We have just found fresh black bear sign where I plan to call coyotes and bobcats. Will the bear come to my calls and what should I do if he comes. The season is closed for them right now and we can't shoot them unless it is a life threatning situation. I don't wanna shoot him now but what do I do,  if he comes to me , to make him back off from me ?

He may come to your calls, if you are calling in his home area.
Most bears will run much like a deer does when they know a human is in the area. One thing it will attack over is it's cubs if they are around & it feels threatened.

Some bears don't really mind human presence, & they may have to be run off, if they get too close. Loud noises, & raising your arms over your head to make yourself look bigger...he might quit the area.

I'd have a shotgun w/ slugs as back-up though...:)
Remind yourself often to SEE not just "look".

If they are anything like our blackbears, they will run the minute they notice you, and they can run fast!!!! just make some noise and they should go away, even if they have cubs. God Bless.

When I call in a bear, I usually make a big noise.

A 7mm mag makes quite a boom, after all, and I don't usually call in bear country except during bear season.

Not sure how scaring them away works.

Every bear I've seen was afraid of me soon as it found out what I was. Only twice have I been approached by bear in the wild. Once was when I inadvertently walked between a sow and her cubs. The other one was on a bait when I walked in without a gun. He charged but was distracted when I threw a five gallon bucket of stale donuts at him. I have no idea why he charged. Normally black bears will run soon as they figure out what you are. I wouldn't worry about something like that even in bear infested woods  ......Paul H

Clueless

Black bear are driven by two things Antler.  Fear and food.
Like Paul says I have seen many bear in the woods and mountains and they have made a very quick exit from me.

Just don't have any open food laying around.  And try to stay away from a mom with cubs.

Talked to a guy the other day who was turkey hunting.  And a bear attacked him.  He was in an area full of rock formations and knooks and crannies.  Thinks he must have stumbled on a den and a Moma bear.

He shot the bear.  The bear ran off and he followed the blood trail but never found the bear.

The one thing I would do is make sure you have a weapon on you that would Kill a bear if attacked.

I really appreciate all the info from everyone.  I've never seen a bear in the wild and this is my first experience in knowing there is one in the woods I hunt.  I hear stories of them just running from you and other stories of them attacking. I like the sound of not being worried they are there, guess I've got one up on him in knowing he's there. I will feel a little nevous going into the woods now but hopefully I'll settle after awhile and learn to share the woods with him. It would be an awesome experience to get to see one AT A SAFE DISTANCE !!!  Thanks again ya'll,  for all the good info.

You'll be fine Antler.  Just be watchful and use your senses...sight, sound and smell.

Bear do have a definate smell about them...

I suspect when you go to using calls the bear will scatter.   And they will smell you.

They are moving Smokey Mountain bear into our area.  These bear are used to the human scent and can be very dangerous.  If they smell food you're liable to find them on your door step.

Remember they have their cubs this time of the year.  Last years cubs and this year cubs.

I lived in the Smokey Mountain Range most my life Antler.  I'm a little used to knowing bear could be around anywhere.

I'm not sure how many they are relocating to our area but I suspect a lot of the relocation has already taken place.  They seem to tell ya something like a major "relocation" after the fact.

Unless the bear is within a 100 yards or so it should not come in if you are calling for coyotes. Calling bears takes a whole different style of calling (long/loud) and with yotes you are usually using a lower volume and shorter sequence.
As for one coming in, just stand and wave your arms, then get a head start to the rig over your partner.

Now if you want to call in a bear, send me a pm or I can post in a new thread.
