22hornet requested some pics of this.
This trip was done by 4 vehicles from NSW, 3 from Sydney and mine from the Southern Tablelands.
Dave has a lowered '65 Type 3 Squareback, Dan a '62 11 Window Bus, Dutchy and Nat a ground-scrapingly low '67 Panel and myself and my buddy Carlyle took my lowered '67 Panel.
The guys from Sydney left the outskirts at 4am and arrived at the McDonalds near my place for brekkie around 6 o'clock.
We then fueled up and cruised on.
Dutchy's Panel is only about 3" off the road in places and he managed to kick up a lot of sparks and even lost a skid plate.
This was bolted on again when we stopped here at Holbrook to fuel up again.
The Type 3 has a VERY small tank.....

We also grabbed some morning tea at the Bakery Cafe:

We then headed south toward the Victorian border where the roads are a LOT better.
Same size population, much smaller land area, more tax money for roads, slightly better state govt.
Here I am at the helm:

A fuel and meal stop outside Melbourne in the afternoon:

A couple of VWs we saw when we arrived:

This Single Cab is an American import which was original a drug runner for a gang importing from Mexico. Then a custom shop in the USA got it, restoed it and dropped the body on the chassis to give it that ultra low look.

Our campsite at the caravan park. Dinner was beer and excellent pizza from a local non-franchise joint. Can't ask for more than good food and good company.

The facilities at the park were great as was the camp site. But at some ungodly hour of the morning we were awoken by a member of camp staff who said a naked man had been roaming the park and had been escorted off the property. Then she demanded we make sure he wasn't one of our party! It was really rude and totally bizarre. Not surprising Carlyle, Dutchy and Nat didn't get much sleep after that.

And the NSW gang just before Carlyle and myself left for home at 2pm on Sunday:

In the end we got home around 11:30pm including 2 fuel stops and a 1/2 break for dinner.
Not bad considering we had to navigate our way across and out of Melbourne.
That took AGES!!
The total trip was about 1400kms....just under 900 miles.
A blast of weekend.
The Melbourne guys were great and it revealed to me just how much NSW is missing a proper VW scene.
Here they tend to be insular and snobby, particularly the "vintage nazis" as the purists are called.
It was a great weekend, as good as I anticipated and more.
Cheers & God Bless

Looks like you had a blast for sure kombi. That black Carmen Ghia is sure a looker. Got to go for a ride in one years ago. The feller driving it knew how to make it go and I was concerned for my knickers a few times. Seems to me he had done a good bit of work to the engine, because it had no problems spinning the tires. He would get a good bit of rubber when he hit second and a good chirp when he hit third. I was a'sceered to look at the speedo, but we went from Miles City MT to Forsyth MT (50 odd miles) in under 30 minutes on the interstate.

I'll have to make sure and go to the Mustang Round-up in Steamboat Springs CO (40 miles from here) this summer. Five city blocks of nothing but vintage Mustangs from all over the U.S. and Canada. Yes, mine will get to go, but I won't enter it in the contests.

You'd fit in in my neighborhood kombi. Especially by my house. Except I deal in old Fords instead of VW's :D.  I do have an old Volvo and a GTI setting out back but I don't lay claim to either of them :o

Sounds like you had a good road trip kombi. 1400km's on the road with the boys.  Do you have UHF to keep in contact?

Isn't Melbourne traffic a nightmare to work out. The only place that you have to turn right from the left hand lane. Go figure.

Some nice VW's there too. I'm not a fan of beetles, the world worst looking car, but karmanns have a certain class about them don't they?  And kombi utes too.

At a place where I used to work at one of the apprentices had a VW twin cab ute that he did up in the work shop on weekends and afterwork. He lined the tray with teak and polished it up well. Looked a million dollars.
