FIREARMS & OPTICS / New Optics
October 12, 2015, 03:32:03 PM
Hi guys,

Was looking for a cheap scope for my Mauser in 303-25 and came across a Russian scope made by ZOMZ. Did a bit of research and they didn't seem too bad, as far as Russian made goods can be. I know some of you do not like anything made in Russia and that is understandable but it was going for $80 on eBay here in Oz. I contacted the lady and she said if I came and collected it the next day she'd give it to me for $60. I got in my twin cab asap.

Well it has never been mounted and it appears to have been made between 1988-1993. It was a gift from a Russian friend of her husband.

Here is the link to the ended auction for the one I purchased. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Rifle-Scope-Last-Day-Before-Going-Away-/111788107065?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=g%252F2Q8aHFAZFBT2ktUA9e%252Fw7KlqQ%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

There was a fund raiser in the US where I saw another one but that was ridiculously overpriced as it was for charity. Refer to link. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/201428886568?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

From the research I've done they go between US$80 to US$250.

I was most impressed at the quality of the optics. It is brighter than any of the scopes I own but I don't own any Kahles, S&B or top of the range Zeiss. It will will do the job on the ferals here in Oz as long as it hold zero (fingers crossed). Very bright at night which was a big surprise.

ZOMZ also makes binoculars under its own brand and the Tanta brand. Some of the UK bird watchers were pretty happy with the quality of the bins.

It has a metal tube so I guess like anything built in Russia it has the toughness and finesse of a tractor. Still I'm happy with the purchase.

Cheers

THE CAMPFIRE / Flag at half mast
August 27, 2015, 10:02:34 PM
Hi Guys,

I'm flying our flay at half mast right now and it is with a heavy heart that I share of my dear father Luis' passing. He died of a heart attack this morning and the pain in my heart is unbearable.

Please pray that this tragic event will bring the family closer together.

I loved him dearly and will miss him very much.

So if you don't hear from me anytime soon you now know.

Well the antis are at it again in Australia and it looks like we will be losing more firearms with lever action rifles and shotguns and pump action rifles to be re-categorized to a restricted class which will mean the average joes will not be able to own them. The excuse being used is the Lindt Cafe shootings but I don't understand what that has to do with criminals and terrorist that don't register their firearms. It will not make the country a safer place.

The biggest problem we have in this country is that there is no unity amongst firearm owners with too many different organisations representing shooters and the numbers spread thin. The other problem we have is the complacency of many shooters that stay silent on these issues and are happy to accept whatever comes their way. Then you others that already have a Category D licence for semi autos that don't really care because they are ok and have no interest in the greater good of all the shooting community.

I'm so over this cr@p that I'm seriously contemplating a move to New Zealand where I can own a semi if I want to. Not that I would or need one but at least I have the choice.

We will probably end up with only single shots being allowed so I may have invest in a Martini or Ruger No1.

Sorry for the rant. It's now over.

AUSTRALIAN OUTDOORS / Saturday's Scouting Trip
June 22, 2015, 08:45:31 PM
Well I finally got out for a wonder about two weeks ago to the regular patch in Labertouche State Forest I had been frequenting. I took out my son Jesse (7 years old) for the first time and he was amazingly quiet and listened and followed all instructions. He loved it and I was amazed at how well he did been out bush. He can't wait to get out there again. He can't carry a rifle till he's 12 years old according to our laws so he just accompanied his old man. I thoroughly enjoyed having him along, he is a wonderfully good natured fellow, a great companion and extremely fit and rugged little guy (unlike his old man ;)). looking forward to having more outings with him in the years to come.

Every time I have gone out to this particular spot there were fresh deer signs but the only fresh signs were wombat droppings which from a distance can be mistaken for deer droppings (only by those with poor sight like me) but their droppings are very green and of a cubic shape. There was no fresh deer tracks, rubs or droppings anywhere. So I have finally given up on this spot after having spotted deer in the past but have not had chance to take a shot. You guys not from Oz have to understand that state forests in Victoria are regularly frequented by hunters so there are slim pickings to be had.

Last Saturday I went to a new spot in Noojee State Forest. Again there is plenty of evidence of yahoos coming to either hunt or just shoot stuff up as they left all their shell casings both rifle and shotgun everywhere, along with their beer cans but there were fresh deer tracks and rubs so it looked promising. I left Jesse at home as this was my first scouting trip and I didn't know what kind of landscape awaited. Thanks goodness I did leave him at home as the track was very steep and muddy as anything. I looked like one of the dudes from KISS with 3 inch mud platforms hanging off the soles of my shoes, not easy to walk in. But once I got to the top of the ridge it was all worth the hike. Check it out.

I had a look around and did not see any immediate tracks at the top of the ridge and I found a tree stump that made a nice seat, placed my shooting sticks down and set up the rifle and commenced to glass for action.

Sorry about all the pics but I sat and enjoyed the scenery. Here's a few more.

This is to my left

To my right

This is straight ahead on the 4WD track I was sitting on the edge off on the stump.

The fog started to move in so I decided to have a look around the ridge to my right. Here are some pics of the fog moving in.

WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND? / Missing my dog
March 17, 2015, 02:17:19 PM
Hi Guys,

I know they are animals but my little Bonny died about a month ago and I'm still struggling with her loss. She was a little Sh!tzu x Maltese and was a little smoocher. She looked like a cross between an Ewok and a mini Wookie, very adorable little thing. Couldn't take her hunting as she was too precious and was scared of gun fire plus she was not on the allowable breeds for hunting here in Victoria.

Here she is with my 7 year old son Jesse.

I am buying a Border Terrier which is a good family pet but also a good little dog for hunting. I don't hunt ducks but I will use this dog as a scent dog for deer. He'll just be on the lead to help me find some deer. This won't happen till early next year. This will give me time to save the $1,500 I will need.

I know it may seem foolish to grieve over a dog but the are part of the family.

I buried her in our backyard and my 3 year old was telling me yesterday that she missed Bonny and that she was sleeping in the big hole in the yard. Very sweet.

Here is my daughter Lily, Bonny and myself.

Sorry for all the pics, I guess I'm trying to share my grief. Never really owned small dogs till I married my wife. I always had German Shepherds, Kelpies and Golden Cocker Spaniels (which my folks bred). But I learnt to appreciate them owning Bonny and our previous one Bounty.

Take care.

Cheers

I love the SMLE sporters. I know I need serious help. :eek:

I know many of you do not like the look of these rifles and the collectors amongst you would frown at the bubba'd milsurps.

But this fellow must think he is on a winner for what he is asking for his chopped up SMLE. Check it out. http://usedguns.com.au/Product.aspx?p=47223

If it was a 1918 to 1921 with some possibility to being brought back to its former glory it may be worth a bit more than AU$400 but a 1941, I don't think so.

Now Joe before you say anything, yes it's an expensive tomato plant stake. :greentongue:

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Bubbas are alive and well in Oz

Hi Guys,

Check out the evidence of bubbas being alive and well in Oz.

A Mauser FR-8 destroyed by a zealous bubba trying to Jeff Cooper a rifle that most probably already functioned well in it's original state.

Matthew 14 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

John the Baptist Beheaded
14 At that [a]time Herod the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus, 2 and said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him."

3 For when Herod had John arrested, he bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. 4 For John had been saying to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." 5 Although Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they regarded [c]John as a prophet.

6 But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced [d]before them and pleased Herod, 7 so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8 Having been prompted by her mother, she *said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist." 9 Although he was grieved, the king commanded it to be given because of his oaths, and because of [e]his dinner guests. 10 He sent and had John beheaded in the prison. 11 And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. 12 His disciples came and took away the body and buried [f]it; and they went and reported to Jesus.

Five Thousand Fed
13 Now when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the [g]people heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. 14 When He went [h]ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick.

15 When it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, "This place is desolate and the hour is already late; so send the crowds away, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves." 16 But Jesus said to them, "They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!" 17 They *said to Him, "We have here only five loaves and two fish." 18 And He said, "Bring them here to Me." 19 Ordering the [j]people to [k]sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food, and breaking the loaves He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds, 20 and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve full baskets. 21 There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children.

Jesus Walks on the Water
22 Immediately He [l]made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away. 23 After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone. 24 But the boat was already [m]a long distance from the land, [n]battered by the waves; for the wind was
 • contrary. 25 And in the [p]fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. 26 When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out [q]in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid."

28 Peter said to Him, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water." 29 And He said, "Come!" And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" 31 Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and *said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" 32 When they got into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, "You are certainly God's Son!"

34 When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place [r]recognized Him, they sent word into all that surrounding district and brought to Him all who were sick; 36 and they implored Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were cured.

Judges 17 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Micah's Idolatry
17 Now there was a man of the hill country of Ephraim whose name was Micah. 2 He said to his mother, "The eleven hundred pieces of silver which were taken from you, about which you uttered a curse [a]in my hearing, behold, the silver is with me; I took it." And his mother said, "Blessed be my son by the Lord." 3 He then returned the eleven hundred pieces of silver to his mother, and his mother said, "I wholly dedicate the silver from my hand to the Lord for my son to make a graven image and a molten image; now therefore, I will return them to you." 4 So when he returned the silver to his mother, his mother took two hundred pieces of silver and gave them to the silversmith who made [c]them into a graven image and a molten image, and [d]they were in the house of Micah. 5 And the man Micah had a [e]shrine and he made an ephod and [f]household idols and [g]consecrated one of his sons, that he might become his priest. 6 In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes.

7 Now there was a young man from Bethlehem in Judah, of the family of Judah, who was a Levite; and he was [h]staying there. 8 Then the man departed from the city, from Bethlehem in Judah, to stay wherever he might find a place; and as he made his journey, he came to the hill country of Ephraim to the house of Micah. 9 Micah said to him, "Where do you come from?" And he said to him, "I am a Levite from Bethlehem in Judah, and I am going to [j]stay wherever I may find a place." 10 Micah then said to him, "Dwell with me and be a father and a priest to me, and I will give you ten pieces of silver a year, a suit of clothes, and your maintenance." So the Levite went in. 11 The Levite agreed to live with the man, and the young man became to him like one of his sons. 12 So Micah [k]consecrated the Levite, and the young man became his priest and [l]lived in the house of Micah. 13 Then Micah said, "Now I know that the Lord will prosper me, seeing I have a Levite as priest."

Psalm 144 (NASB)

Prayer for Rescue and Prosperity.
A Psalm of David.

144 Blessed be the Lord, my rock,
Who trains my hands for war,
And my fingers for battle;
2 My lovingkindness and my fortress,
My stronghold and my deliverer,
My shield and He in whom I take refuge,
Who subdues [a]my people under me.
3 O Lord, what is man, that You take knowledge of him?
Or the son of man, that You think of him?
4 Man is like a mere breath;
His days are like a passing shadow.
5 Bow Your heavens, O Lord, and come down;
Touch the mountains, that they may smoke.
6 Flash forth lightning and scatter them;
Send out Your arrows and confuse them.
7 Stretch forth Your hand from on high;
Rescue me and deliver me out of great waters,
Out of the hand of aliens
8 Whose mouths speak deceit,
And whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
9 I will sing a new song to You, O God;
Upon a harp of ten strings I will sing praises to You,
10 Who gives salvation to kings,
Who rescues David His servant from the evil sword.
11 Rescue me and deliver me out of the hand of aliens,
Whose mouth speaks deceit
And whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
12 Let our sons in their youth be as grown-up plants,
And our daughters as corner pillars fashioned as for a palace;
13 Let our garners be full, furnishing every kind of produce,
And our flocks bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our [c]fields;
14 Let our cattle [d]bear
Without [e]mishap and without [f]loss,
Let there be no outcry in our streets!

Zephaniah 1 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Day of Judgment on Judah
1 The word of the Lord which came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah:

2 "I will completely remove all things
From the face of the [a]earth," declares the Lord.
3 "I will remove man and beast;
I will remove the birds of the sky
And the fish of the sea,
And the ruins along with the wicked;
And I will cut off man from the face of the [c]earth," declares the Lord.
4 "So I will stretch out My hand against Judah
And against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
And I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place,
And the names of the idolatrous priests along with the priests.
5 "And those who bow down on the housetops to the host of heaven,
And those who bow down and swear to the Lord and yet swear by [d]Milcom,
6 And those who have turned back from following the Lord,
And those who have not sought the Lord or inquired of Him."
7 [e]Be silent before the Lord [f]God!
For the day of the Lord is near,
For the Lord has prepared a sacrifice,
He has consecrated His guests.
8 "Then it will come about on the day of the Lord's sacrifice
That I will punish the princes, the king's sons
And all who clothe themselves with foreign garments.
9 "And I will punish on that day all who leap on the temple threshold,
Who fill the house of their [g]lord with violence and deceit.
10 "On that day," declares the Lord,
"There will be the sound of a cry from the Fish Gate,
A wail from the [h]Second Quarter,
And a loud crash from the hills.
11 "Wail, O inhabitants of the Mortar,
For all the [j]people of Canaan will be silenced;
All who weigh out silver will be cut off.
12 "It will come about at that time
That I will search Jerusalem with lamps,
And I will punish the men
Who are [k]stagnant in spirit,
Who say in their hearts,
'The Lord will not do good or evil!'
13 "Moreover, their wealth will become plunder
And their houses desolate;
Yes, they will build houses but not inhabit them,
And plant vineyards but not drink their wine."
14 Near is the great day of the Lord,
Near and coming very quickly;
Listen, the day of the Lord!
[l]In it the warrior cries out bitterly.
15 A day of wrath is that day,
A day of trouble and distress,
A day of destruction and desolation,
A day of darkness and gloom,
A day of clouds and thick darkness,
16 A day of trumpet and battle cry
Against the fortified cities
And the high corner towers.
17 I will bring distress on men
So that they will walk like the blind,
Because they have sinned against the Lord;
And their blood will be poured out like dust
And their flesh like dung.
18 Neither their silver nor their gold
Will be able to deliver them
On the day of the Lord's wrath;
And all the earth will be devoured
In the fire of His jealousy,
For He will make a complete end,
Indeed a terrifying one,
Of all the inhabitants of the earth.

2 Chronicles 3 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

The Temple Construction in Jerusalem

3 Then Solomon began to build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord had appeared to his father David, at the place that David had prepared on the threshing floor of [a]Ornan the Jebusite. 2 He began to build on the second day in the second month of the fourth year of his reign.

Dimensions and Materials of the Temple
3 Now these are the [c]foundations which Solomon laid for building the house of God. The length in [d]cubits, according to the old standard was sixty cubits, and the width twenty cubits. 4 The porch which was in front of the house was as long as the width of the house, twenty cubits, and the height 120; and inside he overlaid it with pure gold. 5 He overlaid the [e]main room with cypress wood and overlaid it with fine gold, and [f]ornamented it with palm trees and chains. 6 Further, he [g]adorned the house with precious stones; and the gold was gold from [h]Parvaim. 7 He also overlaid the house with gold—the beams, the thresholds and its walls and its doors; and he carved cherubim on the walls.

8 Now he made the room of the holy of holies: its length across the width of the house was twenty cubits, and its width was twenty cubits; and he overlaid it with fine gold, amounting to 600 talents. 9 The weight of the nails was fifty shekels of gold. He also overlaid the upper rooms with gold.

10 Then he made two [j]sculptured cherubim in the room of the holy of holies and overlaid them with gold. 11 The wingspan of the cherubim was twenty cubits; the wing of one, of five cubits, touched the wall of the house, and its other wing, of five cubits, touched the wing of the other cherub. 12 The wing of the other cherub, of five cubits, touched the wall of the house; and its other wing of five cubits was attached to the wing of the [k]first cherub. 13 The wings of these cherubim extended twenty cubits, and they stood on their feet [l]facing the main room. 14 He made the veil of violet, purple, crimson and fine linen, and he worked cherubim on it.

15 He also made two pillars for the front of the house, thirty-five cubits [m]high, and the capital on the top of each was five cubits. 16 He made chains in the inner sanctuary and placed them on the tops of the pillars; and he made one hundred pomegranates and placed them on the chains. 17 He erected the pillars in front of the temple, one on the right and the other on the left, and named the one on the right Jachin and the one on the left Boaz.
