THE CAMPFIRE / Re: Spring is here!!
April 24, 2008, 04:37:44 AM
We are going to be 80o today with thunderboomers coming in later this afternoon and continuing through the weekend.

Our temps are going to stay high.

Reminds me Grey.  I was in Ontario in September.  One day the sun was out and very warm.(HOT).  Woke up next morning and it was snowing.  By mid morning the ground was covered and no bear hunting that day.  Next day the sun was out again and warm.

Now I'm really corn fused.

Is rape seed and cornola a weed?

We use rye as a cover crop for our corn, baccar, tomato fields.  Works great to get a good yard going too.

We plant rye in the fall.  Protects the field until the next Spring.

Some farmers leave a field of rye to grow and let the field rest for a year.  Then plow it under for the next planting season.

What ya need in winter months is a "slop jar" end of your bed.
Then when the sun comes out in the morning make a mad dash to the outhouse and empty the "slop jar".  Rinse it out at the pump and "there ya are".

Not much winter during the day time here AZ.  Maybe 2 weeks of really cold, cold.  Most time the temps just drop to about 35-40 for the low.  Might be 2 days of below 20.

Since we come here there has been maybe? 11/2in snow total.

60 here there's a chill in the air til the sun gets out and the wind dies down.

I been there done that too many times hunting and fishing.

My grandma had a pump like yours and an old FireChief cook stove.  Outhouse in the back with the wood pile close by.

And a "slop jar" at each bed.

THE CAMPFIRE / Sometimes you feel like a nut!!
April 23, 2008, 12:31:50 PM
I like Cashews.

So today I'm fooling around looking for tree seeds.

And I run cross this article about Cashew trees.

Turns out Cashew Tree's are fruit trees.  Sorta like an Apple but much more tender and sweeter.  Picked off the tree only last for about 24 hours.  But a staple in India and the tropics.  Locals love the fruit of the Cashew Tree.

The fruit is called Cashew Apple.  "DUH"

The cashew nut grows at the end of the apple...at the tip end of the apple.   When the apple ripens and falls from the tree they harvest the tip, nut.  The cashew is in a hard shell and has to be opened much like a walnut.
(anyway I'm thinkin' like a walnut) The article just went on a long detailed explanation of how the nut was cracked.

I could order 5 large seeds, which looked amazingly like a big cashews.

What I found interesting was the Cashew Tree serves a double purpose...one of a Fruit to be eaten and well liked.  But not shipped out of the area where the Cashew is grown cause they don't have any way to preserve them for shipping.

(wonder why they don't make jellies or jams from the Cashew Apple?)

And the other the delicious taste of the Cashew nut.

I swear I am not making this up!!!:hat:

I thought I answered but it much have gone into cyberspace.

They are at Land Between the Lakes.  About 35miles from my county.  And NO there is no season.

If you search Land Between the Lakes you can get the low down on the Fallow deer and the American Bison.
And the Elk herd.

Great drive through the Trace.
Interesting place.  You can coon hunt when there is season.  Deer hunt with bow in season. Gun season on deer is by tag pull I think.

Never wanted to go gun hunting for deer in LBL.

I know AZ. Sounds great to me too!!

The house across the street with the one bedroom, one bath is a 2700sq ft house, two story.

I'm thinkin' Great Room downstairs, 2 bedrooms upstairs with the one bath. And an add a bath downstairs.

Only problem with the house across the street is I have a feeling it's been empty a long time and for sale a long time. Most likely have to move a bunch of snakes out before you could even consider walking inside. Maybe snakes, raccoons, possum, spiders, maybe even a gound hog or two.

I do like the price and where it's located VERY MUCH!!!

OH forgot there's an Johnny house out back the one I did post...LOL!!

I think that would count Grey!!

THE CAMPFIRE / Re: IT's SUMMER TIME IN TENNESSEE!!
April 23, 2008, 11:13:52 AM
I always did a Spring hunt and a Fall hunt in Ontario.   After the "flies" incident in Maine I think they did away with a Spring hunt a few years later.

We never went back to Maine to hunt in the Spring again.  But did one time in the Fall.

I preferred Canada.  And your right the wilderness in Canada is awsome!!
