me would be the tiny ten. The rabbit sized deer hunt would be neat. Speaking of rabbits that perhaps maybe the true use for a 505 Gibbs. I am thinking the killer rabbit you know the one where the bones of a thousand men lay strewn at the entrance to its lair! That truely is a funny movie. Well that was my day at the Calgary gun show.

HUNTER'S GEAR REVIEW / Savage 93r17bvss
March 13, 2016, 05:26:21 AM
My Henry got sent back to them so ground squirrel season is on. Considering that I have my stock pile of ammo for a 17 hmr I thought I would look for a cheap hmr chambered rifle to use till the other oneade it back. So it just happened that a fellow had been in to the local gun store and traded his savage off because he did not want to pay for ammo at the current prices. 22 dollars a box here. Most 22 LR ammo is at seven plus here this year. So the price was right on the rifle a few marks on the metal. Stock is perfect. Any ideas on removing marks on stainless? First stainless rifle I have owned. It has a cheapy scope mounted it is a three to nine scorpion. I took the rifle out yesterday and shot at a few gophers and roughly adjusted the scope in the field.windage was 3/4 of a turn right and elevation was a 1/4 turn up. I shot a dozen gophers after that so kind a fun hour yesterday afternoon. So I have to shoot it at paper and get it sighted in a bit better but it was shooting minute of gopher yesterday. I will post pictures of the gun and targets shortly. The wind is howling this morning so unless it calms down no shooting for groups today. One thing I noticed about using the scorpion scope was when the sun was above me seemed to to bad. My head has to be placed about perfect to see the full circle through the scope. When I went back as the sun was getting lower in the sky the aborations on the edges got terrible a third on the edge was about bad enough that nothing could be made out in that area of the sight picture. The field of view is small in comparison to either the Leopold or the vortex rimfire scopes I have. That being said this one was good enough when the sun was over head but almost useless when the sun was low in the sky. The rifle seems to be alright not sure if it will shoot as well as the Henry. The Henry was one of the few rifles I have owned that was special as far as accurate shooting goes hard to believe that a lever gun could be but it was. I am hoping they fix my Henry not replace it I can not see another one being as accurate. The savage points fairly well and seems balanced quite good to. I want to take the stock off of it and adjust the trigger see if it can be smoothed out at bit as well. The trigger seams a bit heavy with a lot of over travel but no take up. It will be interesting to see if the gun holds its point of impact. After it need such a large adjustment of the scope I wonder if that is the true reason it was traded. I guess the first look at the bedding is where to start looking. I will do a follow up.

FIREARMS & OPTICS / 17 hmr henry
March 01, 2016, 12:30:28 PM
I was out shooting ground squirrel s any how I shot at one the gun was extremely load I felt the lever open in my hand and I got a bunch of stuff stuck in my face. The case head fell out of the action and the case is stuck in the chamber. The lever will not close now. Any ideas? Me? The gun? The ammo? I started with a brand new box of shells so no way I got a 22 mag in there I don't think it would chamber or for that matter even drop in the mag tube. The gun was bought new on fathers day last year do a little under a year old around two thousand rounds through it. The ammo was CCI.

RELOADING / new ten gauge loader
February 28, 2016, 06:56:44 AM
I won my bid on eBay for a ponsness warren mag-o-matic model 10. As far as I can tell is just a 375 for ten gauge. The loader got a bit higher than I wanted to pay but unfortunately I always end up paying a bit more than I think I should. The ugly part was the shipping I had not realized how much the post office was charging for packages these days. It was 125 USD for postage. It was well packed and only one piece missing which was minor the handle for charging the hull with powder and shot. I just put a bit in it. It had quite a bit of surface rust on the tooling and handle. I took it all apart last night and cleaned it up it was covered in grease. Pw recommends clean with just a small amount of there lube. So I got the grease cleaned off and went on to removing the rust. Quite happy with the results. I used hoppes  and a copper pot scrubber. It worked fast and easy reassembled the press and it is real smooth now. Now to build the platform on the loading bench to mount it the same as the other ones. If I can get it set up right the other one I have I will sell hope to pay for the freight on this one! Lol. When its up and mounted I will take a picture and post it.

WATERFOWL/UPLAND GAME / 10 guage.
February 14, 2016, 05:38:20 AM
Real excited I won the bid on a ponsness warren 375 in ten gauge magnum last night. I have two of them now one set up for 12 both three and two and three quarter length and another setup for both lengths as well. I find these presses easy to load shells on. When it gets here I can load some high speed steel rounds up for next hunting season. I got some alliant steel powder the other day and some longshot. So all is good in the reloading shot shell world for me. I can hardly wait for next season. There is a spring snow goose hunt here as well.
