I was just wondering what is the avarage yrd. settings for the PINS on a Compound Bow. I have the 1st one set for 10 yrds. I have the 2nd one set for 25 yrds. The 3rd one set for 35yrds, and the 4th one for 45 yrds. I was just wondering your opinion on this. I can easily hit The Block about 4 inches away from a bullseye at 45 yrds. I know thats how far it is because I actually measured where I am shooting.

Well, sounds like your quite the archer. However, as you a good bowhunter? An archer can hit a target from a long ways away. A good (ethical) bowhunter will continue to limit themselves to short yardage to insure a quick and clean kill. Yes, a bow will shoot an arrow a long ways....but the deer or other game may not be there when it arrives.

I practice every year out to 50 yards.....and it sure makes those 20 yard shots seem like a piece of cake! I used to always use just two pins....although many of my friends swear by only using one so you don't get confused when in a hurry. Anyway, I'd have one at 15 and another at 25. I always limited myself to 25 yards....if the deer was at 20, I just bracketed it with the two pins.

Even with a modern (fast) bow.....until you've shot several deer and are thoroughly familiar with their reactions, your limits and your strength....I'd recommend using just two pins and placing them at 15 and 25.

Of course there are always those who don't care much about the bowhunting image and brag about "sticking" deer (and then loseing them). Or "flinging" arrows at deer....... both of which are real negatives for bowhunting. Ethics play a bigger role in bowhunting than in most other activities. Please consider carefully your actions and how it will play out in the long run.

This is a very good question and it deserves to be brought up regularly and discussed. Good luck.

I just started about a week ago shooting. Im happy with how im shooting.

Yea about the PINS. I was planning to get rid of one or two. I just dont need 4. I can judge the shot of how to shoot it

12 gauge

Personaly Luke, i would never exceed 30 yards when deer hunting, even to a good bow hunter 30 yards is quite a good shot!

I've been bowhunting for 3 years now, i've only got 2 pins, one for 15 and the other for 25. 10 of course is below the 15, 20 is in between (split the difference) and 30 is a little above the 25.

I never take shots above 30, unless i am certain i have a clean shot and i am confident i can steady my aim and take the shot to make a clean kill. Practicing at 30+ yards is fine, i even take a few practice shots up to 45 yards! But when it comes to hunting i make sure i only have 2 sights and they are set at fair distances. If you have four, then you will get too confused, when a deer comes up all that adrenaline will cause you to think 90 to nothing and when you look at 4 pins, it is like seeing 4 deer but only one of them is real...(in other words, unless you can get your mind together and remember your yardages well with the settings of the 4 pins, you will have a 1/4 chance of picking the right pin)

So i only use 2 that way there's not much confusion. And i limit my shots up to 30 when hunting, i can shoot really good, i can hit the circle on the block target at 30 yards, but that's when practicing, when hunting, i've even missed 15 yard deer because my mind went 90 to nothing and i accidently used the wrong pin. (one for 10, another for 20, and another for 30; what i did was i thought my first pin was 15, so i put it right on the deer and the arrow went right underneath it! )

I am pretty sure you are good at shooting a bow, that's the way it sounds, but once you get that deer in your sights, adrenaline and excitement sets in and it makes it a lot harder to concentrate! Your arms and legs are shaking and your heart is racing, and if you can't control yourself you will be shaking like a leaf on a tree and your movements will mess up the shot!

Good luck this hunting season Luke! I am rooting for you! :)

God bless
