FIREARMS & OPTICS / Re: .416 Ruger ?
January 21, 2009, 11:54:18 PM
I have been a fan of Ruger for a long time.  I've never owned one (M-77), but shot one that belonged to a friend and fell in love.  I have also had an interest in a really big bore in the .416 range, without going to the magnums (ptooey, ptooey).  I just don't need that much energy (or recoil).  Soooooo, this peaks my interest greatly.

Well, that is a cute little round.  Can't wait to see what the shooting results are.

A little late, but nice job.  There ought to be some nice steaks in there.  I missed most of the season.  Worked most of the first season and was laid up with the back through the doe season.  Well, next year will come.  I took the pistol when I was out.  Should have had some open sights.  Nearly got run over by a buck, but couldn't get a scope on him that quickly.

Without going back and re-reading this thread, I thought I recalled someone saying there were slight differences, move extractor notch, etc.  It reminds me that almost anything can be done.  It's just a matter of how much effort one is willing to put into it.  Still, this seems a worthwhile project, although it also seems an opportune time to try "something a little different", say a wildcat-303?

Well, truth to tell, if money were no object, I'l opt for something else, but my personal preferences don't include a Glock.  What I don't like about my Hi-Point are the same things I don't like about the Glock in the blocky, bulky look.  Now, I have never shot a Glock and if I did, I could change my mind, but appearance is as important to me (in the case of money is no object) as function.  The old Govt Colt still appeals to me more than anything else.

I see there are some prety opinions, here.  I think Lvrlover hit the nail on the head.  If you're going to depend on it when the chips are down, you better have shot it enough to be familiar with it, and that means you will know if it is reliable, or not.  If you spent $50, or $1000 for it, you will know.  I think we all agree that we expect more (quality, looks, reliability, etc) if we pay more.  But "expect" doesn't equal "get".  Shoot it and make sure it will do what you expect.  So far, I've had no trouble with mine, but once I've put enough rounds through it, who knows?

That's what I had in mind, given a black powder "equivalent".

FIREARMS & OPTICS / Re: recoil control

Well, I'm short on time, so I couldn't read all of this thread.  My little story goes back to a friend of mine who had a P-H in 270.  (Now, don't anybody kill me, I know a P-H is a favored firearm, but this is HIS story.)  He couldn't stand it because the 270 Win had too much recoil.  He sold it.  Later he bought a Ruger M-77 in 270 Win.  He was afraid to shoot it.  When he did, he thought the load was a dud because there was not enough recoil.  It was all about fit and shape (straight stock, etc).  I have seen shot guns with "try" stocks.  They look like a bench rifle with adjustable everything.  One shoots it with someone adjusting the stock until it fits.  Then a custom stock of those dimensions is built and voilla!!!  A shotgun that fits, and it shoots great and has less recoil (felt).  I find, personally, that rifles I used to think had bad recoil only had moderate recoil WHEN I WORE HEARING PROTECTION.  Don't know if this helps, but it's what I have found out for myself.

I'm not exactly ready for a name, but I wonder how much black powder would you shoot from a 30cc cartridge?

Well, that's what happens when I get away for a couple of days.  You guys start a hot thread and I miss most of it.  I have a couple of those Hi-Points.  A C9 and a 45.  I have had some jams with both, but I shoot a lot of reloads with my own lead cast bullets, and some of them should not have been used.  Even with my reloads, when I used jacketed bullets I have never had a jam.  Locally, the gun shops can't keep them in stock.  I bought mine several years ago and got them for about $240 for both.  They're big, ugly brutes, but they do what they were designed to do and I can't complain.  For the price, I say try it out, put it through the wringer, and if it's unreliable, don't count on it.  I have trouble hitting anything with them, but that's a function of not shooting them enough, lately.  I used to hear about people couldn't hit anything with the govt 45, but that was, again, a matter of practice.  I got so I could hit with it pretty good, but only after I put a bunch of rounds through one.  They say the issue Berettta is so much accurate.  It doesn't take AS MUCH practice to be able to shoot it, but in an expert's hands, the 45 is just as good.

So, I'll take more care with my reloads, put a LOT more of them through them (both), and still count on my new (to me) Ruger Balckhawk 357 for really accurate shooting.

I'm bettin a rolling block #2 would handle that, too.

It sounds to me like one would need to limit the energies to approximate the 22 RF, standard velocity to really maintain safety.  That's a real shame, 'cause this sounded like a great "rook" rifle.  I've been interested in a great CF plinking rifle, myself.  I've got an old Springfield 22 single shot (bolt) action that needs rebarreling.  I have even thought about changing out the firing pin for a CF and rebarreling in .32 ACP.  Of course, another option is to rebarrel in .17 HM2.  Opps, better pay my gas bill first.:o

It sounds as if you have had some fun with this one.

WHITETAIL / Re: 44 magnum marlin

I'll add my vote of confidence within the range limitations.  I shot the Ruger semi auto in 44 mag, loved it.  Didn't get a chance to use it for deer, but would in a heartbeat.  I liked loading my own with a 265 gr bullet.  Still not much recoil in that gun.

What I have always thought of as my ultimate survival firearm is a combination 22 RF/12ga.  Savage made the Mod 24 in this combination although I am sure other firearms are available.  The 12 guage would handle all of the examples of critters to dispatch and the 22 RF would be available for lighter needs.  One would need to take a wide variety of 12 ga ammunition, from birdshot, to buckshot, to slugs.......   I'm used to carrying different ammo for the 12 ga.  I have a friend who hunts pheasants with a cylinder bore, 18.5' barrel 12 ga.  He loads his shells to provide a 15 ft, 15 yd and 40 yd pattern with different wads, etc.  I feel the most versatile firearm in existence is the 12 ga.  Nothing "does it all", but the 12 ga comes as close as anything.
