HUNTING WITH DOGS / Re: De-snaking clinic?
August 15, 2009, 09:54:47 AM
Quote from: jesusgecko;95566Seeing as we have no snakes over here (much to my annoyance - me being a reptile freak),  I don't know whether I even need to ask this question.....but.....

What IS a de-snaking clinic?

Only guessing as I live in Wisconsin and don't think about Ratters too much.
Dog have a tendancy to try to sniff everything, they have no fear of snakes
so the chance of them getting bitten is I suppose pretty good.

I'm not sure if its any one thing or not. Scent control is effective, Stand height is effective, wind management is effective, control over movement in your stand is effective...I have been busted because I screwed up one or all of these over the years.

Your biggest enemy in the woods IMO are adult Does! They let you know when they have detected you for sure.
I think that Bucks as someone else noted, generally just move away methodically and quietly.

Keep in mind that deer use scent and vision in equal measures! Better put. They are equally adept at busting you with either.

Another buzzword is patterning Deer...I think the opposite is also at play here. Adult Bucks or Does will pattern you as well.

WHITETAIL / Re: Hunting is getting...

I don't care if I ever kill another Deer in my life, that is the truth.
I do care if I am unable to ever go hunting again though.

Some of the best days I have ever had afield was taking a snooze in a warm sun and a soft patch of ground.

Having said that...Don't give up on the mid-day hours-especially when there are other hunters about....I have shot many deer beyond the prime time periods.

If you know this woods well. Locate where they sleep, and where they eat...Talk to bowhunters..they are the most knowlegable deerhunters you will find IMO...And being one, I can tell you we love to tell others how to hunt the right way...Forget the bait if you can...Use scent control and hunt out likely ambush areas between bedding and feeding areas...And be patient.

Excellent Buck..You should feel very proud of that magnificent animal.

Plus you learned a valuable lesson and still got the trophy...Unlike some of us who were destined to learn the hard way!

I have not heard of anyone saying this about the Hmong community...We have a large one here in Wausau...The biggest in the State.

This was about an individual murderer..Not about the Hmong people.

It is true they have a checkered past regarding game law violations...but this is about murder!

I think the articles are a gross exageration of the tension between the cultures...Fueled by who knows what!

Most minorities have thin skin...and are probably just acting up...they should just shut up and look at it like most whites do...A murder plain and simple...Not a hate crime!
Although if the shoe was on the other foot...I wonder how many times we would have heard that one!!

Let just put this animal away...and learn from it.

WHITETAIL / Re: Size of food plot on 20 acres?

The roughed Grouse society has some nice info on food plots...As I am sure Whitetails does...But i concur that 1-2 acres will be you best bet.

WHITETAIL / Re: Wind - n - Whitetails

I think the deer are affected more by the accompanying fronts just prior to the 20-40 mph winds, moon phases that affect feeding patterns and nocturnal activities...Etc.
I agree with the others though that wind by itself is not a deterrent to deer moving...Its usually more of a hinderance to the hunter...depending on tree stand or ground blind...I really don't care to sit in a tree when it is blowing real hard...But I do...Because time is valuable...Tree time is invaluable.

Once we get them back to the cabin...we rinse them as best we can,,No running water!!
We use those blue 7 gallon jugs.
We then hang them in the shade...Even if its freezing..the sun is a powerful thing.
We admire for a day or two..then we skin them...cut them up or quarter depending on what we want...Throw them in the freezer..Yes we have electricity.

My first thought when I heard the details of the shootings...Was the same thing...I thought, I've been lost before...The last thing I would do is climb up in someone's tree stand and wait till dark!!!

The Perps whole story is frought with  truths, half truths and and outright lies....It sickens me to hear some drag up the race card.

I think this will become a contentious trial when all is said and done.

As far as his weapon of choice!....I have seen them in gun shops...But have never actually seen someone tote one around in the deer woods.

We don't get many murders up here..The ones we do get normally involve a family member getting drunk and doing something stupid.
One we did have though 2 years ago...Not far from here..Involved a hunter..who took two rounds in the back while on his stand on his own property...His gun was taken as well....The only lead was that a pickup with Asians was seen in the area!!!

This is certainly not to indict a whole race of people..I know better...But the police are looking into a connection with this perp!

Well this cheeshead Packer/Badger fan is hitting tha sheets...goodnight and God bless.

WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND? / My take, for what its worth...
November 30, 2004, 02:32:59 PM
This is an interesting topic for me as my cabin is about 40 miles from where this happened.

This has cast a huge pall over many of us up here in Northern Wisconsin...I can't get it out of my mind....Trying to get my arms around this tragedy has been very difficult for me...And I didn't know any of the victims personally.

It happened on a Sunday...I didn't make it into my stand until about 11:00 AM due to staying up late at my camp playing cards and drinking Leinenkugels....But thats OK, That why the good lord gave us a 9 day season I figure.

As I sat in my stand, feeling much better now thank you....I was warm as could be, despite the temp around 28ยบ...We had taken a Sauna prior to going out...It helps!!

Around 3:30PM I heard a twig snap behind me(of course)...I could tell it was a Deer...not one of those pesky grouse that show up when you are only armed with a rifle, knife, and a little jerky.

I carefully moved into position...There he was. A nice shooter...A ten pointer...Long story short...I got the trophy...The biggest of my life....When we registered it later that evening...I find out about this massacre just an hour drive away.

The rest of the evening was grim, thoughtful and sad...No jubilation for every Deer hunters dream, bagging that trophy Buck that has eluded him for the previous 40 seasons.
all I could think of was the last hunt for 6 of my brothers and sisters who had the same dream as me...It haunts me still....Can someone offer any thoughts to help a fellow brother of the brush deal with this in a logical way?

THE WELCOME WAGON! / New guy from Wisconsin
November 30, 2004, 02:08:15 PM
Hello...ran across this forum while doing what I do when I'm not hunting...Reading about hunting.....I hope to be able to contribute to the many interesting threads I've already noticed.

My main interests are Whitetail hunting Bow and gun....And Grouse hunting.

I do most of my hunting in the Chequamegon Nat forest in North Central Wisconsin.
This is about 40 miles from the recent tragedy with 6 brothers and sisters being slaughtered...Doing what we take for granted every trip afield...Big Eddy
