I remember Sand Hill Cranes.  Never ate one.  I was more into Canadian Grouse or Spruce Hen..which ever.  Didn't matter to me they were both good eating.  They were like chickens running around every where you went.

As it turns out we did have what passes for a blizzard in March.  Blizzard around here means maybe 1-2inches of the white stuff.  But alas I was in Texas so missed it!!
And Dallas/Ft Worth had a blizzard causing major hwy problems but alas...we weren't there yet. Stopped to eat supper and missed all the action. ;)

I read not long ago.  TN is the only state in the Union the weather changes every 2 days.  Don't like it today...wait a couple days and it will be to your liking.

And the only state when it's 70o's there's likely a chill in the air.  Must be all the windy folks around in TN.

And we have toronados and earthquakes to contend with Grey.  Toronado came Friday night and destroyed our Fairgrounds and some homes along the river.  Just a couple broken arms but otherwise no injuries.

And there was a quake at 6:45 this morning.  Not much shaking and lasted only seconds.

A lot of our birds are here all year Grey.   There's even a hummingbird stays here all year.

We only have about 2 weeks to a month of cold weather.  Very little snow...maybe a skiff from time to time.

Yesterday it had been 78o, dropped down to 68o and there was a "chill" in the air.

Deer here to Bow and they haven't touched a thing.

Never had any luck with foul.  Something always seems to get to them no matter what I do to hide them.  If it's not a fox, coyote, hawk it's snakes.

The most luck I've had was raising Domineckers for fryers.  Raised them in a rabbit pen several feet off the ground.  Managed to get them to frying size.

I just read this is the year for the Pharaoh Locus.  And they are due now.

Most thing they do, I think, is hollar "Pharoah" all day and night long.  Sounds like a "space ship" is about to land...

They wake up here around 4am.  Makes me want to throw a shoe out the window sometimes.
But most of the time I'm thinkin' all is right with the world if the birds are singing their songs so early in the morning.

At least I can hear them.

We have " pie eyed"  every year drumming on an electrical transformer.  Must be some kind of "drum talk".  It sounds much like an African drum or Indian Drum sending out signals.

Me too with a wood house.  I would worry if woodpeckers are working on my house.

It's time to call ORKIN!!

One of the Queen's men took me to see.  So I wasn't alone.

And the bear didn't seem to mind our presence.

They were much too busy fishing to fool with us.

I was "still" hunting and stepped out into a field full of blueberries bushes and I'd say "20+" bear were straddling the berry bushes eating their fill.

I got a little nervous and spooked.   I made a quick recovery and vanished!!

Could it be "global warming"?

I was bear hunting in Canada in the Spring.  Ice was still on the lakes.  Thawed about the 2nd day into a 2 week hunt.  Killed some time by fishing (drag hooking) hog suckers laying on the bottom the lake.  And a few lake trout (which by the way learned later does not sit well with the Queen's men)

Anyhoo after the 2nd day the bear were lined up at their favorite fishing hole.  Didn't kill a bear eating his fill after hibernation.  Waited a few more days then went to bear hunting seriously.

But I have to tell ya bear lined up fishing was quite a sight.

Great pics Paul!!

Some of the funniest antics I have ever seen has been a moma bird teaching her young to fly.  They bob up and down trying to work up their nerve.  And moma is squawking every minute trying to get them air borne.

Seems like there is always one who hesitates.  Then after they fly a foot or so they are squeeking with joy.

Come to think of it sounds pretty much like the jungle sounds in movies.  Hadn't ever given the idea much thought.

I've heard them called "pie eyed" woodpeckers.
And they are about 1 1/2 ft tall or taller.

They are common around here too.  And they seem to work on dead or dying trees or branches.  They commonly nest in pine trees in our area.  Anyway I see them flying into and out of pine trees so I'm assuming they nest in the pines.

Never have seen a nest.

Maybe a site for African Game hunters would be more suited to your purposes wild.

I can't speak for anyone else but my longest trip for hunting included Canada on several occassions.  Went to Maine a few times.  None were guided trips and none were "game farms".

I have no plans to travel to Africa for hunting purposes.

I will however travel 30miles from home to hunt what ever happens to be in season on a regular basis.

Same here Sandhills.  Our big woodpecker looks like "Woody the Woodpecker"  Red head, stripped body and a very large bird.  And loud!! No doubt who is around when he is here.

Our hummngbirds are here and like "dive bomers" around our heads when we're outside.
We pretty much get the same hummers every year.  I've noticed a couple males looking a little different than our usual male.  Our usual male was here couple weeks ago.
And the girls are beginning to come to the feeders too.

We have a large groupings of birds of prey too.  Owls, eagles, hawks.
