A strange marlin rifle

A shooting mate was given a Marlin Model 56 action.
 
These rifles are apparently rare in OZ, ringing around to some gun dealers had them scratching their heads.
 
As it has no stock or barrel, I simply want to know if they are any good and if the effort to restore it is going to be worth it or should my mate not bother.
 
Any information you have would be appreciated. Thanks.

A good read. Looks like a great little lever rifle, something different from the run of the mill tube magazine and exposed hammer variety.
 
Wouldn't mind one in .30 carbine now that our semi autos are banned!
